The link between being high up in the bowling averages and a bowler’s strike rate has again been proved in the 2008 JCT600 Bradford League season.

Chris Brice (Woodlands), who topped the Division One bowling averages, also had the best strike rate with a wicket every 20.71 balls.

Another six members of the top ten in the Division One bowling averages also figured among those with the leading strike rates.

They were Richard McCarthy (second in the averages), Peter Swanepoel (fourth), Grant Soames (fifth), Imran Arif (sixth), Chris Schofield (eighth) and Kez Ahmed (tenth).

The only interlopers in the strike rate top ten were Esholt’s Gulsheraz Ahmed (19th in the bowling averages) and Hanging Heaton’s Nick Summerscales (18th).

Similarly, in Division Two eight of the ten are the same – Richard Robinson (first in the bowling averages), Kashif Naveed (second), Ashley Metcalfe (third), Mohammad Sharafat (fourth), Mohammad Fayyaz (fifth), Nawaz Sardar (seventh), Lorenzo Inghram (eighth) and Chris Henry (tenth).

Bankfoot duo Andrew Deegan (13th) and Nigel Hanson (11th) are the exceptions in being outside the top ten bowlers but inside those with the top ten strike rate.

Idle’s Fayyaz led the way with a wicket every 22.49 balls.

When it comes to economy, the pattern is less clear, but McCarthy, Mushtaq Ahmed and Swanepoel also figure highly in a list that is topped by Woodlands’ Safraz Ahmed (2.15 runs per over).

However, Nasir Jamal, Ben Lister, Zubair Najeeb and Tuseif Arshad are economical without being great strike bowlers.

Sharafat and Naveed are in the top four of economy and averages in Division Two but Greg Colehan, Amar Mahmood Khan, Robert Thornton, Richard Nichols and Imran Amin were economical without being able to break into the top ten of the bowling averages.

Idle’s Tahir Mahmood was the most economical in Division Two at just 2.12 runs per over.
