Former Yorkshire Coun-ty Cricket Club president Sir Lawrence By-ford officially opened Pudsey St Lawrence’s refurbished clubhouse.

Sir Lawrence was in jovial mood, saying: “I opened its predecessor 18 years ago and if you invite me back in another 18 years’ time I will be 104 and will have to order a taxi!”

His love of St Lawrence has only been deepened by boyhood hero Sir Leonard Hutton having played there, and he donated some Hutton memorabilia for display. Club president Keith Moss, wearing two hats as he is also president and chairman of the JCT600 Bradford League, thanked the army of volunteers who had made the new area possible.

Among the guests were Lady Byford, former England captain Ray-mond Illingworth, Rob-in Smith of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Julian Vallance of the MCC, Pudsey MP Stuart Andrew and representatives of the JCT600 Brad-ford League.
