BOTTOM team Scholes pulled off the shock result of the season as they defeated Cleckheaton by four wickets to register a first win in the All Rounder Cricket Bradford Premier League.

On a Monday full of surprises, East Bierley also beat second-placed Hanging Heaton by 57 runs to climb out of the relegation positions.

Overseas player Rizwan Ahmed made an unbeaten 81 as Premier Division new boys Scholes chased down Cleckheaton's 226 with two balls to spare.

Third-placed Cleckheaton were made to pay a heavy price for not batting out their overs as the extra over that Scholes received proved crucial to the outcome.

Ahmed struck four sixes and seven fours as he built on the earlier work of Danny Cross (37) and Yasser Ali (30) to secure a much-needed win for his side.

Nobody will have been more pleased with the result than Scholes captain James Stansfield, who is a former Cleckheaton player. He played a big part in his team's success by taking 4-49 to spark a collapse in Cleckheaton's middle order.

They looked to be powering their way to a big total as skipper John Wood made a typically aggressive 68 and Chris Holliday scored 43 until Scholes hit back.

From 115-1, the home side plunged to 156-7 and only a defiant 70 not out from Muhammad Zaman enabled them to claim maximum batting points.

Scholes remain bottom but the win will do their confidence the world of good – and no doubt they will be hoping to follow the example of fellow strugglers East Bierley, who completed a Bank Holiday double with their triumph over Hanging Heaton.

Matthew Lumb played a key role with bat and ball as East Bierley recovered from a terrible start.

Lumb arrived at the wicket at 76-6 and played with good sense to make an unbeaten 41, being well supported by Tom Ormondroyd (29) in a crucial stand of 68 for the seventh wicket which helped Bierley towards their 155-9.

Dan Busfield (3-32) and Mohammad Rameez (3-30) were the pick of the Hanging Heaton bowlers.

The normally powerful Hanging Heaton batting had no answer to Lumb (4-37) and new-ball partner Tuseif Arshad (2-21) as they plunged to 40-6.

Bierley were in no mood to let such a strong position slip and Awais Ijaz (3-7) mopped up the tail as the Batley side were dismissed for 98.

Pudsey Congs dropped into the bottom two after losing a rousing derby to Pudsey St Lawrence by 18 runs.

The highlight of the match was a sparkling 128 not out by St Lawrence opener Adam Waite, who hit two sixes and 15 fours and was backed up by Chris Marsden (43) in a challenging 247-3.

Congs made a bold attempt to go for the runs, with skipper Gareth Phillips (48), Callum Geldart (46) and Josh Wheatley (35) keeping them in the hunt, and their challenge was only extinguished in the closing overs when wickets were sacrificed in the pursuit of quick runs.

Young Charlie Parker, playing in his first derby, picked up 3-31 in the closing stages as his Saints side bounced back from Saturday's defeat at Lightcliffe to go 18 points clear at the top.

In-form Farsley share second place with Cleckheaton after defeating lowly Bradford & Bingley by 26 runs in a match in which their South African captain Arthur Price scored his maiden Bradford Premier League century.

He struck 13 fours in his 109 and anchored the Farsley innings, Dan Hodgson and Greg Pickles both chipping in with 30 as the Red Lane side made 218-8.

Matthew Walker (3-56) and Yassir Abbas (3-59) were the most successful Bradford & Bingley bowlers.

Despite useful contributions from Hamza Iqbal (51), David Clow (41no) and Scott Etherington (37), B&B were dismissed for 192, with Mustafa Rafique taking 4-29 and Chris Henry 3-58.

Suleman Khan's second century of the season could not save Lightcliffe from a 22-run defeat at New Farnley. The overseas player scored 82 of his 120 in boundaries with seven sixes and ten fours.

Crucially he lacked support, with only tailender Jonathan Whiteoak (31) looking likely to build on his fine innings in the face of a match-winning spell from Muhammad Bilal (6-68) as they fell short of New Farnley's 235-9.

Big-hitting Nick Walker led the way for Farnley with a rousing knock of 95, which contained four sixes and 11 fours, reviving his side with help from Lee Goddard (34) after Rob Burton (3-33) had posed early problems.

Woodlands returned to winning ways and made it a blank holiday for Morley with a comfortable eight-wicket win.

Morley, who started the weekend in second spot, were again hampered by the absence of their injured overseas player Kashif Naveed.

Last season's Division Two champions quickly found themselves in deep trouble at 37-5 and it was due to the determined efforts of Luke Heinemann (57) and former Woodlands player Nathan Bromby (34) that they managed to post 170.

Chris Brice was the pick of the bowlers with 4-26 and Woodlands were never in danger after openers Sam Frankland (76) and skipper Tim Jackson (37) put on 110.
