PUDSEY Congs have set up an enticing Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup semi-final at Woodlands on Sunday, July 19.

The Britannia Road club had their moments of worry when Jonathan Boynton (118) and teenager Jordan Bloom (47) were adding 146 for host Gomersal's fourth wicket.

But once they were parted in the 38th over, the Oxford Road club, who were chasing 258, could not sustain their challenge and were dismissed for 220 in a battle of JCT600 Bradford League clubs.

Glenn Roberts, used as an opening bat as he was in the second-round victory at Hanging Heaton, added 45 for Congs' second wicket with Kez Ahmed after the early dismissal of Nick Lindley but the real impetus came from the usual sources of Callum Geldart and skipper Adam Patel.

Geldart hit six fours and three sixes in a breezy 61 off 55 deliveries, Patel backing him up in a partnership of 90 for the fourth wicket by striking 28 off 36 balls, an innings which contained three fours and a six.

Mubtada Akhtar (23) and James Pearson (24) maintained the momentum, but James Russell (1-31), Joel Pollard (1-45) and Adam Greenwood (2-36) can be pleased with their ten-over analyses as Congs totalled 257-9.

Skipper Graham Hilton, Greenwood and Ben Hyde soon fell in the reply as Gomersal stuttered to 12-3 but Boynton, whose runs came off just 138 balls and contained 13 fours and three sixes, and Bloom, who adopted the lesser role but still hit seven fours, put the Second Division side back in the hunt.

However, they lacked support, only No 7 Joshua Fell (20) also making it to double figures as the innings subsided from 158-3 to 220 all out, left-arm spinner Roberts taking 4-50 and off-spinner Kez Ahmed 2-29 to continue his decent cup figures.

Mustafa Rafique (2-27) nipped out Hilton and Hyde early doors, while Pearson (2-43) took wickets at the start and finish of the innings.

The other semi-final, to be played on the same date, is between Townville, of the Central Yorkshire League, and the Huddersfield League's Hoylandswaine.

The latter were faced with Kirkburton's imposing 307, of which Javaid Ahmad made 88, Iqbal Khan 55, Jonathan Butterfield 40 and Asif Hussain 34. Hoylandswaine replied with 312-2, Sarjinder Pal P Singh hitting an unbeaten 100, Gharib Nawaz scoring 87 and Ryan Robinson 71 not out.

In the SOLLY SPORTS CROWTHER CUP, Congs will be at home to Ossett in their semi-final on Sunday, July 26, but Woodlands must replay their match against Scholes (Huddersfield League).

Woodlands had made 194-9 off their 50 overs when the heavens opened, Jack Crater scoring 74 and featuring in a good partnership with Joe Bowman (26).

No new date has yet been arranged for this semi-final due to Scholes' involvement in the Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield.
