More Millennium misery for Bulls

Bulls 26 Leeds Rhinos 40

The scoreline may have been closer than Headingley and there was none of the cruel injustice of the previous Millennium Magic, yet somehow this Bulls defeat will be the hardest to stomach.

While Bradford were destroyed by a team on fire in March and a pair of bungling officials last May, on Saturday night they were simply undone by their own obvious failings.

The fact it came against a Leeds side bereft of seven regulars, including talismanic players like Gareth Ellis and Jamie Jones-Buchanan, just made it worse.

The Super League champions were there for the taking in Cardiff, not only at the start but at the midway point too, when Steve McNamara's side led 10-6.

But they capitulated spectacularly to throw away a glorious chance to narrow the gap on the leaders and give themselves a real shot in the arm in their own quest for success.

As soon as Eric Anselme gleefully finished off a sweeping move from deep with just 46 seconds on the clock after the restart, Leeds looked like they would motor on and inflict yet another demoralising defeat on their fiercest rivals.

Bradford opened up as easily as all the bars waiting for the masses of supporters to descend on the Welsh capital this weekend. It was very un-Bulls-like as Leeds struck from their own half time after time.

Soon after, Danny McGuire set Simon Worrall charging through for Keith Senior to finish off and then Tame Tupou - caught ball-watching when Scott Donald raced down his touchline for Anselme's score - was found wanting again.

The big Kiwi winger was supposed to come on as a prop against Leeds, with his 18-stone frame utilised to give the Bulls forwards some much-needed ballast while missing Joe Vagana and Chris Feather.

After all, there's only so much the ever-willing Andy Lynch and Sam Burgess can do on their own.

But when James Evans pulled up early with a dead leg, Tupou was deployed in his usual spot. How he must have wished he had have been mixing it with the forwards instead.

He came in-field to flap at Brent Webb's long pass that put Donald over and was caught out a third time when Super League's top-scorer got on his outside again straight from the kick-off.

The outstanding Webb was on hand as ever to take the spoils that time and Kevin Sinfield's conversion made it 28-10 with just 14 minutes of the second period gone. Game over.

Webb is out of contract at the end of the season and apparently open to offers. Bradford aren't short of full backs, with Dave Halley again impressing and Michael Platt unable to get in the 17, but this Kiwi would be a real asset with his flair and skill.

It was up front where the Bulls were short on Saturday though, with second-row Jamie Langley forced into action as an emergency prop when Tupou was deployed elsewhere.

McNamara had no props to rotate off the bench and the engine room suffered.

Then came the calamities out wide and there was no recovery.

Semi Tadulala and Shontayne Hape did respond with tries when the Bulls held onto the ball long enough to get to the Leeds end and that saw them claw back to 28-20.

But Paul Sykes dropped the restart, which summed up their night, and Leeds were off the hook.

Although Bradford manfully defended that set, they immediately undid the hard work when David Solomona tried to get Tadulala clear. His telegraphed pass was plucked out of the air by Ryan Hall, the Leeds winger racing in untouched from 35 metres.

Terry Newton was penalised for being offside from the kick-off and the Bulls' frustrations were palpable.

They had already seen one restart harshly pulled up for not going ten metres and they knew they were fighting a losing battle.

But there had been far too many handling errors earlier on, with even the usually reliable Halley and Burgess coming unstuck. Completing only half of your sets is never the bedrock for forging a win against a side of Leeds' potency but that is what McNamara's side mustered in another big let-down.

He also blamed a woeful kicking game and they badly missed Ben Jeffries' expertise in that department as well as the injured stand-off's pace.

Last year, a furious McNamara refused to leave the press room, staging a sit-in until he got answers about the referees' howlers that led to Leeds snatching victory in the last second.

This time he was furious again but blaming no one but themselves after this disaster.

"It doesn't get much more disappointing than this and it's not good enough," admitted the coach.

"We started dreadfully slowly and our kicking game was really poor but then the second half was even worse.

"We only held onto the ball five times. At half-time we spoke about gifting them ball from poor kicks and then we decided not to kick it at all - just give it to them.

"We made it even easier for Leeds. I'm disappointed with everyone and I include us all in that."

Despite plenty of Leeds pressure, Bulls were up at the break through Tadulala's opening try, marking his 100th career game in British rugby league with a typically powerful finish.

Seventeen-year-old Kallum Watkins responded in his first Super League start but two Deacon penalties gave them the edge and they deserved it, having earlier defended their line for three consecutive sets.

However, the second half was a different matter entirely and Bradford - after now painfully conceding 40 points twice against Leeds this season - were left sifting through the wreckage of another one that got away.

Not to worry though, we'll still finish top, but even if we dont we can be happy with fourth or below this year.

Well, for those of you that said lets get tupou out there and see what he can do....he's shown what he can do! get him on the first plane back to aus, let them have him. i said weeks ago that i wouldn't have him as a bench warmer. he cost us 3 tries in short succession all by being out of possition. at least macca took him off in the end. i wouldn't say it was dismal, there were a few bright spells, our defence was very good, except for the tries let in by the above mentioned. harris is too slow as we all know, didn't do anything wrong but just didn't do a great deal.
as for lj's comments, you'll get used to his sarcasm albion! we all take no notice.

What's the best we can hope for in our next four League outings, seriously?

Two wins? One win?

Catalans are going to be very tough but we've got the beating of them, I dont rate Cas(or Westerman), so I think we've got them.

Leeds - Thrashed us twice already with their academy side, Saints at Knowlsley - Cant see a win there.

2 out of 4 good enough?

I think not. Story of our season!

Poor.

Fair play, but he had to be given another chance, I wouldn't give him another one now and I agree that he must be shipped off.

As for my comments, are you taking notice of my predictions before the start of the campaign?

no he didn't have to be given another chance, he couldn't break the like against the boys team against wigan last week.
i'm not a glory supporter lj, as i've said numerous times, i've supported the bulls for over 35 years, through thick and thin, successful and baran times and i'll continue till the day i die. if we don't win anything then it's not the end of the world. i'm just waiting for a bit of stability to come to the team over the next few years, once we have rid of the over payed donkeys. i wont call for the head of the coach as he is trying to get that stability in the wake of the s.... left by the previous management.
leeds have that stability that we once had and that saints have had, theirs is now starting to break up and they are not the force that they were. it's all cyclical and our time WILL come again, you just need to keep the faith and give them your support.

Of course he had to be given another chance, he was dropped for a poor showing for 5 games after Wakefield, where as Platt had a stinker 4 games on the bouunce and without injury would have retained his jersey, lets have a bit of right at least.

I've not accused you of supporting the glory and I wouldn't, I am neither a glory supporter and despite my relativley young age have supported Northern/Bulls for 16 years none stop, through or pre SL garbage, to our glory days and will continue through this poor patch we are going through.

It isn't the end of the world if we dont win anything, but it is my right to critise and praise as I see fit, and I will critise when when and to whom it is relevant and will not offer false praise or pretend things are good when I know full well they are not.

You can wait for the stability and overpaid and donkey players to leave CJ, but who in the right mind would want to join a club in decline, which there is no doubt, that we are.

We wont get that big game player that we need next year even with our free money, I can assure you, quite simply because Bulls are not an attractive enough club to that sort of player anymore.

As for Leeds and Saints having stability, it was very evident to me that Leeds have it in abundance and Saints are still very much alive and kicking and they will be Leeds biggest threat this year.

As for me continuing support..of course, but having faith...which in this current situation would be blind..I think not.

I prefer the realistic and simple approach to things, and that is admitting what is currently happening at Bulls.

That is, a once great club is being watered down by the minute with recruitment of substandard individuals (Playing/Coaching/Ad

I was so disgusted at our last home game at what I saw I am in 2 minds in reporting it to the police. For years, many supporters have made their unhappyness of the stewarding at Valley Parade full aware to the club and to the Telegraph & Argus, and as a club they have always defended the heavy handed actions of the nazi style bully tactics they employ. A couple of home games ago I was accused of being a criminal because I was carrying a can of cola and treated as such, all I wanted was a drink, my first one of the day, if there was reasonably priced drinks in the ground I would buy within, I bet the same steward would not stop a woman with lets say a metal flask about 2 or 3 times bigger which would be a more serious weapon. I bought a scarf from the shop as it was cold, so in a great mood, smiling walking towards the turnstyles, and then how am I treated within 5 minutes, I am searched before being let into the ground, anyone would have thought I had knicked the thing, nice customer service by the way if the club are reading this and want some feedback. I was so incensed at that point I have decided to disassociate myself from Bradford City and especially the ground as soon as my season ticket ran out and I will never ever set a foot in Valley Parade ever again till these little Hitlers are removed and replaced, and I am not the only one either. I was so close to taking action against this slander as I was so offended to be called a criminal just because "he did not know me". Constantly they bully little kids in and around me, to make themselves feel omnipotent, yet they never ever confront adults or anyone near their own size.

The incident which has actually made me contact Bradford City, to which I may I have had no reply at all, so I am really incences to make a national newspaper investigate the goings on at Valley Parade and shame the club or maybe, just maybe, I will make an official complaint to the police against the club as their lack of a response and constant defending of the stewards is so obvious they approve of such behaviour. So what I saw was damned right too far in my own opinion, I do not care what City class supporters as, young, old, male, female, black or white, at the end of the day, we are CUSTOMERS, and all we want after a week at work, or in some cases, school, is to get out and enjoy ourselves, yet the stewards are doing all they can to spoil people's experience at Valley Parade. Towards the end of the match, it was so obvious that a lot of people, mainly kids, would run onto the pitch in their masses, so what did the stewards do, just stand there leaving gaps knowing they would be be futile in trying, YET the area supervisor in front of the kop, the one that wears the blue jacket, middle aged with dark short hair took it upon himself to assault little kids running on the pitch, I saw him deliberately target small children by kicking hard at their ankles, some he missed, but he lashed out about half a dozen times, one small boy aged about 5 falling to his knees. If I hear one complaint to the police, I will definitely contact them as a witness to back them up as this was blatant deliberate physical assault on minors, it would have been interesting to see if he actually tried it with an adult. I do not want to see it in any form on adults in society, let alone an adult to young children. I still am in 2 minds to report it to the police and the person sat next to me also witnessed it. I have seen similar before at Valley Parade, but contact has not been made and personally, I have had enough of the treatment I receive and I constantly see. I would love to hear any thoughts on this as the club are not interested one little bit, in the past not listened to many fans, or in the present, be it City or the Bulls supporters comments several seasons ago when they spent 2 years at Valley Parade. I just have never had this or witnessed this at any other ground, be it in none league, international, football or Rugby League or Union.

This is one MORE supporter never stepping foot into Colditz in Bradford. I am taking my money elsewhere, I just need to decide where, but one thing is for certain, it certainly will not be Valley Parade, Elland Rd or Galpharm.

I wonder if I will get a reply from the club before I do make either the police or a national newspaper aware of the goings on which the club are fully aware of and are not prepared to do anything.

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
