Hull KR 20 Bulls 18
The Bulls' three-match winning run came grinding to a halt following a disappointing showing at Craven Park.
Bradford missed the chance to go second when they lost to a spirited Hull KR side for the first time in Super League.
Steve McNamara's team were bolstered by the return of three influential stars in Glenn Morrison, David Solomona and Terry Newton but the trio were unable to deny their determined hosts and they badly missed skipper Paul Deacon's organisational skills.
Bradford showed plenty of effort and character in miserable conditions but didn't possess enough finishing touches to unlock a Paul Cooke-inspired Rovers.
Solomona burrowed over in the 79th minute to make it close but the hooter went seconds later.
They were never ahead after going behind inside the opening two minutes and were always second best against opponents who showed some tremendous fighting spirit.
Bulls winger Semi Tadulala was caught napping when Ben Fisher dinked through a little grubber at the start. The big Fijian dithered and didn't see Peter Fox flying up and he dived in for an all-too easy touchdown.
Cooke booted from the touchline but Tadulala soon made up for his error.
It was Fox who conversely turned from hero to villain, the winger inexplicably spilling Iestyn Harris's re-start under no pressure whatsoever.
Bradford accepted the gift and soon after the resultant scrum Tadulala lapped up a long Ben Jeffries pass to beat the cover to the corner, the home defence having rushed up too quickly to create the chance.
Harris - standing in for Deacon, who has undergone knee surgery - repeated Cooke's skill by converting from wide out to leave it six apiece.
There were few further attacking ventures for the Bulls though in a bitty first half.
They were hammered in the penalty count by Richard Silverwood - stand-in skipper Morrison getting a talking-to after his side had offended six times inside the opening half-hour.
Most of those were for offside, one of which was kicked by Cooke as he put his side ahead again in the 16th minute.
The stand-off should have been converting his side's second try moments earlier when his delicate midfield grubber found Tadulala dozing again, expertly dissecting the winger and Dave Halley.
Ben Cockayne won the race to the ball but coughed up over the line.
However, on the back of another offside decision, the hosts extended their lead through man of the match Clint Newton on 23 minutes.
The Aussie second-row hit an inside Cooke pass and powered through as Jamie Langley slipped close to the line.
Getting their footing proved a problem for Bradford as they slipped and slided their way along, struggling to make ground in the greasy conditions.
When they did get in good positions, individual mistakes hindered their progression, whether it be spilled ball or forward passes at the ruck, and how they missed the influence of Deacon, who has forged a slick partnership with Jeffries in recent weeks.
It continued after the restart, with Newton firing a second forward pass to Solomona ten metres from the Rovers line and then seeing his side concede a penalty for offside on the last tackle.
After winning a penalty in perfect striking distance, Bradford self-destructed again, with Paul Sykes spilling Morrison's pass on the first tackle and the Great Britain centre did it once more as they tried to run on the last.
McNamara's side enjoyed far more territory as Rovers - who had worked hard throughout to build their interval lead - inevitably went through a quiet spell.
But they couldn't make anything of it, with visitors struggling for cohesion near the line.
It came as no surprise when Rovers scored with their first real attack of the second half.
Halley did brilliantly to somehow hold James Webster up when the wily Rovers scrum-half darted through off Ben Galea's clever pass.
But the full back's stunning effort proved worthless as from the next play another Cooke kick found Bradford wanting and Cockayne this time did the business.
Cooke added the extras and, even when they were reduced to 12 men after Clint Newton charged Jeffries late following a kick, Rovers looked determined to hold on for an historic win.
They weathered some more pressure until Newton - sporting a bleached-blond barnet after his return from suspension - finally broke them, his cute delivery putting Sykes charging over for the former Harlequin man's seventh of the campaign.
Harris's conversion brought it back to 20-12 and the stand-off thought he'd narrowed the gap further when latching onto Sykes' pass after a rare flowing move.
However, Silverwood awarded a penalty - there were 28 by the end - after Sykes was deemed to have passed off the ground following the outstanding Jake Webster's last-ditch tackle.
Solomona did bundle over at the death, Harris adding his third kick, but it was too late.

As regards Macca, If it's as straight forward as you suggest (and it is ) Why does he feel it necessary to move Jeff's from the position in which he has played so well i.e. why make 2 changes when you can get away with one. The players are certainly to blame but the coach made bad decisions too.
theres not that much difference between 6 n 7 wow 7 puts it in the scrum they can alternate between first and second receiver. how can you blame Macca for this they all know how to play rugby.

I put this loss firmly at the feet of Macca.
I wasn't at the game ( go Shaun! ) but I'll bet the reason we lost is simple, Deacon wasn't playing. He's pivotal to us, organizing us round the field and shaping our play. It's clear the refs are starting to spoil too many games and the RL need to look at it.

Every team this year are losing games that they should have won, Hull KR aren't a easy team to play against, they have probably signed the best players over the off season. Also I believe that the ref's when playing at Craven Park give some decision for the crowd. How can we go from being the best discipled team in the league, to give so many penalties away yesterday. I believe the blame is with the players on the pitch not the coach. So instead of **** about McNamara get behind the players, for gods sake we are 2 points off 2nd.
