Joel Monaghan scored a hat-trick for much-fancied Warrington as the Bulls crashed out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup at the fifth-round stage this afternoon despite a brave performance.

Bolstered by the inclusion of fit-again scrum-half Luke Gale, Bradford took the game to their hosts and Adrian Purtell saw a try claim turned down by video referee Steve Ganson in the ninth minute.

Yet three minutes later the Australian centre was celebrating after touching down for an opportunist score which Gale converted to put Mick Potter's men 6-0 up.

Warrington gradually moved through the gears and Monaghan went over in the right corner in the 23rd minute after a suspiciously forward-looking pass from Lee Briers.

As the interval approached, the Wolves struck twice in deadly fashion, first Brett Hodgson weaving his way through the Bulls' defence before a bad mistake from Bryn Hargreaves allowed Chris Riley to race clear from halfway.

Four minutes after the break, Monaghan touched down a teasing grubber kick from Hodgson and it got even worse five minutes later when former Bulls youngster Ryan Atkins powered over from 40 metres.

Bradford refused to lie down and conjured the try of the game when Keith Lulia finished off a brilliant handling sequence, leaving the scores at 26-10 in Warrington's favour.

Briers then had a try disallowed by the video referee and Warrington lost prop Chris Hill the sin-bin for interference with 15 minutes remaining and despite a late converted try for Olivier Elima, the Bulls conceded a sixth try in the dying embers.

Monaghan completed his treble in the right corner and Hodgson kicked his fourth goal.

The penalty count was on our side, the Wolves were down to 12 men for 10 minutes and for a long period of the game we had the momentum - we really shouldn't have been beaten. Saying that there were a lot of encouraging signs, discipline was good and, when he is fully fit, Luke Gale will definitely be the 'go to' player. In closing, haven't we got some great young players?

Great performance by the Bulls but lack of composure at crucial times proved to be our downfall. Gale needed the game and, hopefully, will push us forward from here. Diskin, in my opinion, looks superfluous to requirements and Heath should be our number one hooker. Hood cut a sad figure in the stands and I still await his resignation. Survival of the club is paramount. A very poor crowd at Warrington, today, so not much from the gate receipts. No disgrace but other factors are more pressing. It is very important that we win at least four out of the next five league games to stay in the Super League mix as it is a relatively easy stretch. So, it is all eyes on Peter Hood. WHEN will you resign?

How can u people say hood as dun his best for the club. The man is a liar and a cheat. His knowledge of rugby wud fit on a postage stamp. Caisley is the future, its ok you lot saying caisley is this and caisley is that. U didnt say it wen we were succesful. He made 1 error in signing iestyn harris. Dont people deserve a 2nd chance. Wen caisley takes over the reigns there is gonna be significant investment put into the club and in time we wil once again be succesful. On another note, fantastic performance from the lads again, shame purtells try wasnt given n we didnt give riley that silly try before half time cos i think we wud of been much closer to beating em. Roll on london next week and another win to keep the points ticking over. Get ur money on batley t beat london tmoro, guna b a mud bath n freezing cold. Southern softies will hate it. COYB

Some losses are good. We can focus on the league now and at least get in the playoffs. Things are wimproving slowly (as things do when good people stick together.

Some more good signs of improvement. At least we are now competing and not rolling over. Purtell had another strong game, its a shame ainscough wasnt switched on for the neat offload. Gale looked very good too. Never been a fan of K.Pryce but I have to say he has looked ok in the last few games. TBC really is a feckwit lol

The defence was good again as it has been for most of the season (not counting Catalans game) We were much better in attack as well, the Lulia try was probably the best try of the game. We need to keep Purtill and Lulia in the centres. We need 2 quality finishers on the wings.

I only said he has done his best, I never said he had done a good job, which I am not in a position to say one way or the other, as I am not privy to what has gone on behind closed doors. It was good to have Gale back but we still seemed short of ideas in the 20m zone. Hopefully as he settles in to the side this will improve.


When Kear is fit again, I would stick with Ainscough and drop Pryce. He (Pryce) has problems with defence, and drifts in and out of games. I hope Bateman does not cop a further ban after being put on report but I'm not holding my breath. COYB!

the jury is still out on Pryce but he should be persevered with. Signs of improvement even though he seems to lack energy, unlike Ainscough. Combine the two and we'd have an excellent player. Two of the best tackles made in the last two matches were made by Pryce, one against Huddersfield and one yesterday on Hodgson. Also, what about the high ball which he took like a basketball player and beat Joel Monaghan in the air. That takes some doing. But, I agree that Kear should be ahead of either Pryce of Ainscough who missed a perfectly good pass yesterday with the line open.

If anything really stands out for me as a Bulls supporter, it was a sterling effort defensively, for some of the game! With the best worked try of the game, by the Bulls.
The worst was the left wing being the highest scoring wing for the opposition(ahem!) and the appaling amount of pedantic stop starts by the Official, whilst missing many blatant forward passes.

Apart from that... a good game, that was lost by us, and not totally won by them, if that makes any sense!

That statement probably makes me an ideal candidate for this site??
