Jamie Foster column: Spell at Hull reignited my career

I enjoyed it massively there after heading out from St Helens in search of regular first-team rugby.

Peter Gentle had spoken to Royce Simmons, who had apparently given a good account of me, and I went to meet Shaun McRae at the Trafford Centre.

He asked me if I was ready to go and I said ‘yes, 100 per cent’.

I began training the next day and Hull put me up in a nice house in a place called Willerby.

My grandad came over with me, I made my debut against Hull KR in a derby victory and it came thick and fast thereafter.

The fans took to me straight away and apparently a lot of shirts with my name on the back were getting sold in the club shop.

It was unbelievable really and I’ve always had a good reception from Hull fans I’ve encountered since then.

They have got a massive fanbase and that loan move helped to reignite my career.

Liam Sutcliffe and Greg Burke have joined us on loan this week and they have fitted in really well in training.

They are good players, Franny has given them a chance and they seem keen to take it.

When we had the points taken off us last week, we said that tonight’s game at Hull could be the match that wipes out the deduction.

That would send out a strong message to the rest of Super League, so the more Bulls fans who make the trip the better.

Losing Nick Scruton was a blow but he’s a top bloke and he was very upset to leave.

On the flip side, James Donaldson is in remarkable form.

He’s a great tackler, as some would-be burglar discovered last weekend.

They picked on the wrong man in Donno because he can run all day!

In all seriousness, he’s been head and shoulders above everyone else as the best trainer in our team.

He never takes any shortcuts and he’s not the biggest lad in his position.

But he’s a quality player and would definitely be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
