Mick Potter waves goodbye to Bradford Bulls

Mick Potter admits the tumultuous last five months have taken their toll Mick Potter admits the tumultuous last five months have taken their toll

Bulls coach Mick Potter has revealed he is leaving the club and returning home to Australia.

Potter, who joined the club on a two-year deal from St Helens, has won praise for the way he galvanised his team under adversity after the Bulls entered administration and for agreeing to work on a voluntary basis after the entire coaching staff was made redundant.

Potter said: “I was always going to return to Australia and I feel that now is the right time for me to go and I have recommended Francis Cummins as my successor.

“He has worked with me throughout my time at the club and in my opinion will become a very good first-team coach.

“I have enjoyed my time at the Bulls and the supporters and people at the club are second to none.

“I feel too that, despite circumstances beyond our control, the team, through the rugby league we played, showed a lot of character in the midst of terrible adversity.

“(New owners) Omar Khan and Gerry Sutcliffe have come in and rescued the club and were keen for me to stay for a longer tenure and I made it clear to them that my decision has nothing to do with their purchase of the club. It has been the things that have happened over the previous five months that have caused my decision.

“I will be watching Bradford Bulls with a lot of interest from Australia and it goes without saying that I wish them every success in the future.”

Khan and Sutcliffe issued a joint statement.

It read: “We are sorry Mick has chosen to leave because we wanted him to stay longer with us after the tremendous job he has done in difficult circumstances. “He leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club and we wish him well in the future.

“We hope to be able to announce a new coach early next week.”

Sad to hear this, he's been a great head coach and I hoped he'd be staying but clearly Mick had made his mind up. Best of luck to him and thanks for digging in despite everything that was happening.

This may not be popular but I think Cummins is still a bit young, we had an untried coach after Nobby and it was a disaster. I say bring Nobby in, as a kind of director of rugby figure, to work with Cummins for a year or two.

I wish Mick & Megan all the best in going back to Oz, I'm sure he will find a good position somewhere in the NRL. I thank them both for the sacrifices they made along with a lot of the Odsal Staff in seeing that the Club did not go under and gave the Fans the hope that another Investor would be found!

I just hope that the hard work that Mick and the rest of the coaching staff is undone by dragging out this will they/ won't they be in Super League next season.

Good luck to you Mick. You are a true gentleman with the way you helped the bulls these last 4 months and you won't be forgotten.

The progress made under Mick Potter is there for all to see. Unfortunately much of this has gone unnoticed by outsiders due to the situation. Defensively we have still had problems and it seems like a very high percentage of our handling errors have been punished. The coach cannot do anything about that. Good look to him and sincere thanks for seeing the season out and giving us hope almost to the end. Easily the best season since Noble left although I think that Noble being in the background throughout this fiasco could be one of the reasons behind this decision,
Thanks Mick, enjoy whatever you do.

Very sad day for me losing Potter. I wonder if Franny is ready though. I would like to see someone like Powell at Fev given a chance again in SL. But, If Franny is given the chance then good luck to him but I would then go and get a tough assistant to work with him. Pitty Glen Morrison isn't available as assistant coach.

Potter deserves all our thanks, he should have no probs walking into a good job back home as he has conducted himself excellently during his spell here... Why all the doubts and negatives about Franny? he hasn't even got the job yet and why can't people see he was part of the coaching set up that saw the team play so well this season so deserves some of the credit. If he is selected he should be given respect and a chance to show what he can do before being doubted in this way.

The handling of this situation by the RFL has driven many of the reactions. Im unsure why they request a full business plan proof of credentials yet this detailed information doesnt provide enough comfort to determine which league the team will play in. I think Potters descision to go is linked to these continued delays. He had 17 players off contract and knows that they will all be negotating to leave the club "Why wouldnt they" thus leaving him with a scratch team when the RFL eventually decide on the clubs league position fate. I feel for the new owner he must feel like hes bought a lemon.

I think Potter has made it clear a he says it's whats happened over the last 5 months that made up his mind. He wouldn't be leaving because of the previous board as they have gone, it can ony really be because of the way the RFL have handled things, also a new coach to be announced so soon points to Franny getting the job so get behind him an give him chance.

You may be right about Cummins Solomon. However, remember that Nobby was untried too when he took over at Odsal. It is difficult from the outside to have a real sense of somebody's potential and instincts for the role, so we just have to trust the judgement of those who are on the inside of the game. I recall Leeds were disappointed to lose Cummins to us at the time, so they spotted his potential and if Mick says he is the man to do it then I wouldn't argue with that.

Come off it, Nobby took over at Bulls as an "untried coach" Elliott had been his mentor and Potter was Franny's mentor.
The greatest of all coaces were 'untried' at some point in their career. The chances of Nobby returning to the club are zero after he was accused by so many of jumping on the bandwagon when he offered his help and the club simply can't afford another top coach.

Mr Cummins is in prime position but, as some have said, untried in SL. However, SL status is not guaranteed so debating that is moot. SL or the championship, I would like to see Nobby back at Odsal be it as first-team coach, assistant coach or director of rugby, whichever is the best for club and person. Regardless is the choice of Mr Khan, we must get behind all involved at the club, in fund-raising and in support. The RFL are continuing to achieve their aims of seeing the Bulls stripped bare and unable to compete in SL, making their already preformed plan of dumping us into the Championship that much easier.

If they haven't already done so, I would imagine a lot of the out of contract players will prob be looking elsewhere, and those contracted also. The players will feel the loss of Potter badly, the bond these guys have had since this mess began has been there for all to see. There was a real "one for all, and all for one" feel about the place, and now the top man has had his fill and gone, and rightly so too. All the best to Potter and thanks for everything you have done! Players will follow him out of Odsal now.
I agree with Murphy's law that there is the sense that we will be in the Championship nxt season. Reckon there has possibly been a hint.
The RFL have dragged the last couple of months out to the nth degreem we have been unable to sign or re-sign players, leaving us in the position of the realistic prospect of having a squad not suitable or sustainable in SL and without the proper financial means to build one capable of competing. OK do not have the money, they have said this.
Cummins ideal man for the job regardless of us being in SL or not!

If the speculations are correct and we will be playing in the championship next year, then I will be interested to see what the RFL's stance will be when the likes of Cas, Salford and hull KR all enter administration! If Wakefield are still in super league then why the hell can't we. We hav had our punishments for administration; penalties, loss of players etc so why does it have to go further? So if we do get relegated then I expect to see every team that enters administration join us. The RFL will have set a precedent and will have to stick to it! So it will be very interested when all these other clubs start to struggle and we are left with a super league consisting of Leeds, saints, Warrington and Wigan.... That's going to be good for the sport!!!!

A year is much better than most hoped for or expected, right up to half an hour ago.it does give time to develop and for others to get a decent bid together, it also gives time for other clubs to go into administration and see how they cope with it! A good season and a well run club, which now needs to change its approach and have more input from the fantastic fan base, and we'll be there for many years to come. Still a great shame about Mick but we must get behind whoever is put in charge. (Please not Macnamara!) Great news! Bulls in SL for 2013. Better late than never but would we have still had Mr Potter if this had been announced earlier? What was the rationale behind the RFL's prevarification and procrastination? Anyhow, let's get those we want signed up, toute de suite.

Sutcliffe says coach to be announced on Monday so there's not a lot of searching to do. If they did try to persuade MP to stay then it appears that new man is probably Cummins.............
or Noble?

The other 3 clubs were not in a position to take the super league birth yet but have been told to get their house in order in the next 12 months as they may have to replace more than 1 troubled club.

1 year probation means nothing. If we stay out of administration or don’t breach the quota rules then how on earth can they kick us out when they didn’t now? Same with the next round of licences. No more misdemeanours and we will walk into a new three year licence. We did it 1 year ago while we were on the brink of bankruptcy. Rugby league is unfortunately broke and running on the fumes of profit so we will be fine as long as Mr Khan runs a tight ship. How long will it be though before people start coming on here with those comments we always get about when are we going to sign half of the Ausie test side. Forget that from now on. We will cut our cloth accordingly which will mean building the youth policy and picking up quality lesser known players both from here and down under. Chequebook signings have gone possibly for ever. It’s up to us now to support the youth set up. Everyone should join Bull builder and be proud of bringing the young lads through rather than wanting to sign expensive has-beens. A few years of hard work ahead now!

What a bloody fool you are. Pretend, person who can't spell, sorry pretends he can't spell. Me a loser, we leak points, will go bust again. No coach, appoint one on Monday, try reading articles. Fans will pay to go to Bulls. We have the players in situ. That means there already. Now the only reason I do not go to games is due to I'll health, not that that bothers you. Me a troll think not. Now go forth and multiply. So that's me giving you two fingers or one on which you can spin, moron.

Sorry to see Mick Potter leave, he and his wife and the rest of those who have been working for nothing! He and they, have done a great job under aweful conditions. Bradfords loss in Oz's gain good luck in whatever you both end up doing down under!

Not sure if others have seen it yet, but just read the SL website and they have given us a 12mth place in Superleague so at long last we can at least we can sure there will be rugby at Odsal next year. Whatever the side looks like I'll be there, lets face it I used to go when there were only a few thousand and we never seemed to win anything, I doubt it will ever get as bad as it was then and the one thing that we can say is that we are truely loyal to the players and club through thick (ex directors?) and thin (silver wear collections). Long live the bulls!

AND....

The Bulls website is on its way back! hip hip hooray...living miles away (as good as the T&A website is) its hard to get all the gossip, facts etc the website used to provide quickly. So please hurry up Mr/Mrs Webmaster/mistress.

All just conspiracy theories made up by bitter people? I personally don't believe anything other than some folk trying to start a smear campaign against noble because they feared their jobs were in jeopardy as noble is proven, he can bring back the glory days to odsal, noble can steer bulls back to the bull mania era, just look at his cv, it speaks volumes!
Well said and that old has been was only three years older than that young now has been.

Yes well done Mick.

You have worked without pay as Brian offered in the crisis.
And once back from holiday and realising he was upsetting an old friend by trying to help CC save the Bulls he very publically in interview with Ross withdrew.

Only for Mick to serve as his parting short such bitterness.

Mick has not worked such miracles with players on as much as they were.

In fact 2011 was dire was it not.

I think most working forward will be offered little.

because as Omar says he cannot do it without everyones help.

He does not even have to find 100k of his Bulls purchase money till 2015.

He has so far had to stump £150k.

And yes there is a £400k 5pc loan offer from good old Bradford Council.
who gave the Bulls £5 million of taxpayer money just 10 years ago squandered.

So expect frugality.
Omar is not Roman.
Roman is not Omar

Bradford is not Mayfair and the Bulls brand is not Chelsea.

Lets hope the great work of Bullbuilder continues and more John Batemans are found
