Bradford Bulls: Points loss has just spurred us on, says Cummins ahead of tonight's crunch clash with Hull

Francis Cummins has admitted the six-point penalty for entering administration has merely made the Bulls more determined to seal a play-off berth.

Victory against Hull FC tonight, coupled with defeat for Hull KR and Wakefield tomorrow, would seal a first appearance in the play-offs since 2008 ahead of next weekend’s trip to Catalan Dragons.

The likelihood, however, is that the race for the final play-off place will go down to the wire at Catalan Dragons a week today but Mick Potter’s men know that two wins in their final two games will put them home and dry.

That would be an incredible achievement for a club who have been in the midst of a financial crisis for much of the campaign and were docked six points for entering administration.

Assistant coach Cummins, who has been working without pay along with the rest of the coaching staff since being made redundant in early July, said: “We’ve paid the price for other people’s mistakes because we don’t feel as a group that the points deduction was anything to do with what we’ve done.

"It has certainly spurred the players on, there’s no doubt about that, and it is evident in the results we have achieved and how well they are working for each other.

“We know we lost the six points and we just want to work hard to get those back. The focus is on that – and it has to be.”

It is worth noting that the Bulls have won six of their last eight Super League outings heading into their final two games of the regular campaign.

Victory over the Black and Whites this evening would mark a sixth straight home win, but Cummins is wary of the threat posed by Peter Gentle’s side after they were stuffed in their last match at Widnes.

“Hull are a bit up and down,” said Cummins.

“They go from having a great result against Catalan to getting hammered at Widnes.

“The Vikings are playing well now but they too are up and down.

“They have had a few players missing but we are expecting a few back this week.

“They are a bit like we were at the start of the year, not knowing what we would get week to week.

“We know we have to start well and play well and if we do then I am confident we can win the game but it is easier said than done.”

Tonight’s televised game promises to be an emotional affair as the Bulls run out at Odsal for the last time this year. It also looks certain to be several players’ last game for the club on home soil.

“I think the emotions would be there in any case,” reasoned Cummins.

“We have played that many ‘last games at Odsal’ over the past few months it’s getting ridiculous!

“But it’s something we are not focusing on; we are just looking to get the result for the fans because believe me they have been great.”

The support from Bulls fans has been one of the driving forces behind Potter’s men this season and Cummins paid tribute to their sterling contribution, both on the terraces and in helping to keep the club alive with their fundraising efforts.

He added: “With the situation as it is there are some young men here with their backs against the wall and they are fighting for their careers, as are the coaching staff.

“We are desperate to do well for ourselves but also for the supporters who have been outstanding.

“There is a proud group here – the players, the volunteer staff and the fans.

“You only have to look at the game at Huddersfield and it was outstanding what they contributed, not just in numbers but also in the noise they made.

“It’s a special place to be at the moment, not ideal because of the situation but a very special place nevertheless.”

Fit-again Olivier Elima, poised to join Catalan Dragons at the end of the season, is set to replace the injured John Bateman in the second row tonight.

We as fans need to give it one final 'Odsal push' for this year! We've received some really positive news for the first time in months and the team are really performing well. We need to reward the the efforts of the Players, Coaches, Volunteer's with a stirring reception before, during and after the game to demonstrate to Mr Khan and Co that his decision to invest in our Club will bear fruit for future. Thank you Omar and Gerry, we the fans salute you. We know there are going to be difficult times ahead but together we will be strong - strong as Bulls!

What are the RFL messing about for. Bradford Bulls Holdings Ltd was awarded a three year SL Licence. Bradford Bulls Holdings Ltd has now been taken over by OK Bulls Ltd. Surely OK Bulls has now bought the remaining two years of the licence.

If we now have a further month to decide if the Bulls or Featherstone or Leigh etc should be in SL next season whoever it is wont have enough time to sign any players for next season!

Apparently they RFL is concerned the bulls might have an advantage by going onto admin!

Thats why we were docked 6 points. Wakefield only lost 4 last year and were allowed to stay in SL. Hull got new owners last year but didnt have to reapply for SLstatus either.

Come on RFL get your act together and make a statement now. The club didnt go bust, we just have a new owner.

Fully agree with your comments, isn't it time the RFL gave us some credit for all our efforts, over the 16 years of Super League. They must bear some of the responsibility by purchasing the Stadium Lease at a much reduced value. (Where was the due diligence there) We much appreciate all the help and support the other Super League Clubs have given us.. Wakefield did not have to go through anything like we've gone through - and we would not wish this to happen to any other Club. COYB

Wakey survived because Crusaders RL pulled out. There was nobody else to take the last spot but Wakey. He may have bought BB holdings ltd. but the fact is we failed to achieve all the criteria of the license by entering administration, so our future hangs by a thread. If Omar Khan and Gerry Sutcliffe can prove to the RFL at the next 'mini licensing' that they have us on stable footing and have readdressed the criteria of the license we will be safe.

Not having a go at you Tom, there's been enough acrimony to float a barge over this affair, but the point is that no other Championship club was considered to take the vacant S/L licence, when the licence was granted to Wakefield because a club that wasn't a suitable candidate withdrew from the race. Of course we know they were deducted 4 points, but this to commence at the start of the season. So what I wish to convey is the double standards employed by the powers that be.
Wakefield since that time have prospered and for that, personally I am pleased in seeing it happen. The license system should be to help clubs prosper not to hinder, the process.

The license/franchise, system is faulty. This has been said for a while. Watkins at rfl wants the system out. Bringing back promotion and relegation. A much fairer system.two up, two down.

The superleague clubs want the Bulls in superleague, as the club representatives stated unanimously a couple of weeks ago. Why then are the RFL being so formalistic with regard to determining which clubs deserve a license for next season? I agree with the above posts which question the justice of that decision. I can only speculate that the RFL want to be seen to be judicious and fair to all, But does anyone think that Leigh, Fev or Halifax are ready at present to take up a place in superleague next season.l All the reports suggest they are building up to applications in 2014. In any case can any of these three guarantee average attendances of 10000. In the end the Bulls should retain their place for now; whether they do in 2014 will depend on what happens on and off the field in the next two years, and whether the new owners will bring financial stability and good management.
