Longer-term Super League option a relief to Jamie Langley at Bradford Bulls

Jamie Langley admits that he and several Bulls team-mates had considered leaving the club if they were forced to drop down into the Championship Jamie Langley admits that he and several Bulls team-mates had considered leaving the club if they were forced to drop down into the Championship

Jamie Langley believes the Bulls are an integral part of Super League.

Now that the 13 other top-flight clubs have backed a 14-team division, thus reducing the chances of crisis-hit Bradford being demoted to the Championship, Odsal ’s longest-serving player says the competition would be the poorer without them in it.

Loose forward Langley said: “I know I’m a bit biased, and that Super League would go on without us, but it wouldn’t be the same without Bradford Bulls.”

Super League clubs, who also backed the Bulls’ prospective new owners at the same meeting, would probably be better off in terms of television money were the Bulls to drop down.

But 28-year-old Langley is glad they are taking a longer-term approach and said: “The Bulls have a tremendous fan base to take to away games and clubs have realised this.”

Another problem were the Bulls to be demoted to the Championship would be that it would leave 13 clubs, with all the problems that that would bring in terms of byes and more midweek matches.

Thinking of the physical aspect, Langley said: “The players probably wouldn’t mind the odd week off to recover but a 13-club league is something that needs to be thought about over a period of two or three years, rather than as a knee-jerk reaction.”

Langley has, however, admitted that the Bulls’ financial meltdown has forced him to consider a life away from Odsal.

The only remaining member of the Bradford side that last won a Grand Final in 2005, he is contracted to the club for another year.

It is to be hoped that a deal to buy the Bulls can finally be struck this week but Langley said the uncertainty of the last few months had made him weigh up his options as he bids to prolong his career at the highest level.

“I’m sure it has crossed everybody’s mind because you’ve got to account for what might happen in any walk of life,” he said.

“If there’s a chance that the job or career you are in might not be extending itself, you’ve got to look at other avenues.

“We can’t do that yet because of our contracts but I’m sure if we get an announcement in the coming days – such as the club going into the Championship – then we can go on and pursue other things and other clubs potentially.

“It’s our career, it’s our jobs, and I’m sure if we’re not in Super League then there will be plenty of boys getting on the phone to their managers to see what other options are out there.”

BCFC LAD obviously knows precious little about rugby league. Langley has been a hard-working servant to the club who doesn't look to steal the glory, but just gets on and does it. As for being overpaid, that's far from the case. Compared to soccer professionals, rugby league players earn a pittance.
Good luck Jamie, you're a real hero.

"Jamie Langley believes the Bulls are an integral part of Super League. "

To be honest, we are. The Bulls are one of the highest supported clubs, one of the most marketable, and to be honest, the Superleague needs Saints, Wigan, Leed and Bradford in there to be successful. Hull, Warrington and Huddersfield you can also argue the case, but nationally are the as commercial as the "big 4" of the sport. I still believe the one club superleague can not manage with is Wigan, I once heard that to have a strong rugby league you need to have a strong Wigan.

Rugby/Super league is a commercial product, it can not afford to lose any of it's prized assets. Could you imagine a Premiership without Man U? How about a Champions League finals, at least the knock out stages without Barca or a world cup with Brazil?

Bulls bring a lot into superleague, and that includes tv money. Superleague would be a less attractive product without Bulls, Wigan, Saints and Leeds. Remember Wigan were struggling big time and maybe we should be grateful that the sport see the importance of such teams, even if supporters of smaller clubs don't. Could Halifax, Keighley, Batley or Dewsbury help promote RFL on a national or international scale?

Superleague loses the Bulls, they also lose a hell of a lot of fans through the gate, SKY will lose viewers. Why do you think Superleague Europe was very interested in buying them even for just the short term. I have heard disgruntled Wakey supporters over the years how they don't get the same treatment in dire financial times compared to big clubs, as horrible as it sounds, there is a reason. The RFL and SL are more interested in the big picture, about their product as a whole. No club is bigger than the sport, but the sporting body does realise that the sport is only as successful of the clubs that represent it.

Agree entirely with your last two posts.

We need to keep the big clubs active and successful. They keep the League afloat, and whilst the smaller clubs carp on about how badly they are treated, where would they be without the big money earners for the game?
It's a balancing act at the best of times, isn't it? But begin eroding from the top and the bottom will soon go belly up. Answer oblivion!

You only have to see SKY'S reaction to our plight, even in administration we have probably brought more viewers that some of the lesser unfashionable games played.
And that's not disrespecting the efforts of any team. It's a fact of life that the Bulls have been big media business from the start of Super League. Apart from the poor seasons from 2006 to the administration and regime change.

Incidently have you noticed that of the 30 or so posts only a small handfull are actually relevant to the story???? Parasites seem to get everywhere don't they?

It is like that on a lot of blogs, I never read them, think there is more important things in life to worry about. It is good though to get other people's opinions, see other people's views or in the stark contrast of things, read back my own thoughts and to see if I have been wrong or ignorant on things. I try and post level headed comments, and I do try and stay on topic. One thing I won't get involved in is the tit for tat and blatant abuse what some people on here do, makes boring reading and even the same stuff week all the time, even people that reply that have "good intentions" for the rest of us. They are just feeding it and actually making things worse. The problems are not the trolls, but the ones that feed the trolls.

It's a pitty Langers has had his injury problems as I would have liked to have seen him as full captain for one year before he retires. He may not be the best player but he has the biggest heart of anyone at the club. A real club man who is proud to wear the shirt. I bet other clubs would be lining up even now to sign him. I would like to see him move to the front row next year as I still have very high hopes for Donaldson at 13 if he stays fit.

Donaldsons injuries would have put off lesser players. Hopefully he can get back to playing and stay injury free because he has great potential.

Think you've a point there Salford.

It's almost like giving the bottom 8 clubs a seperate competition element amongst themselves, with the top 6 clubs in their Grand Final.

Don't know how it would work, as it would be like Super League 1 and Super League 2 but in the same context as the current league.

Just a comment about Jamie Langley, because after all the story was about him.

I have noticed over the years he has played for us, that his influence is far reaching in the game.
Firstly his defensive efforts are first class, in that he tackles anything in front of him. He is actually a great motivator and these type of players are the backbone of every team. They inspire other players and always lead by example.
I for one would be sorry if he left us.
A thoroughly good player and a decent human being. Let's hope he stays with us to bring the youngsters along. Incidently if anyone says he's overated the opta stats. at the last game gave him a score of 1043 points, which was way above any of the other players from all other teams.
