Mick Potter left to rue Bradford Bulls errors in derby clash

Mick Potter admitted individual errors cost the Bulls dear as they slipped to a 34-16 defeat at rivals Leeds in front of a bumper Headingley crowd of 18,520 last night.

The scores were level at 6-6 at the break after Elliott Whitehead’s superbly-worked try was cancelled out by Kallum Watkins.

Bulls full back Brett Kearney, who had helped to create Whitehead’s early opener and was influential throughout the opening 40 minutes, did not reappear for the second half.

He had taken a knock which led to him suffering from concussion and the game gradually slipped away from the Bulls after the break.

After Watkins scored his second to put Leeds ahead, he then capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Jarrod Sammut and Karl Pryce, who between them failed to deal with a high bomb from Zak Hardaker.

Watkins picked up the loose ball and ushered Shaun Lunt over the line before the Rhinos scored again through Hardaker, with Danny McGuire and Kevin Sinfield punishing further mistakes in the Bradford rearguard.

Potter said: “Perhaps the score didn’t reflect how the game was. “It was just unfortunate that we came up with a couple of errors at crucial times, resulting in six points each time.

“Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes the other team forces the issue.”

Reflecting on the mix-up between Sammut and Pryce, Potter said: “I spoke to them after the game about that incident.

“Karl said he called and Jarrod said he didn’t hear him but a simple communication breakdown like that burns you.”

Potter picked Sammut ahead of Ben Jeffries and explained: “I just tried Jarrod.

“He had only missed a week and I had been really impressed with what he did against Wigan, so he came back in.

“Jarrod probably broke even tonight with his performance.

“He also showed his ability to break the line and that’s why we brought him to the club.”

The loss of Kearney, Potter acknowledged, was a serious blow to the Bulls.

He added: “Brett got a couple of knocks in the first half and he wasn’t able to come back on. He had concussion and was vomiting at half-time.

“He was very good for us during the first half and came up with some big plays and nice touches. He’s a key player for us.”

Next Sunday’s trip to Warrington could be Potter’s last but the Australian is eagerly awaiting news on whether the Bulls can find a buyer.

Confusion reigns over whether the ABC consortium have tabled a bid to buy the crisis-torn club but Potter said: “I’ll see what happens this week. There’s some talk that something may transpire.”

* The Bulls Under-20s lost 46-8 to Leeds last night, with Rob Hawthorne and Jay Rossi on the scoresheet for a Bradford side featuring Elliot Kear, Jason Crookes and Phil Joseph.

The errors at vital times in this game just about summed it up. But it was not only in defence but a couple of times in attack,we seemed to overplay when on the Leeds line, when a bit more patience could have produced scores.Losing Brett Kearney didnt help, up to him being injured he was our best player.Take out the mistakes and this team matched a very good Leeds side.Once more the Bulls following was great and their support for the lads both during the game and after was noisy and unabating. To be fair to the Leeds fans they were good and especially the applause they gave to the Under20 team after their game.Lets hope for positive news next week.COYB.

The lads were superb in the first half, Kearney particularly and only crucial errors prevented the bulls staying toe to toe with the world chumps. Fair play to Leeds though they showed solid goal line defence for long spells, even when misery guts sinfield was sin binned.
Certainly feel loss of kearney at half time was turning point and too many errors gifted Leeds easy points. Still, the lads gave everything as always and the future looks good if we can get contracts tied up quickly. COYB

True Birchlane, the future does look good with this team and a few more quality signings. The support last night was fANtastic. Just hope that it is just games that are being played right now over the offer and it all gets sorted out at the last minute which i suspect it will. The RFL must have seen last night and shuddered at the thought of losing that in future.
.
It's a pitty all bulls supporters hadn't produced a petition and sent it to SKY threatening to cancel their SKY contracts if they allowed the Bulls to fold. That would have made them phone the RFL for a chat about sorting it out quickly.

I really admire your posts Prycey but realistically mate you are living in a fantasy world. There are NO quality players left to sign and if this mess doesn't get sorted out very, very shortly, the squad will start to disintegrate. We have already lost Elima and Crookes and several more are rumoured to have signed for other clubs. I repeat what I said at the start; there are no quality players left on the market to sign. If we are seriously considering Fielden- a player who hasn't made an appearance for 18 months - it shows what the situation is. We already have too many players like that in the squad.

That's something that City can control, our wolf in sheeps clothing vindictive personality.

The Bulls are not in control of the situation as it unfolds.

So kindly take yourself into the land of obscurity, you are not remotely witty or anything else for that matter.

Lets hope that saving City does not happen, what a waste of time! Bradford City, low level football team with bad management, Bradford Bulls, top level team with bad management! Get a grip! You all go on about how good Valley Parade is but also mention saving Bradford City from relegation. Think about it!

If the Bulls are allowed to fold or relegated my Sky is cancelled and I will wash my hands of SL for good, just cant happen, even the RFL are not that stupid. See how Scottish football goes downhill with the crazy decision to put them down 2 divisions.

You don't honestly believe that you can compare the dulls to Rangers FC do you.
Rangers are a massive club with a huge following, their downfall will no doubt have a massive effect on Scottish football.
The dulls going out of SL will have a very negligible, if any, effect on RL in this country.
Maybe if more of your fans didn't subscribe to sky they would have been able to afford to pay a proper price for a season ticket instead.

Potter picking Sammut over Jeffries was very costly. Jeffries stats speak for themselves and he didn't deserve to be dropped.Changing a winning side when there are no injuries is stupid. Should have kept the momentum going from the London game.

As a rhinos fan, I can't help but think if Leeds were in that position, would Bradford bulls care? I don't think so.
If I was a Bradford fan though, my question would be, where is all the money then? Some dodgy get knows!!
Also, not just cause we get easy couple of wins every year but I would prefer bulls to stay in SL because there isn't really anyone to replace you! Although ont other hand you have broken the rules and obviously you can't be fined because your still begging for handouts, but have to be punished!

Actually Save2020, In respect of your first point, you would be surprised - the majority of Bulls fans -notwithstanding banter - would definitely want your side in SL without hesitation. From entering the 'oak' numerous Leeds expressed their hopes that the Bulls survive, as it was in the ground. That's because the vast majority of decent people not only support their team but also the game in general - seriously, how could the demise of the Bulls be a positive situation for the world of Rugby League. I wouldn't want any side in our sport to go under - absoluely NO team! As for punishment - who gets punished? Any of the Directors who got us into this mess? NO - those people are long gone - so punish the Coaches, Players, Supporters, Back Room Staff etc etc - How do any of those people deserve punishment?

Very true, I like both players but Jefferies kicking is superb and is able to break a goal line defence. We were camped on their line with no ideas apart from pryces last try, when the game was gone.

Potter may have thought it worth trying Sammut for his unpredictability, but unfortunately it didn't work. It actually had a contrary effect. Jeffries's experience would have been more valuable.
Nevertheless we lost and it was probably due to the fact we had been on a high and everybody has a down period after a good run, let's hope we can move on from this and start a good run again with some positive move for the club.

Dead right. Seven of us bulls met with our rhino mates on Friday at the taps and had great banter, sometimes a bit vicious, as usual. I met them in walkabout after the world final and celebrated a victory over the Aussies with them. This is supporting the game in general and being totally biased towards your own club when required. Not kicking others when they're down, but I suppose that's what some of the people posting on here would also do, if they ever dared to play the game? They know who they are!

Its only banter! Rugby league is one of those team sports where opposing fans can interact with other fans and socialise and chat before and after games. And like I mentioned before, I would prefer Bradford bulls in SL than any current alternative. I also remember the bulls in there hey day giving us thumpings on a regular basis! Anyway, different circumstances etc but remember when Wigan were nearly relegated a few years ago? I don't think for 1 second the RFL were going to let that happen either if they did finish bottom.

Interesting timing!
I feel promotion and relegation should be introduced again, but promotion would not necessarily suit all clubs. For instance the transformation and development of Batley under Karl Harrison and John Kear has been an amazing success story but what would promotion do to them?

I for one wouldnt want to see any team thrown out of superleague because of the mismanagement of directors, I accept there has to be a punishment, I take my hat off to the majority of the Leeds fans on Friday night and the south standers actually applauding our players at the end of the game that was quality, some Leeds fans actually have a very short memory as this almost happened to them, they were on the verge of bankruptcy when Caddick came in and saved the day, and Hetherington has a tight grip on those purse strings remember Barrie McDermott was a Bradford player, although he never actually played for us. What is concerning me more at the moment is the whitewash going on behind the scenes with the rfl and Guilfoyle, I glanced at last weeks rugby league express when it says and I quote "the consortiums offer is quite unsatisfactory" but last week the rfl stated they had received no offer but Guilfoyle insists an offer has been made, please someone just tell us the bloody truth

Very true Batley Bull, valid points, i just wish we could get the truth and find out if we have a future. At trhe moment its cloak and dagger stuff, the players, coaches and admin staff whos futures are hanging by a thread certainly deserve better than this. The fans have been superb throughout this season, i was at Leeds on Friday and felt proud to wear the colours, please just let us know what is happening, it breaks my heart to think we may not have a team to follow.
