Bulls coach Mick Potter has hailed fit-again winger Elliot Kear following his stylish return to action against London Broncos last weekend.

The Wales international, 23, sustained a badly broken wrist against Warrington on March 3 and was sidelined for nine matches.

But he was back in action during the stirring comeback win at Leyton Orient and played the full 80 minutes at full back.

The close-season signing from Crusaders grew in stature as the game wore on, underlining his class and versatility as first-choice No 1 Brett Kearney battles to shake off an ankle injury.

“Elliot has played a fair bit at full back before, so it wasn’t unusual for him,” said Potter.

“He can play in that position and do well there. He’s busy, he’s lively and he’s also brave. That was the quality that I liked most about Elliot last week at London.

Potter also feels that scrum half Luke Gale will begin to exert a growing influence on the Bulls following his own return from injury.

Gale missed ten games after damaging ankle ligaments against Wigan in February but has played in the past two matches.

“Luke is still working his way back into the team but I thought he got better as the game went on at London,” said Potter.

“His kicking game is coming along and he’s starting to steer the team around the park.

“Last week was only his second game back and he will be better next week against Salford and better again the week after that.”

Potter is now preparing his men for Friday’s trip to Salford and is urging them to ensure there is no repeat of the sluggish start which allowed London to race 16-0 ahead last weekend.

He said: “As a coach you strive for perfection from your players. I was disappointed with how we started but I was happy with the way they fought back and the grit that they showed.

“They were good fightback qualities but we can’t do that against the better teams in the competition.”

Could be a good move, with Kear at full back. Puts pressure on Kearney. B.K has not been brilliant at full back, could be better at 6 with gale at 7. Playing for places is always good for any team.

Yes I agree and it is always good when a fast fullback can pop up into a gap between the other backs.

Agree with above. Elliott is obviously another good young player to have at the club and we are lucky to have him. I would definitely try BK at 6, I do like Sammut but thus far we lack a little something in the halves, hopefully with Gale getting fully fit and players fighting for places to partner him things will sharpen up in that area. If so I think the 2nd half of the season can be good for us.

At the start of the season, I was dissapointed when Briggs was loaned to Fev. I have never been a big fan of jeffries but he has been very good with his kicking game. Its a shame that Sammutt got injured he has also been good. We certainly have plenty of competition for places when they are all fit. A much better place than the last few years. What does everybody think about the half back pairings ?

Unfortunately due to injuries we have not been able to see how the half’s would pair up.
Gale and Jeffries at the start did look promising , Jeffries and Sammut started to show some good signs, so until we see how Sammut would slot in with Gale or even Kearney, I think it’s going to be hard to say.
There is one thing for sure who ever emerges as the number one pairing , we are in for some very good games.

Kear is a better fullback than Keaney. Would play him there unless he is needed on the wing due to any injuries there. Unfortunately when all the 6 & 7s are fit its going to be a headache for Potter, but that's what he is there for.

Kearney is wanted by hull fc since their full back went back home. he's been a good player for us but could kear be better?? will have to wait and see the outcome of the financial mess and see who we have left at the end of it all.

Competition for places and wages is what we need. Investors hopefully will come, and when (if) they do the second half of this season looks good.
Maybe we just need a one more BIG forward. but backs and half backs looking good for now.

I could never understand how supporters thought Kearney was like white slice. He is a good player, but nothing like Mumby, Spruce, Withers etc and even Platt (first 11 games for the Bulls) were better. However he deserves to be in the team somewhere.

Reread the article "In some tough situations, he put his body on the line and came up with some brave plays that other people might have shied away from" . Nothing to do with him being a risk to play after injury. Was the quote an dig that some players' defense is not as good as Kear's?

The substitutes have usually been all forwards/utility players. With more of the backs being available, it could mean Mr Potter can have a utility back in the four substitutes. This would create greater options within the backs and also generate more competition in the forwards. With Sammut back on the quota next year both he and Kearney have points to make. Ultimately, though, we need our best half-back pairing playing regularly in the halves. If Jeffries is set to retire at the end of the season, it would be prudent to give Gale and Kearney an extended run. Just my opinion though.

I teach dyslexics and the posts above by someone who is pretending to be dyslexic is actually taking the p**s out of them. Cut it out. Other people are falling for it.
