Paul Sykes in contention for Bradford Bulls start

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Paul Sykes Paul Sykes

Paul Sykes could be handed the vacant stand-off berth after being named in the Bulls’ 19-man squad for Saturday's home clash with St Helens.

Sykes has not featured for the first-team yet this season but is in contention to replace Jarrod Sammut, who serves a one-match ban.

Bradford are boosted by the return of Olivier Elima and Adrian Purtell and Jamie Langley is hoping to shrug off a rib injury and be passed fit.

Nick Scruton is sidelined with a shoulder problem, though, and there is no place in the squad for Phil Joseph.

Bulls squad: Addy, Bateman, Burgess, Crookes, Diskin, Elima, Har-greaves, Jeffries, Kearney, Langley, L'Estrange, Lulia, Manuokafoa, Platt, Pryce, Purtell, Sykes, Walker, Whitehead

Addy or Jeffries as goal kicker?

If not then of course Sykes would have to play because he can kick goals. We don't know if Langley will be passed fit yet.

Potter for the sack says...

Kearney could be SH, Jeffries SO and Sykes Fb. Kearney's first friendly against Leeds at headingley he played a blinder at SH and Sykes played well in the friendly against Castleford this year. Rest Addy or Pryce? Anybodies guess, but Potter will choose the best team as he knows the strengths & weaknesses of the squad members more than we fans do.

It's crazy. We talked of all this halfback cover pre season then Potter off loads Briggs. Gale has a very unfortunate injury and Sammutt is up to his usual tricks of doing the daftest things at the wrong time. Suddenly we are reduced to considering Sykes for SO. Just as things are looking up we shoot ourselves in the foot yet again.

My thoughts exactly murpyslaw, I said at the start of the season that it was a mistake to let Briggs go and as usual it has come back to haunt us, wonder if there was something going on with Briggs and MP that we were not aware of. I suppose we should give Sykes a chance - but admit he is a worry - hope he proves me wrong. COYB !!!!!

It's hard to say who the coach will go with at half back, though I understand Sykes played at least some of the last U20s game at stand off, so maybe that's the way he thinking, also he's a goalkicker which might swing it. Maybe, like last season, he may switch the fullback job with Kearney. I think the talk about Briggs is a red herring to be honest, he is fourth choice and Sammut is out for only one game, Briggs is better playing open age at Fev than playing U20s. At least we'll get a contribution to his wages from Fev.
On a positive note the return of Elima and Purtell will give some extra firepower, despite the probable loss of Langers and the definite loss of Scrutes. At least some are coming back.

I think people are too hard on Sykes. He is an agressive defender and can kick goals. Jeffries unable to kick goals as had on going injury from Wildcat days from goal kicking there (torn quad) although have seen him kick and would be No. 1 choice if not for it may tear again. Briggs needs to stay with Featherstone, is a waste just to bring him in for one match, although him and Jeffries did combined well last season before Herbert came back in. Go you bulls!

I would opt for Platt at fullback and Kearney at stand off. Sykes is a very erratic kicker at best-Addy looks far more confident the odd time I've seen him kick, also Kearney can kick from open play.
