Playing centre won’t put me in awkward position, says Bradford Bulls ace Elliott Whitehead

Elliott Whitehead proved his versatility against Castleford Elliott Whitehead proved his versatility against Castleford

Elliott Whitehead is not bothered where he plays as the Bulls prepare to cross swords with Wigan at Odsal.

Whitehead, 22, returned from a five-game ban to start in the back row at Castleford last weekend, but was switched to centre after Adrian Purtell went off injured.

Purtell will miss the next six weeks after he tore a pectoral muscle, raising the prospect of Whitehead staying in the centres alongside Chev Walker or Keith Lulia.

“I’ll do a job wherever I’m asked to play,” said Whitehead.

“Unfortunately Purts got injured and I got moved to centre at Cas but I played there last year and didn’t do too badly.

“My handling skills are all right… I can play stand-off if needed!

“But I think I’ll be playing in the back row this weekend. If Mick wants me to play centre then of course I’ll play centre. I’m not really bothered – I just want to play.

“I think I had to prove myself and play well to keep my spot in the team. Hopefully I did that.

“I felt like I was blowing a bit at times but I found my second wind and was fine in the second half.”

Having enjoyed an outstanding return to action, Whitehead is relishing the challenge of cutting Wigan down to size.

The Warriors underlined their quality with a highly impressive victory over Leeds last weekend.

Yet Whitehead said: “We showed what we were capable of at Cas and were glad to get that first win under our belts.

“We said throughout the week that we would train hard and get the result, and we did that.

“The lads showed we’ve got it in us to compete in Super League and it’s set us up nicely for the weekend now.

“We got confidence from the Cas win but it’s a different week and we have to focus on different individuals, such as Sam Tomkins.

“Wigan have got great depth and Tomkins is their best player by a mile.

“He’s different class but hopefully we can get a job done on him and nullify his threat.”

The Bulls’ defence was outstanding last week and Whitehead added: “We did a lot of goal-line defence and we proved to the supporters that we’re capable of defending our line.

“I think they had some doubts but we proved that we can do it and hopefully we can push on this week.”

Consistency is the key now boys and the effort put in last week has to be the minimum standard for the rest of the season.

While I dont expect us to beat Wigan I do hope the lads let Wigan know they have been in a game with some strong running and bone shuddering defence, If it looks like the team is putting effort in and trying then the support will come from the terrace instead of the boo's. I expect Wigan to bring a few so hopefully the club will make a bit of brass of the away supporters too.

If Carmont is injured then the pies will won't be as strong in that centre. If Lulia plays (he needs to) then he can attack whoever they have at centre and hopefully cause some problems.

Team for me:
1. Kearney
2. Kear
3. Lulia
4. Whitehead
5. Crookes/Pryce
6. Sammut
7. Gale
8. Hargreaves
9. Diskin
10. Kopczak
11. Sibbit
12. Walker
13. Langley

14. L'Estrange
15. Scruton
16. Burgess
17. Joseph

Would love to see Manuokafoa in the squad but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Bullslad - I reckon you are pretty spot on with the 17 - thats what I would run with anyway.

Think Nas is still a few weeks away, and understand that MP has already stated he will continue with Crookes on wing for now.

Would love to see Phil Joseph get a run out because I think he is an old school type forward with no nonsense and could look to ruffle a few feathers.

Yes it will be tough, but we can have a good crack. We have to be on the front foor from the word go.

Yeah it looks like Crookes will be on the wing opposite Kear, especially since Pyrce played for the Under 20's last night. I just hope which ever wing is against Richards can compete with him in the air. And the forwards can compete up the middle. Im not going to Odsal expecting a win, but I am expecting a good performance and a good game and if a win comes then thats Brilliant.

But equally had Raynor not been controversially dismissed in the 32nd minute. Would we have seen the same galvanised effort and motivation to a Bradford side lacking in any real confidence.

Sunday could be another distinctly uncomfortable afternoon but I'm optimistic that with Home debuts to Keith Lulia and Phil Joseph we can certainly match Wigan's physicality up front.

I don't expect a win but I do expect us to compete. Need to see a good work rate without giving away stupid penalties and some better ball control. I must confess, though, that Potter's team selections bemuse me at times. Where is Jophes? Why give him a contract and leave him kicking his heels?
