Mick Potter worried by ease with which Bradford Bulls are brushed aside down middle

Jamie Langley receives congratulations for his try it was too little too late to rescue the Bulls from a heavy defeat Jamie Langley receives congratulations for his try it was too little too late to rescue the Bulls from a heavy defeat

Bulls coach Mick Potter admitted his side came up short after they were emphatically defeated 34-12 in their Super League opener at home to Catalan Dragons.

Potter fielded four debutants in Adrian Purtell, Elliot Kear, Jarrod Sammut and Luke Gale but the French visitors were simply too strong up front and too vibrant in the backs.

They outscored the Bulls by six tries to two after playing, coaching and administrative staff had worked hard clearing snow from the pitch and terraces from early morning yesterday to ensure the game went ahead.

Former Bradford hooker Ian Henderson led from the front as the understrength visitors, missing Leon Pryce and a clutch of other injured players, dominated the physical battle, affording half-backs Setaimata Sa and Scott Dureau the freedom to play.

Potter said: “We were beaten down the middle, so it does worry us. There were times where we showed a bit of fight but overall the other team got the better of us.”

The coaching staff are always saying they will put these basic rugby techniques right but do not seem to be having much success. There must be improvement forthcoming otherwise Mr Potter and his staff could well be looking for alternative employment. It has to get better quickly; this lack of technique, commitment and physique has been with the Bulls too long. When did it start in the Super League era? Answers below please.

We need to get the props sorted out. Potter needs to tell them already they are playing for their future. Scruton, Hargreeves & Kopjack were a joke yesterday. No aggresion or anything. Dominated in the tackle and killed at the ruck by Henderson. We should know all about that little runt as he was a good player for us.
.
Until we can get the pack motivated and hitting hard in D and running hard with aggresion we will win Sweet FA.
.
The Pack lost us the game and didnt want to know, we need Elima & Whitehead urgently. Scuton & Hargreves should be dropped. Play langley @ prop n bring Joseph on to the bench. with Donaldson starting at 13.

Good points about the pack eddie. Today, not for the first time our 'big lads' played like 'big girls' - sorry ladies, no disrespect intended. They were soft, easily bossed and reluctant to tackle. Langley, Scrutes, Sibbet, Hargreaves and Tom B were pushovers today. Elima appears to be the only forward we have with any aggression.

Agreed with above, sibbit brings nothing for me. Langley for me tackles his heart out, yesterday was involved in 3 tackles of Catalans first set and should have been given a blow. When are we onna start running lines, just seen Gilmours try for Giants yesterday, how many of our back rowers can run a good line breaker?????

The worst thing was that there was just no heart or anything from the Bradford forwards. Only young bateman was doing ok until he got injoured.

Tom burgess was awful against hull with his constant dropping of the ball but yesterday took the biscuit, he's useless and only capable of a 15 min stint. Scruton where oh where has scruton gone????? He was invisible yesterday.

Problem is when we are talking Scruts, Hargreaves, L'Estrange Diskin,Sammutt, Kear and Kearney when we used to talk Fielden, Anderson, Vagana, Lowes, Robbie, Spruce, Withers, Vaikona, Big Les etc., The club has simply fallen off the radar. Its going to take a lot more than Potter, St Hillaire and the current mottley crew to do anything about it and thats me with my 'positive' hat on.

I'm starting to question Potter, why has he shipped Briggs to Fev? Last season, on the few rare chances he got, he seems capable of making something happen, injecting a spark and just looked busy and eager (unlike a lot of the team), I really think he must have some personally differences with Potter, can't see any other reason he shouldn't be starting every week.
.
I don't think you should bring your personal issues to work, so Potter is failing on that count.
.
How many other players are having issues? Wonder if there's something behind the scenes making the players not want to put their bodies on the line for the coach?

This team is better than what we saw yesterday. The worry for me is that it does come down to the man I have given my support to – and that is Potter. I gave him 6 weeks to prove he has done his job. Yesterday’s performance looks like nothing has changed. 7 games will go by very quickly and that is a quarter of the season. The problem is that if things don’t improve over the next 2 months or so Mick will be finished even if he does stay till August. Can we really spend the money we received from the RFL on paying off the coaches as in my eyes all three would need to go? Doing that mid season hardly ever works!
I came away yesterday actually feeling sorry for Hood. Like him or dislike him he has backed Potter. We are spending the cap this year and he doesn’t meddle in the coach’s job. The majority of supporters did like the signing of Potter. The directors must have been gutted and concerned last night as we all are. They must also be wondering whether they may need to make a big decision in the coming future.
At this moment I conclude that we stay calm and support the lads to the hilt – but there is a limit, even for me. I would not take any snap decisions and see what the situation is in May. If it hasn’t improved I would then look for a young Ausie assistant coach who wants his first head coaching job in the same way Wigan did with McGuire two years ago. I wouldn’t panic and cry for Lowes, Noble, Kear or even Elliot. We are stuck with this team of players and coaches. It is up to them to save their jobs. They have two months to do that. If they don’t, then we get good advice and start interviewing young, strong coaches who can come in and kick a*se.

Good sensible comments from Prycey as usual. Kopjack needs to get back to running the ball in hard. He did that inm the 4 nations and did well. Yesterday he was trying to be James Graham.
I thought Purtell showed yesterday he is a winger and not a center. When Fit Keith Lulia will add strike but apart from him and an aussie prop who couldnt buy a game, Elima & Whitehead, what else do we have to come in.

This more or less mirrors my view. Problem is these players have largely been around Super League long enough for most of us to see they are not good enough so your 'two months' of grace will not make a scrap of difference. What many people will not accept is that most other teams are better coached and have better players and this has something to do with why they keep beating us.

Prycey you know I like what you have to say, commented on it before.
The big thing for me yesterday was the old one - Men against Boys! I don't just mean that in age but stature, performance, guts, passion and ditermination.
I don't particullarly like Potter, don't think he brings a great deal to the party. Only coach in Super League era not to win silver at Saints. THAT SAID, he is our coach, and until Hood or whoever else is involved says any different we are "stuck" with him!
Moden coaching methods are all well and good, but unless one is playing with commitment and pride then they mean nothing. Keep them in the dark and feed them raw meat! You know what I mean. I said it last season - WE NEED TO GET NASTY!!!
I know a lot of the up front, in your face aggression is not in the game as it used to be in 80s/90s but that's what we need.
As a player, you knew when you came to Odsal you were in for a bit of biff and a hard time up front, that was a given. We need that back.
I see people like Johm Hamer around the ground on match days. That fella NEVER took a backwards step. Players like Bernard Dwyer - whats he up to?
No disrispect to StH, but he never really did it at the top level did he?
TIME TO FIGHT BOYS And I mean fight. At least make other teams THINK about what they may have to face when they come to Odsal.

Summer era: 1996-presentIn 1996, the first tier of British rugby league clubs played the inaugural Super League season and changed from a winter to a summer season. As the sport in Britain entered a new era, Bradford rose to prominence. The club won the Super League championship in 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2005, the Challenge Cup in 2000 and 2003 and the World Club Challenge in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

As for Burgess agree with the comments crap, but it's not how you play and what you know but who you know and there is another play in the team that has got there on the back of that as well. MeccaBingo got it in one a shower of sh*te and will continue to be so. This was the first game of the season what did Diskin say we intend to get off to a flying start; never got off the ground mate and from yesterdays performance you never will. You get more commitment and passion from amateur games the lot of you should be ashamed of yourselves and not wearing the shirt

Compare the demeanour of the coaches yesterday after the games. Sean Wane was hopping mad and his players were obviously going to have to feel some pain at training. Tony Smith was quietly furious. Milward was his usual cocky and confident self. Poor Potter looked totally shell-shocked and could only mutter about being beaten in the middle of the park. What's more he was wearing a Catalans' scarf - not keeping his eye on the PR ball there.
A new defence coach or a new coach altogether? Probably nothing can be done about this until the end of the season for financial reasons. But Brian Noble anyone? With him in charge, there would be fighting spirit, total commitment, good analysis. We would not be world beaters but we would at least be respectable.

My thoughts exactly Bone Idle, I wonder if there is something going on with MP/Briggs that we are not aware of - what has this lad done? He made a great start to last season against Leeds, then went to London on loan hopefully to give him more game time, suffered an injury and didnt settle. He said that he wanted to come back to Bulls and fight for his place, and then without a chance in the first team he has gone to Fev, this lad should be playing his rugby at Odsal.

The problem we have had for years now is not the training, the fitness or the capability of players but the attitude of mind.
It feels to me that we can only look far enough forward to see or should I say hope for a win against the team we play this week when we are bigger than that. The ultimate goal is a win at the grand final in October and this should be in mind from the first kick of the season.
It has been said here and I fully agree we need to get nasty...what does it say on the wall, BRUTAL UNCOMPROMISING...... It is not a dinner dance, grow some, and let them be worried about coming to Odsal. Defend the twenty as if it was the try line and attack beyond their try line. Lets have the attitude in attack of yes we can but the attitude in defence of NO THEY WON'T. Yesterday was a very sad day and made us yet again look idiots in defence for which there is no excuse year on year. The only saving grace about yesterday was we had to walk out from the small number of lovely french supporters with our heads hung low...it could have been worse! As Prycey rightly says "At this moment I conclude that we stay calm and support the lads to the hilt – but there is a limit, even for me"

Totally agree. How many times did a Bulls player get hold of the opposition then just let go! Call it bad technique or what. It happened all last year. Don't let the new players, who actually looked good at times, change their ways. Sort it out Potter!!! The supporters pay your wages!!!

Bone_idle18 says...

The players need to tackle without regard to their health. I know it's an old cliché to say "put their body on the line2 but that is what is required. At the moment, and for the last few seasons, there's been players who have been far less determined to stop the opposition than the opposition were to score.
.
I don't think it's techniques, ability or strength that is the issue, it's all between their ears, there's something stopping them going that extra yard and committing themselves 100% to the team.
.
It may be a confidence issue, or it may be motivational, or something else altogether, but there's definitely something not quite right.

I sent an e mail in regarding the poor defence over the friendly games we have played and yesterdays performance reiterates that

The question was answered in that we had improved Mr Potter please go and purchase some glasses if we have improved , why were we so bad yesterday

My wife could have made a better effort some of those players were not interested

We stood with supporters who stated that until the team improves they will not be going to any away games .

I've lived away from Bradford for many years and don't get to Odsal as much as I'd like. I've just bought the new home shirt ... first new one since 1996 and we all know what that year signified with that memorable game at Wembley which in my view was the start of better things to come.

Hopefully my new shirt will bring some luck to the Bulls, starting at Wheldon Rd on Sunday. It's better do, because otherwise I see (more) tough times ahead.

I wasn't being serious. Harrison would be a good bet though, I'm sure the team wouldn't dare not perform for him.

To all my fan club,
I hope you can remember my posts from last season I told you potter was a cabbage then and guess what he still is? All he's done is sign journey men hoping they would gell and make him look like an half descent coach, same old same old ****.
Trent Robinson in just one season turned catalan dragons round.
Michael McGuire turned Wigan round in one season but are friend, mr potter is now on his third, and by the way we played yesterday it will be his last In charge!!!

you cant have a good super league team when you have halfpenny millionares at the helm and have them signing 2nd rate players to replace 2nd rate players.no money equals failure.

I love our club. But what the hell is going on. Why was nothing sorted this morning? Other coaches were going ballistic after losing. Why wasn't today a military beasting like Wane was promising Wigan. 'Bulls Hit for Six' just needed the first 's' moving over a bit. On a separate note, Odsal yesterday was so quiet - no-one creates an atmosphere anymore. We are the quietest fans by a mile. Then again, we haven't much to chant about. Hoping for a minor miracle or even lowly Widnes will fancy overturning us.

Sorry gemma, even with the addition of a rose, your opinions don't get any sweeter! ;-)
.
Couple of questions for you if you care to answer them. Outside of Sibbit, who do you consider are our so called 'journey men'?
.
Bye the way Potter turned Catalans round like Trent Robinson seems to have.
.
You say Potter is now in in third season, remind me how we finished in the League at the end of his second term?
.
Always good to see your posts gemma- you make i laughhhh! Such deep knowledge about our simple game, is that what attracts you? (oops! thats 3 questions luv, sorry to confuse you)

Struth mate what a day at the office today ! I want to make it clear we are doing all we can to put things right for Sunday. We have set some new targets & we are sure we will only conceed 28 points this week & if we can score more than that then I think me might win.

Got a real selection dilema his week mate its a tough call who im gonna get to dish out the excusses on the blog ! I think I might have to recall Briggsy from Fev cos I dont think he`s had a go yet mate.

This week were gonna change our training style were gonna get out on the field & try put some moves together Toms gonna practice catching a ball along with Kearney & Scruts is gonna practice running forward up the feld in the right direction ! Disco`s gonna have a go at tackling & Sibbs is gonna practice breathing through his nose instead of blowing out of his bum.

Listen Bulls fans rest assured I love this place there`s not many jobs in the world where you can mess up week in week out & still keep ya job fair dinkum.Im here to stay & im gonna do my best to make sure we finish the season.

A couple of funny stories from this week we all sat & watched the game & pi++ed ourselves at the replay of Sundays game struth if was funny. The Peter Hood came along & has promised next year we will spend the full cap as long we can sell the lead off the club house roof.

Till next week see ya mate.

Phew! Don't, my old heart won't take that kind fright ;-)

Karl would be a step in the right direction but we can dream on.

In between time COME ON YOU BULLS!

It's not how you start it's how you finish

Bradford Sport is well in the doldrums!
Cannot somebody come up with a Master plan to encompass City and Bulls
with a nice stadium and get things moving?
Both teams are well below standard for a City as big and Proud as Bradford!

Mr Sheffield bull
I think you must have miss interpreted what I said about journey men!
What I ment was how many journeys they have made to the physio room .
the players mick potter has signed are all injury prone cast offs that nobody else wants
. I think you must shine mick potters shoes on match day ,or live next door to him! There is a lot of people on here giving mick potter stick !
So you will be busy!
trying to fight his corner . Happy tapping !,,,,,,,,, and has for you blackpool bull stick to candyfloss and donkey rides.
Buy the way Sheffield ! Give me a laugh where do you think we're going to finish !

Oh I see my mistake now gemma (aka "miss interpreted") rose cale.
.
....."All he's done is sign journey men hoping they would gell and make him look like an half descent coach, same old same old ****".... My fault, didn't see the reference to the 'physio room' - can't believe i missed that!
.
I'm not actually defending MP, I think you'll find I'm just stating facts in respect of his time at the Catalans - unless of course you know something that the rest of the Rugby League community doesn't!
.
I've spotted that you've chosen to ignore my question about Mick Potters 'difficult second season' - I now realise that your working on the 'Gemma Rose Cale' Calendar rather than the Gregorian one some of us seemingly observe around these parts.
.
Never one to dodge a question (unlike some) - I think we may just squeeze an 8th place spot, fingers and toes crossed, eh gem?
.
One more thing sweetie - I'm not wealthy enough to 'buy the whole way'.... know what i mean? wasted all my money on candyfloss and donkey rides - hey!, at least i've lived hun. X
