5:13pm Sunday 5th February 2012 in Bulls By Ross Heppenstall
Bradford Bulls 12 Catalan Dragons 34 The Bulls slipped to a humiliating opening-day defeat at the hands of Catalan Dragons at Odsal in this afternoon's Super League opener.
Mick Potter's new-look side found themselves 20-0 behind at the break after the defensive frailties which undermined them so often last season were again exposed.
They trailed inside the sixth minute when Dragons loose forward Jason Baitieri collected a pass from Setaimata Sa to cross the line from close range.
Scott Dureau, a pivotal figure at scrum-half for Catalan all afternoon, added the extras and continued to pull the strings.
The Bulls were dealt a blow when John Bateman picked up an injury as he contested a high ball and was helped off the field in the 17th minute.
Midway through the opening period, former Bulls hooker Ian Henderson produced a fine break down the middle and sent Clint Greenshields clear from 20 metres out.
It got worse for Bradford in the 30th minute when Thomas Bosc took a clever pass from Dureau to power clear and Dureau again added the extras.
The Bulls fashioned only one meaningful opening inside the first half but Jarrod Sammut failed to control the ball when just yards short of the line.
Dureau added a penalty on the stroke of half-time and three minutes after the restart Sa dummied his way past Ian Sibbit to cross in the right corner.
Dureau's conversion attempt rebounded off a post but in the 55th minute – after the Bulls had enjoyed a period of sustained pressure which they could not make pay – Catalan struck again.
Dureau chipped a delightful kick into the right corner and Daryl Millard touched down, and Dureau's conversion made it an afternoon to remember for ex-Bulls stars Henderson and Steve Menzies.
The Bulls replied in the 64th minute when Jamie Langley touched down in the right corner, which Luke Gale converted, but Sebastien Raguin crossed in the left corner for a sixth with four minutes remaining.
Elliot Kear plunged over in the last minute and Gale added his second goal but the game was long since finished as a serious contest.

I can understand frustration at the playing staff, but that group is better than the results preseason and today would suggest.
For me it's a case of Potter out along with st hilaire.
These journeymen(!) need inspiring, motivating and a bit of fire in their bellys!
We need a won next week otherwise we could well still be bottom after the Wigan game.

I'm uneasy about all that is happening at Odsal. The Bulls selling their lease so they aren't taken over, moved to Valley Parade and left to wither on the vine smacks of severe financial problems regardless of what Mr Hood(winker) says. Me thinks the club are in trouble and what goes onto the park is being severely affected by what's going on off it. Mr Hood sold out to the RFL to save his own position. What happened to the payment from the RFL for the lease? Don't blame the players on the pitch. It starts and stops with Peter Hood. It was time to go, Peter, twelve months ago, it still is.
Why has Briggs gone back to Fev?

Well, at least we weren't nilled! Catalan are a top six side and, today, the Bulls were not. It's a long season and for the die-hards, even longer. Nil desperandum. If the players are of sufficient quality then where is the problem? Time to take a lead from our football neighbours.

One does wonder what you doom and gloom supporters do in the off-season, training in negativity perhaps? I think what the Bulls need to do is concentrate on changing some of their supporters to positive 'I will get behind my team no matter what' supporters and not ones that write the team off after the first game of the season!

We do not play as a team its all one out rugby dull to watch & predictable. The squad is capable of top 8 imo but I dont think Potter has what it takes to instill the confidence & belief in the players. Our pack was poor today our halfs lacked communication & our wingers lacked ball. We can not call for Potters head after one game but its going to be a long season if we dont get 4 points from the next 3 games.Give it 6 games before calling for his head.

Defence awful. St Hilaire is clueless. I thought there were some positives: if Gale clicks with centres and wingers, we could have some decent strikepower. Purtell, Sammut and Kear looked promising. But unless we man up in forwards, we cannot win the arm-wrestle needed to rack up pressure. We are very suspect at the mo and even Wakefield, Broncos and Salford will fancy their chances of tearing us up. I hope and pray we can gel, quick, and give Cas a doing next weekend.

For the last three seasons we have had the board and coaching staff telling us we can take heart because; we won the second halfe or we did not loose by as much as we did in the first
The game is 80 minutes for gods sake
All that we can take from only loosing the second half by 2 is that a heavily depleted Catalan side which had already won the game by the 40th minute had by the 80th minute started to tire

Playing for 15 minutes a game will win nothing
If you can content yourself on the fact that we lost the second half by less than we lost the first then you are easily pleased
That type of attitude will guarantee only one thing that we will be as dire this year as we have been for the last 4
