Bradford Bulls 12 Catalan Dragons 34 The Bulls slipped to a humiliating opening-day defeat at the hands of Catalan Dragons at Odsal in this afternoon's Super League opener.
Mick Potter's new-look side found themselves 20-0 behind at the break after the defensive frailties which undermined them so often last season were again exposed.
They trailed inside the sixth minute when Dragons loose forward Jason Baitieri collected a pass from Setaimata Sa to cross the line from close range.
Scott Dureau, a pivotal figure at scrum-half for Catalan all afternoon, added the extras and continued to pull the strings.
The Bulls were dealt a blow when John Bateman picked up an injury as he contested a high ball and was helped off the field in the 17th minute.
Midway through the opening period, former Bulls hooker Ian Henderson produced a fine break down the middle and sent Clint Greenshields clear from 20 metres out.
It got worse for Bradford in the 30th minute when Thomas Bosc took a clever pass from Dureau to power clear and Dureau again added the extras.
The Bulls fashioned only one meaningful opening inside the first half but Jarrod Sammut failed to control the ball when just yards short of the line.
Dureau added a penalty on the stroke of half-time and three minutes after the restart Sa dummied his way past Ian Sibbit to cross in the right corner.
Dureau's conversion attempt rebounded off a post but in the 55th minute – after the Bulls had enjoyed a period of sustained pressure which they could not make pay – Catalan struck again.
Dureau chipped a delightful kick into the right corner and Daryl Millard touched down, and Dureau's conversion made it an afternoon to remember for ex-Bulls stars Henderson and Steve Menzies.
The Bulls replied in the 64th minute when Jamie Langley touched down in the right corner, which Luke Gale converted, but Sebastien Raguin crossed in the left corner for a sixth with four minutes remaining.
Elliot Kear plunged over in the last minute and Gale added his second goal but the game was long since finished as a serious contest.

What has happened to the once mighty Bulls, it seems there are problems both on and off the field .
A City of Bradford's size needs/should have successful sports clubs, so many Bradfordians look forward to the weekend, when the team of their choice takes to the field, hoping their team can put in a valiant effort which enables us mere mortals to go home buzzing and help us to face the rubbish times we endure throughout the week.
I live in hope that those halcyon days are just around the corner.

what was satisfying was the shape the bulls had (although it wasn't utilized). Gale had an unusually poor game, with the shape we had, if had had just got his head up and hit some obviously clear options the score could have been alot different.
Sammut- great buy, need to keep him, he was the only player that had cares about pride.

catalans had 4 wingers, 2 hookers, and leon pryce out. we were at home. so no excuses. its pathetic!!!
where is the passion, the motivation?
its a repeat cycle every single year and how idiots fall for the same false promises and rubbish spouted from our once great club is beyond me.

if potter survives the season i would be amazed.
poor poor coach who achieved at saints because of the quality he inherited.

Quite simply, we are a team of puny weaklings; weak in mind, body and spirit. A poster earlier in the thread quite rightly mentioned how lazy we were defending the ruck area and we were (did anyone else count how often we still had at least one defender laid on the floor after Catalans had already played the ball and carved 20m up the field). However, part of the reason for that is that Catalans must have won 98% of the tackles they went into today on defence and attack.

Our defensive system is just shocking and when we have players who don't want to go and take attackers on and would rather be passive and let the game come to them, it's no wonder we are laid all over the pitch leaving massive holes in the line for a good team to exploit, our system just invites attackers to knock us over and get through the gain line.

As for the tactics on attack, I'd love to know who thought it would be a good idea for us to take Cats on up front; on paper their pack was superior (injuries or not) and on the field the point was alarmingly highlighted and, yet, we still persist in playing the one up style and getting crushed everytime we hit the line.

The club is on it's arse and I could only think back to the days when we had a pack that could grunt and grind the opposition into submission and attackers who loved to run the ball hard and fast and play a bit of football. Unfortunately, a team that didn't even exist when we were at our peak came and gave us a lesson in how it's done and our weak a***d players were all too happy to let them.

Second half was only 12-14, an improvement on first half. Kear, Sammut and Gale (journeymen?) had good games. Problem was the forwards, Catalans have had a good pack for a few years. Defence awful. St Hilaire is clueless. I thought there were some positives: if Gale clicks with centres and wingers, we could have some decent strikepower. Purtell, Sammut and Kear looked promising. For the last three seasons we have had the board and coaching staff telling us we can take heart because; we won the second halfe or we did not loose by as much as we did in the first

All that we can take from only loosing the second half by 2 is that a heavily depleted Catalan side which had already won the game by the 40th minute had by the 80th minute started to tire

Second half was only 12-14, an improvement on first half. Kear, Sammut and Gale (journeymen?) had good games. Problem was the forwards, Catalans have had a good pack for a few years. Things will improve, it was only the first game and we did not have a full team out. As for boo boys why dont you lot get out there on the field, you will soon find your not the heroes that anybody on the field are!
For the last three seasons we have had the board and coaching staff telling us we can take heart because; we won the second halfe or we did not loose by as much as we did in the first

Playing for 15 minutes a game will win nothing
If you can content yourself on the fact that we lost the second half by less than we lost the first then you are easily pleased
That type of attitude will guarantee only one thing that we will be as dire this year as we have been for the last 4
