Bradford Bulls prop Nick Scruton confident of big improvement against Catalan Dragons

Nick Scruton has admitted the Bulls’ thumping defeat at Hull was a reality check but is confident they will be fully up to speed at home to Catalan Dragons this weekend.

Mick Potter’s men shipped nine tries during a chastening 46-6 defeat in Lee Radford’s testimonial at the KC Stadium on Sunday.

They were guilty of countless handling errors and, according to Scruton, lost the physical battle up front too.

The prop said: “I woke up on Monday morning and knew I’d been in a game.

“Their pack dominated us at times and showed us how to do it.

“Yes, it was a bit of a reality check.

You work hard all pre-season and rip into training and you think you’re flying. But you get a performance like that at Hull and it just shows where we are really

“You work hard all pre-season and rip into training and you think you’re flying. But you get a performance like that at Hull and it just shows where we are really.”

Nevertheless, Scruton is confident that his side can engineer a serious improvement in Sunday’s Super League opener.

He believes the Bulls can iron out those mistakes against Hull in training this week.

“We played Dewsbury the week previously but, no disrespect to them, we didn’t get a feel for where we are,” said Scruton.

“Dewsbury wasn’t such a physical game but Hull certainly was.

“Obviously it’s never good to lose like that but I’d prefer that in a pre-season friendly than have a little scrappy game where you don’t really get a feel for where you are.

“Now we know exactly what we need to work on and we’ll definitely be better for it this week against Catalan.

“We’ve trained hard so far this week and will continue to do so. I’m sure we can go and get that win. It’s going to be a tough season so we all need to dig in and show a bit of character.”

Last season, Scruton’s injury woes meant Bulls fans saw only patches of him at his marauding best.

An operation to repair ligament damage in his wrist forced him to miss the end of the season, and he also needed regular injections in his groin.

Having played against Dewsbury and Hull, Scruton said: “I’m just about fit now, although it was six months since I’d played a game before the Dewsbury friendly.

“I’m a yard off everything at the minute. I’m not where I want to be sharpness-wise but that match fitness will come.”

Scruton, meanwhile, admits he has been left hugely impressed by the impact of trialist Phil Joseph, who looks certain to be rewarded with a one-year deal.

Joseph has made his mark against Castleford, Dewsbury and Hull and Scruton said: “Phil has done a brilliant job for us.

“There is big competition now in the front row and that will keep us all on our toes.”

Weel nick injuries aside you certainly need a big year. Its about time we saw you smashing opposite props the way you smashed Joel Clinton at odsal and Broke some tackles.
.
I think Phil Joseph might have earned a deal more so with the Aussie prop being out for a few months. But I think we need to be more ambitious in signings.
.
Brett Seymour looked the bee's knees for hull last week how good would it have been had he signed with us. But I have trust in Luke Gale.
.
COME ON YOU BULLS....... Roll on Sunday. Hopefully we will have a decent atmosphere. Will be cold so wrap up peep n creeps.

Nick needs a massive improvement as he was very poor against hull, he has been poor the last 2 seasons with his constant wrist injuries. Step it up or he could lose his place to young Tom when manase is back.

He is not the only one that needs to hit top form this year. For various reasons we didn’t see the best from Ainscough, Walker, Langley, Donaldson, Diskin and a few more. We need luck with injuries and if everyone performs well then I see us having a reasonable season and getting into the top 8. We are still nowhere near the top 4 as we don’t have any really classy game winners yet but should be able to give the middle of the table teams a game if everyone stays fit. We won’t win anything this year but we should enjoy this season more than previous years. Then, we need to bring in a couple of “top quality” players each year for the next few years and then we may be challenging again. The next 6 games will show us where we are and whether our coaching staff have done their jobs. I can't wait till Sunday. Am getting fed up with watching those cheating, arguing footballers on TV. Bring on the "mans" game again!

Well Said Pricey, although I think Sky should have chosen a better game than Widnes v Wakefield to kick off the season. I imagine this one to be nothing more of a NL1 game

Here's my prediction for the season, like it or hate it.
1. Warrington
2. Saints
3. Wigan
4. Leeds
5. Catalan
6. Hull
7. Huddersfield
8. Bulls
9. Castleford
10. Hull KR
11. London
12. Salford
13. Widnes
14. Wakefield
The positions from 6 to 10 are fluid as are those from 12 to 14. For the Bulls to do well, injuries apart (but that goes for all sides), it is the younger players who need to develop and shine; I don't think the older ones have much more development in them but it would be nice to see them play to their potential consistently. So, sorry, no massive leap up the table but steady progress and, hopefully, no hammerings. But, ten games in, a realistic evaluation must be made. There are too many players and staff on above-average pay giving
below-average performances. Pride in the shirt boys and good luck.

All I can say every year the same old tripe coming from one of the players.Shut up and started talking on the pitch with results.

Agree 100% with your positions tricky. We could end up 10th but could also end up 5th with a bit of luck. That's what makes the new season interesting as long as we don't set our expectations too high.

Hope Nick Scruton can realise his potential this season,on form he can match most of the top props,so can Koppy maybe with a more construtive half back they will find more gaps than of late.At the same time the big lads must stand up and meet fire with fire,I'm sure they are capable of taking on the top props,Koppy certainley did in the Four Nations, the others must take inspiration from this.Regarding the top teams they all have one thing in common, money bags backers, which we dont have at this moment,so until that changes we must find and develop our own,as we have been doing for some time.Lets look for a big improvement all round this season, but also lets get behind the team and show our undoubted support.Keep the faith COYB.
