Bradford Bulls: Manase Manuokafoa to make his debut at Castleford

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: New signing Elliot Kear will miss Boxing Day's match as he recovers from a hernia New signing Elliot Kear will miss Boxing Day's match as he recovers from a hernia

Bulls fans will get their first glimpse of new recruit Manase Manuokafoa in the pre-season friendly at Castleford on Boxing Day.

The giant prop, signed from Parramatta Eels on a one-year deal, is named in the squad following his arrival at Odsal earlier this month.

Fellow forward Phil Joseph is also included as he looks to impress coach Mick Potter after being taken on trial.

The likes of Heath L’Estrange, Matt Diskin and Nick Scruton, working their way back to full fitness after long-term injury, are not involved.

Nor are France captain Olivier Elima (knee) and new signing Elliot Kear (hernia) as they bid to return to full fitness in time for the start of the season.

Luke Gale, Adrian Purtell and Jarrod Sammut, three of the six new faces at Odsal, will similarly play no part as Potter looks to mix and match his squad during pre-season.

Rookies John Bateman, Jobe Murphy, Alex Ball and Rob Hawthorne are in the squad to face Ian Millward’s men.

The derby encounter at Castleford is the first of several pre-season games for the Bulls before their Super League opener at home to Catalan Dragons on Sunday, February 5.

They will play Featherstone, Dewsbury, Hull and possibly Keighley in January, a schedule which Potter feels is arduous to say the least.

“For me it’s probably two games too many,” he said.

“The Cas game on Boxing Day is one where it probably has to be played and I’m sure people have become accustomed to it.

“It gives us a chance to try a couple of different combinations here and there and experiment a little bit before the other pre-season games the following month.”

Centre Keith Lulia, signed from Newcastle Knights, is scheduled to arrive in England on December 27.

Meanwhile, Castleford’s half-back Rangi Chase will not feature in the game as he has been given additional time off to recuperate following his exertions in the Gillette Four Nations.

Bulls squad to play Castleford: Sykes, Ainscough, Platt, Walker, Crookes, Briggs, Jeffries, Hargreaves, O’Brien, Joseph, Olbison, Sibbit, Langley, Manuokafoa, Ball, Addy, Donaldson, Bateman, Murphy, Hawthorne.

For me, it dosen't matter what squad is put out on Boxing day, it's a game of rugby. Even though a lot of 1st teamers aren't playing, it still isn't a bad squad and I am looking to see Manase playing and showing us what he can do. I expect a lot are are wanting him to shine straight away but he needs to be given a chance which I think he will take.
I would like to wish all fans a really merry Xmas and a good new year and hear's looking forward to a prosperous 2012 for the Bulls
Merry Xmas all !!!

Strong team. Let's hope it goes without injury! Nice to see Briggs given a shot to shine. A year on, he should be settled now and start calling the shots. Looking forward to seeing him with a full pre-season. Sounds like Potter isn't keen on all the friendlies tho...

Hi mate - not a bad squad at all, nice mixture. A chance for some players to put forward a case - Olby, Donno, Addy, Bateman - and the reports I get bout Phil Joesph are very positive so who knows there???

Merry Xmas and all that - and see you at Odsal.

Please don't shoot me down here, but why if MP thinks "it's two games too many" are they playing so many friendlies?

Good point, but in recent seasons they have looked under prepared at the start of the campaign.
I suspect MP means two games too many for first grade squad so it will give the kids a chance to show what they can do.

The four or five games will give MP chance to rotae his squad, bearing in mind we have a much larger squad this year than previous, and he will be able to give some of the young players a run out, and poss the chance that they could put a marker down.

And in the regular season as well! Extra game for some joke Magic weekend!!! See those guys in Oz? Play each other ONCE at home and ONCE away. They do not over play thier players. Our lads are half way goosed befor the end of the season. I would rather see competative games week in week out and drop these silly extra fixtures.
As for MP having chance to rotate his squad, he will have seen them all play against each other. Full contact games between the squad. Ok the aggresion may not be quite the same but patterns can be planned and played out.
As a couple of you have said already, it will be good to see the kids and, good to be out in the air watching a game. Had enough of trying to pretend I like kick and clap, God it's so slow!
