Odsal residents may get permits to end misery

People living near Odsal stadium could get a reprieve from rugby fans parking outside their homes on Bradford Bulls match days.

Plans have been drawn up to create four permit-only zones on match days covering hundreds of houses on the doorstep of the stadium.

Permits would be handed out to residents who would have to dislpay them on their own cars to avoid a parking fine.

The move is intended to end residents suffering problems from fans crowding their streets during games.

Councillor David Warburton (Lab, Wyke), who lives in one of the proposed zones, and is the Labour group’s spokesman for sport, said there had been continuous complaints for years from residents about the parking problems.

He said: “Councillor David Green and I had a meeting with officers to see if we could put something together and we have identified a number of streets that would benefit from a match-day parking zone.

“We don’t want to see the Bulls pushed out, but we do need to sort something out for the benefit of local residents.

“If a new sports village goes ahead in Odsal in whatever format, the situation could get worse. We are trying to encourage planners to include more parking in the scheme.”

The change in law which gave the Council responsibility for enforcing parking and new rules which allow the zone to be in place on match days only had made it possible for these plans to be put forward.

A survey of residents in the proposed zones will ask if they have had problems getting into their property or parking their cars because of rugby fans. And they will also be asked if they agree with the match-day parking zone – and a majority on any given street must agree to go ahead if it is to be included in any possible zone.

The survey and final proposals should be completed by September with the intention that any zone is in operation for the 2011 season.

Bulls media manager Stuart Duffy said of the plans: “We always encourage our supporters to park sensibly for the benefit of the community. We urge them to park at the many places available both at Odsal and Richard Dunn.”

Mr Duffy said that there were about 550 spaces at the stadium and 1,000 were made available at Richard Dunn sports centre on match days. Recent attendance figures show about 9,000 to 10,000 fans attend home fixtures at Odsal.

The matter will be discussed at the Bradford South Area Committee, which meets next Thursday at 5pm at Bradford City Hall.

.......How can they enforce a law like this, its a public road! The owners of the houses dont own the bit of road outside their house, also the richard dunn car park is not big enough for the extra cars!

"Councillor David Warburton (Lab, Wyke), who lives in one of the proposed zones"

That says it all.

What is the point of a survey when the outcome is already known ? Of course residents aren't going to vote against it.

Not a Bulls fan but if they go ahead like this then they need to provide a plan for alternative parking which is limited in that area.

If the residents don't like it then don't buy a house near a rugby ground !!

It's like residents of Yeadon complaining about aircraft noise !!

We used to park in the Dunn car park - until it went from £3 to £5 overnight (for a car park we probably already pay for in council tax).

Are we now saying that parking sensibly (legally) on a public (for which we pay another tax) will be outlawed?

I would sympathise will local people if the parking was illegal/dangerous. However, why the big fuss for only 12 lots of 2-3 hours every year?

I live next to a school and have people parking illegally and dangerously twice a day for the majority of the year and no-one will even contemplate putting yellow/double yellow lines to enforce normal law, let alone create zones.

Something not quite right somewhere.

They have stopped city fans from parking on a public road since the motor auctions set up on midland road
Odsal is no differant it is a public road residents should have access to there homes
put parking ticket on there cars like you do city fans
And then bradford council may provide proper parking spaces for both clubs
doubt it very much they dont want sporting clubs in bradfod

I parked on Cleckheaton Road last season and was hit with an £80 fixed penalty, reduced to £40 if it was paid in 14 days. another way of conning joe public... The car parking prices are a disgrace. Park at west bowling for less....

So there is a problem for maybe 3 hours 16 times a year, is there?

I can't park outside my house every time there is a service or otherwise something on at the church at the end of my road. That happens a **** sight more often than 16 times a year. Can I have a red zone too please? And IF I cannot, WHY THE HELL SHOULD ANYONE ELSE??

If this is introduced, it will either move the parking to further away - residents just outside the zones will be VERY pleased - or, more likely, drive more fans away.

If this vermin disgrace of a council wants to turn this failing city into a totally failed city, they sure know how to set about it.

The Bradford council never fails to amaze me with is utter stupidity and ineptitude . this will put off yet more fans , away supporters invariably drive to the games and this will effect them probably more than the home fans. As Pratfinder says, its 16 days a year for a few hours, the council clearly sees the bulls fan as a way to make a few extra quid. We pay car tax to allow us to drive on and park on public roads so why should we be forced to pay again for the privillage? Dont get me wrong if people are blocking access to a drive way for example they should be ticketed but who does that anyway!!

How about opening up the currently boarded up old police station site at Odsal top for a bit of extra parking ? I'm sure whoever owns it could earn a few quid whilst it is doing nothing.

Otherwise agree with all the other comments. This only happens less than 20 times a year and I can't believe it bothers the residents too much. Anyone caught obstructing should be quite rightly dealt with but the cons of this madness far outweigh the pros.
The council surely must have other priorities !!

Good using Richard Dunnes as then when amateurs have to train there in winter it is rutted and dangerous, Thanks Dunnies we have gone to Buttershaw school now

so didn't these residents realise that when they moved in there was a sports stadium on their doorstep and took this into consideration ? or is it just a case of the council trying to force the sporting clubs in the city to go the same way as most of the retailers ?

Simple solution is vote against Warburton at the next LOCAL election. He is obviously using this to canvass for votes. Next LOCAL election due in May I think.

Cllr David Robinson does not live anywhere near the ground. He lives near Westfield lane, Wyke!
I understand the concerns of the residents of Odsal but I also undertand the concerns of people living near the city center particularly near shearbridge where the bombay stores are for illegal and double parking and the same applies at the car auctions in midland Road. Now for consistency can we have the same enforcement there?
Thought not!
