McNamara to field strongest squad available for final warm-up game at Hull KR

Matt Orford is set to make his long-awaited Bradford debut as part of a full-strength side for tomorrow’s friendly at Hull KR (8pm).

The Bulls’ high-profile off-season acquisition starts at scrum half for the first time after missing out on his side’s previous pre-season trial games.

A trip to Leeds Rhinos on January 17 came just too early for ‘the Ox’, who had only arrived in the country two weeks previously, while head coach Steve McNamara opted to go with a youthful side at Dewsbury on Friday. But now, with the start of Super League only nine days away, the 31-year-old Aussie is ready to make his bow.

“It’s the strongest group that we’ve got at this moment in time,” said McNamara of his selection.

“Certainly we’ve been able to get a good look at all our seniors and all our juniors over the three games.

“Now we’re looking to narrow that group down and go with the strongest squad we believe we have available and do some serious prep for round one.

“Obviously the interchange will be important this week because we want to run as close to a game as we can. We’re not going to be making 20 or 25 interchanges this week.

“I know we’re carrying a few extra players there but we’ll see how the game pans out.”

Danny Sculthorpe (back) and Michael Platt (knee) are the only first-team squad members ruled out, with both set to be sidelined for around three weeks.

But McNamara was quick to stress that players excluded from the 19-man squad can still stake their claim in training for a spot in the Super League opener at Huddersfield on February 5.

He found it particularly tough to leave out 18-year-old back-rower Tom Olbison after he impressed in the 24-24 draw at Dewsbury.

McNamara said: “We’ve named 19 for the weekend but I think Tom was particularly good last week and looks like he’s ready to push on.

“We’ve got to get through this game and see how we do. Hopefully we don’t pick anything up in this game and we’ll be able to select from a reasonably healthy squad the week after.”

Bulls team to face Hull KR: Dave Halley; Rikki Sheriffe, Paul Sykes, Chris Nero, Stuart Reardon; Brett Kearney, Matt Orford; Andy Lynch, Heath L’Estrange, Nick Scruton, Glenn Hall, Jamie Langley, Steve Menzies. Replacements: Craig Kopczak, Wayne Godwin, James Donaldson, Elliott Whitehead, Mike Worrincy, Jason Crookes.

Glad to see he is going with pretty much the strongest squad. I would have prefered to see the new halves have more than 1 trial game playing together prior to the season starting next week but i guess it has had to be this way due to time restraints, They will be professional enough to learn from each other quickly though. Lets just hope that we dont pick up any injuries !

Hi Steampig, I'm sure they would have had another game paired together had it not been for the weather. The Ox must have been seriously affected, leaving 35 deg and arriving in -5deg and seeing snow like he's probably never seen in his life. It's a big ask for him to hit the ground running in these circumstances so lets all give him a reasonable time to settle in. As you say they should soon learn about each other and have had some time together already (though not game time).

I don't think many would argue with that choice either?. The only question mark would be will he get enough time on the field this season as he did last?

Nope. It didn't have to be the captain who went to the launch, hence Hudds sending Brad Drew and Wakefield sending Damien Blanch.

Captains were preferred but clubs were actually just asked to send a player representative.

Anyway, in regards to team selection, I'd expect that to be the starting 13 for the Huddersfield game next week. Again bench probably being Godwin, Donaldson, Kopczak & Worrincy.
My only concern is depth. Even if you factor in Platt & Sculthorpe (Scully probably replacing Worrincy on return!) that's 19, possibly 20 with any kind of Super League experience. Compared to the depth of Leeds & Warrington in particular...with Bridge, Atkins & King all able to play centre, King, Riley & Hicks can play wing...our backs division looks very light indeed.

for those, wanting to know re platt, scully read the following,ORFORD SET FOR BULLS BOW

Bradford scrum half Matt Orford will make his eagerly-anticipated first appearance for the club in tomorrow's friendly at Hull KR.

Orford, whose arrival co-incided with that of the worst of an English winter, will partner fellow Australian Brett Kearney at half-back in a strong-looking Bulls side.

Prop Danny Sculthorpe and centre Michael Platt are the only senior players ruled out and both are set to miss the first month of the new Super League season.

Platt will have his leg brace removed early next week as he continues his recovery from a knee injury picked up in training, while new signing Sculthorpe is still struggling with a back problem.

Brad Drew and Damien Blanch are both currently injured so thats why they were sent from thier respective clubs??? Menzies insnt injured. i think he would be a good appointment.

Still think ox will be captain. He's going to have to run the ship this time, and i hope all players and spectators get behind whoever is chosen. It's going to be a hard job being captain this time,we can't expect to go through the season injury free, this means the youngsters are going to be called upon, and they will need all the encouragement they can get.
this season will proberbly be a time for blooding the yougsters(at least 4 or 5) then next year should see a vast improvement.
that does'nt mean bulls can't win anything this term, if they do it will be a bonus.

quite agree, this season must see improvement on last. but you can't expect to go from failing to make the play-offs to S/L champions in one jump.
6 new players in and young lads to blood into first team,i'm afraid your going to have to be patient.
think bulls will finish top 4 this time but we may have to wait to see the return of the glory years.

After taking a parting shot at former boss John Kear, Danny Sculthorpe says he just wants to settle down and enjoy his rugby Danny Sculthorpe hasn't featured in pre-season due to a back injury
