Jeffries: Deal me in for 2010

On-song Ben Jeffries hopes producing his best Bulls football yet will earn him a new Odsal contract.

The Aussie playmaker’s current deal is up at the end of the campaign but he has been outstanding of late and is sure to be high on coach Steve McNamara’s agenda.

Jeffries bossed victories over St Helens and Wakefield to demonstrate his true worth to the side and admits: “I’m happy with how I’m playing. There’s been a couple of mistakes but hopefully I can keep it up for the next few weeks and on until the end of the season.

“I think it probably is my best spell since I joined.

I’ve not heard anything from Bradford yet but I’m not going to wait around too long. I like to have decisions made sooner rather than later

Ben Jeffries

“I’ve not heard anything from Bradford yet but I’m not going to wait around too long.

“I like to have decisions made sooner rather than later.

“I’ve told Macca I want to stay though and my manager is on to it.

“The ball is in their court but hopefully it will get rolling now.”

Only Harlequins No 7 Danny Orr has more try assists than Jeffries in the entire Super League competition.

The elusive stand-off has created a dozen scores for his team-mates, including touchdowns for Paul Sykes and Mike Worrincy in Saturday’s impressive win over Wakefield.

He found the killer pass both times and has been attacking the line with added pace in recent weeks.

Having filled in for Paul Deacon at scrum half, Jeffries has reverted back to stand-off for the last two games and it is no coincidence his side have proved more potent and dynamic.

“I do prefer being second receiver,” he admitted. “I like being a bit wider with a bit more time to play. Then, the more I take the line on, the more chance I have of bursting through or putting someone else through a gap.

“You put the defensive line in two minds as opposed to when you just stand and deliver, which is what can happen at first receiver.

“It’s important you have one half-back controlling and the other as a ball player or running.”

Jeffries – who is aiming to have his quota status relaxed to aid his bid to stay – continued: “Ball players always want their blokes to hit holes and run good lines.

“We’ve got plenty who do that at Bradford but Sykesy and Mick Worrincy in particular are very good at it and it’s paying off.”

Those wins have seen the Bulls edge up to tenth and revitalise their campaign.

Jeffries, 28, was pivotal against his former club and he added: “I’m not being arrogant but I don’t think Wakey were ever going to beat us. We were very focused and it was really important for us to back up after Saints.

“All the boys have been very determined to put things right since that embarrassment against Warrington when we were booed off the field.”

Annoyingly, after their Challenge Cup disaster against Catalans, they now have no fixture this weekend.

“I’m still peeved about France but there’s nothing we can do about it now,” said Jeffries. “We can have a rest and it’s important to get away from rugby and freshen up mentally so we come back in on Monday ready to go again.”

Very classy Jeffries. The man comes into a bit of sustained form for the first time in his career with the Bulls and he uses that as a threat to the club over a new contract.

Maybe if he had played at this level during the two previous seasons he would have already had the extension.

As i understand it, players and clubs cannot start talking to each other about a move until 1 July. I'm not naive enough to think that they don't talk before that and i understand that Jeffries will want security but do your talking to the club, don't issue what are effectively come and get me pleas in the press.

Have some class, keep your head down, keep up the form and the contract will take care of itself.

Jeffries won't go down as even in the top 500 players ever to have played for this club and comments like this don't endear him any further.

He needs to play consistently well for the next 4 months to warrant a new contract also to attract reasonable offers from other Clubs. The ball is in your court BJ don't drop it!

A quality player and IMO better than Greg Bird was in the CC game a couple of weeks back and we need some stability in the halves. Having said that, I can't see anything but a clear out at the end of the year.

Sol, Newton, Lynch, Menzies, Morrison, Halley, Jeffries, Tadulala to name but a few and I can't see them all getting the chance to stay.

I’ve not heard anything from Bradford yet but I’m not going to wait around too long. I like to have decisions made sooner rather than laterthere are a few coming off contract this year! We need to keep some of them, or else we are going to be in another re-building season next year, we need some stability with the squad, players need to know where they are going to be next year, and i guess you would play better if you know you are wanted at the club.though there is an argument for playing well to get in the shop window too. sort the contracts out soon or we could loose one or two good players again this year.

Well I'd wanna keep at least half. Lynch, Menzies, Halley, Jeffries...maybe morrison or Tad.

What we also need is a more stable squad with fewer turnrounds like the last 3 seasons. It doesn't help the team when you have a third to half changing every season. The Bulls need to get back to the days when you change maybe 2 or 3 players in the main squad. Stains and Whinos are the 2 Clubs that have done that in recent times and been more successful because of it.

I don't see wholescale changes as a way forward. I could see Menzies and Morrison given another term. Menzies is amazing. He has the biggest heart of any player, it almost makes you feel sorry for him as he is still giving it everything at the end of every game even though it is obvious his old body is completely knackerd!, after 80 mins. He would be useful again next term especially if he could be spelled in the games.Morrison has had cruel luck but could be useful another term whilst Worrincy and Cook etc., are developing.

As for Jefferies. There must be better options to sign. At his best he is a good player but never great. The biggest problem is there are no really good halves out there. I wouldn't take any threats from Jefferies though. I mean who is going to want to steal him away?? Dream on!

As many of you have said we have to keep most of our players, in the last few years we have gone from the best to almost a mid table team!! I agree Sol and halley(sorry all you halley fans but his defence is so bad)can leave but the others we must keep to go forward. We need a new young hooker who can learn from Newton, he should resign until the end of 2010 season. Move jeffries to scum half, lose deacon sadly and get in an awesome stand-off, who the team can play around, hopefully he could kick aswell as sykes is usless at tht haha!!

With you Haitch, we need Lynch, Morro, Beaver and Semi to stay on and then develop the likes of Worrincey and Cook.

Not sure about BJ, he is a decent player but has not been consistent enough for me although if he maintains it for rest of seaon who knows? I reckon Deacs will have to hang up his boots at end of season or do like Harris and drop down to NL1 to continue his career.

We need something special in halves for next season, younger lads with fire in belly and all round ability.

Sol I imagine will definately be going so we have his salary to work with and I for one would keep Rinaldi for next season as Tez has picked up hugely since he arrived, would pick Rinaldi before Wagga.

I am sure (well I hope!) Macca and his troops have got their fingers in a few pies already for players to come in for 2010 so we best watch this space....

COYB!!!

Sign-up Terry Newton, he is quality at the moment.

Craig, you're spot on with the comments about Jeffries.

Watching the last couple of games, theres not a lot wrong with the side. It's all about attitude and confidence. They played some really entertaining stuff at Saints and Magic.
The areas Bulls can strengthen have not changed a lot since the opening game of the season.
Halfback and Centre are still the areas. A star Fullback would be a real boost and maybe Halley could be retained as cover for F/B and Wing.

You think Michael Pratt is a star though.

One of the problems at Odsal is that too few of our younger starlets are being given a chance to consolidate themselves in the first team. We have an aging squad and supplement that buy buying ageing journeymen. Thus, at the end of each of the last few seasons, large numbers of players have left, the new squad spend half a season "gelling" and the subsequent results prove academic. The cycle must be broken. With no relegation and the season, in terms of silverware, as good as over, now is the time to effect the change. The game againt the Crusaders is an obvious opportunity as the opposition is National League One standard at best. Otherwise, the club will find itself in a perpetual cycle of mdiocrity and obscurity.

Ageing Squad? we have a blend of youth and experience akin to Saints, who incidently also have an ageing squad.. As for youth. Cook Koppy Halley Crookes Worrincy Sherrife, Etc. Even Burgess, all young players who are still learning. There is a limit as to how many rookies you can play at any one time. Other kids are included in the squad and will be fed in as and when.

I agree your point about stability i.e. gelling but I do think Macca is performing rather well regarding youngsters. Worrincy and Sherrife were of course draughted in from elsewhere but are youngsters just the same. Our home-grown kids are still hovering around the 16-18 years so are a bit young to be serious contenders IMO.But as they mature, rest assured Macca will give them their chance.

See donny are having to let Kyle Briggs go for financial reasons, he is a quality half back with huge potential, well worth getting IMO.

Hi Gumshoe, I reckon thats the only way to go at present as no real class available. I see Giants are rumoured to be taking Brough for £100,000.
Personally I would hate Bulls to get involved in such a deal. I'm not sure how good Brough is. certainly no world beater?.
