STEVE Crossley is bracing himself for a video nasty today after accusing the Bulls of going “soft”.

The experienced forward is ready to be subjected to a re-run of Sunday’s first defeat of the season against Workington as John Kear analyses where his team went wrong.

Crossley had no complaints with the 17-16 verdict at Derwent Park which ended the perfect start to the League One campaign.

And he believes a session squirming in front of the video screen is needed to remind the players what can happen when standards drop.

Crossley said: “It’s going to be a good kick up the backside. We need to go through that pain of watching it again and seeing where we’ve gone wrong.

“This is a tough league. We can’t just think we are going to breeze through it.

“I played in here last year with Toronto. We had a Super League-quality side then and we still lost and drew games.

“It’s not the end of the season (losing one game) but we should be ashamed and disappointed. There’s still a long way to go but we really need to learn our lessons.

“We need a big week and need to get back on track against Coventry before heading into the Challenge Cup the week after.”

A late drop goal condemned the Bulls to their opening loss in their fourth game in a fortnight. But Crossley did not blame the poor performance on tiredness.

“John has given us plenty of rest to be able to recover from those games and he’s rotated a bit of the side,” he added.

“I don’t think we can take fatigue into that or the travel either.

“There are no excuses. We just weren’t at it.

“We knew Workington were going to be a tough bunch and have got a bit of Super League experience.

“We’ve certainly got the team to handle them but they absolutely schooled us. We were really soft.”

The Bulls had led 16-10 going into the closing stages but Crossley was not surprised to see the home side respond to nick it at the end.

“We were hanging on for dear life,” he said. “We were just playing more dumb (rugby) and you could see it coming from the sideline what was going to happen.

“I think it was a fair result. It wasn’t good enough and we need to fix it.

“Let that be a lesson to us for the rest of the season.

“We can’t expect to go unbeaten through the year and just finish teams off.”
