ANDREW CHALMERS COLUMN: AS you plough into the Easter treats this holiday weekend, please take a deep breath and remember promotion from League One is our key priority this year and that means banking all the points available.

Going unbeaten is a ridiculous goal – and I cringe when it gets suggested. Our journey to redemption is a marathon, and not a sprint.

Our preferred goal is to ask our legion of fans to support us on our journey around League One venues and of course at home. Let’s set attendance records and new away fan benchmarks – that I’m sure will help motivate the players – rather than focus on unbeaten runs.

Sure we are sitting equal top with Doncaster, a side who like York have made a sizeable investment in players, but two things are worth noting.

Firstly all League One sides are enjoying solid assistance from Super League clubs as they feverishly make players available (via dual registration and player loans) to teams, especially any team playing Bradford!

Secondly if we take some of the established clubs like Oldham lightly, they will simply knock us over and teach us a basic rugby league rule. The team that holds the ball makes the rules.

Both John and I felt some in our team lacked respect, predominantly in the opening half against Hunslet last week. Sure we won the game comfortably as the Bulls slowly ground out dominance in the middle but we need to be more patient and clinical in attempting to bank the two points on offer. If we cough up cheap possession to any team, we simply help to keep them in the game.

Don’t be under any illusions: Oldham will be our toughest outing so far this year. The Scott Naylor-trained team are well drilled and will present with great support from the Oldham fans.

We need to drown their support out in the terraces and their performance on the field. Having watched them narrowly lose to York, and then beat Halifax in emphatic style, we know what their coach is capable of extracting from their team.

Expect an extremely physical contest. Hopefully we have a fast game at the ruck, to allow a decent high energy event. Undoubtedly this will be a tight percentage style arm wrestle from kick-off tonight at 6pm.

And you won’t need any excuses to sneak out on Monday afternoon either as part two of our Easter extravaganza takes hold. By Monday you’ll be ready to grab the kids and some tickets to watch the rescheduled Round Four Challenge Cup clash with Hunslet, which kicks off on Monday (2pm) at South Leeds Stadium.

Unlike last year, the coaching staff feel we are in a strong position in having a balanced, competitive squad right across the board, so we are expecting to draw on all those troops for this double header.

The reserve competition has been an enormous plus for us, as our fringe players have been kept battle ready for the upcoming clashes.

I’m sure Hunslet thought we were very beatable last week and will have a renewed enthusiasm to pop our balloon as we both arm wrestle towards a mouth-watering reward against Warrington in a few weeks. Don’t expect Hunslet to be handing out a free easter egg and a pass to the Halliwell Jones Stadium. They’ll be plotting and scheming their own revenge. Let’s drown them all out.

For the faithful, enjoy the Easter treats and a weekend of rugby league.

Come and join the Easter Stampede.
