DALTON Grant has trained his sights on finishing as League One’s most lethal marksman.

Fresh from helping himself to last week’s treble against Hunslet, the Welsh flyer would love to top the try-scoring pile in the division.

Promotion with the Bulls is the priority this year – but he also has a personal target to aim for to show beyond doubt that his injury woes are well in the past.

John Kear was pretty scathing in his reaction to the general performance in the Hunslet win. But Grant’s own efforts as he continues to bounce back from last season’s write-off have earned a nod from the coach.

Kear said: “Dalton had a really serious injury last year. It was going to be a gradual process but I think you can see he’s getting better each game.

“I thought he was very good at Keighley and he was an individual on Sunday who could look back and think he did okay. He’s progressing well.”

Grant believes he can use his new start at the Bulls to showcase his talents again.

“For me, it’s a massive confidence boost,” said the winger. “Coming back from my two Achilles injuries, going to the World Cup and then John believing in me.

“I’ve come back and needed to prove to everyone what I am capable of.

“Hopefully I can get another hat-trick and keep scoring the tries.

“I want to get top try scorer if I can but if not, we just go for promotion and get back in the Championship.”

Grant clearly has a close bond with his international and club coach – even when Kear laid into his players after their underwhelming performance on Sunday.

A stirring response is expected back at Odsal tonight against an Oldham side tipped to be up there challenging with the Bulls.

Grant added: “John turns every negative into a positive. He makes you feel good even if you don’t do as well as you should.

“It was good to get my first hat-trick for the club. But it wasn’t the performance we wanted and John wasn’t happy.

“It was a bit scrappy and we played into their hands. It was a lesson to learn that we’ve got to respect every team we play.

“We’ve got to work on that and take it into the Oldham game. We need to play each week like it’s a Test match.

“Scoring three tries doesn’t make a difference if you’re in a team that didn’t play well.

“We need to get that mentality of taking it set by set, instead of trying to score with each play.

“It’s a wake-up call. John gave us a rollicking in the changing room but it’s lucky it’s happened early in the season.

“Oldham is a big game and the boys will be focused.”

After the weather disruption of the last month, the players now have to handle the short turnaround in between games. The Bulls are in action again on Monday for the rearranged Challenge Cup trip to Hunslet.

Grant said: “John’s looking after the boys with a bit of rehab and recovery.

“Sometimes it is hard, these games are tough and it takes a lot on the body. It takes a couple of days to recover.

“But that’s what the staff do well here in getting everyone right.”
