BULLS have added Leeds Rhinos scrum half Cory Aston to their survival fight.

The 22-year-old has joined Geoff Toovey’s squad on a month’s loan, which covers the remaining three games of the regular Championship season.

Aston, son of Sheffield coach Mark, left the Eagles for Leeds in a two-year deal during the off-season but is yet to appear in the Super League.

He has made a dozen appearances on loan for Featherstone, including their 44-18 win over the Bulls on Easter Monday, although has not featured since their Challenge Cup loss to his parent club last month.

With Jordan Lilley back in the Rhinos’ plans, Aston will be thrust straight into his debut at home to leaders Hull KR on Sunday.

Toovey, who will also include new Aussie forward Damian Sironen, said: “I haven’t seen too much of either of them but I know Aston has got a good organisational game.

“He’s a steady player and did a good job playing against us this year. His kicking game is quite complete so we’re hoping he can guide us round the park.

“We were missing Lilley last week and hopefully he’ll fill that role.”

Toovey is not confident about seeing Lilley again after the youngster’s shining display in Leeds’ win over St Helens a week ago.

“I watched his game last week and he controlled the flow of things quite well. I thought his kicking game was outstanding.

“He’ll only get better with more experience and maturity. We enjoyed having him here at Bradford.

“Maybe he’ll make a return. I hope he doesn’t but then again it would be good for us if he does at some stage.”

Meanwhile, Toovey has played down suggestions that the RFL’s decision to take possible Championship restructure plans out of the hands of the clubs could work in the Bulls’ favour.

A meeting between the second-tier clubs is understood to have taken place earlier this week. But potential changes to the existing division were not on the agenda.

Toovey said: “All I’m concerned about is getting the best football side out on the field and winning as many games as possible.

“That’s all we can do to control our future at this stage.”
