HUDDERSFIELD are continuing to monitor the health of Lee Gaskell after his heart scare but coach Rick Stone has not ruled him out of playing tomorrow.

The 26-year-old former Bulls player pulled out of last Friday's Super League match against Hull during the warm-up after complaining of feeling unwell and mystery still surrounds the nature of his illness.

"We're not quite sure to be honest," Stone said at his weekly press conference. "It might be a mix of maybe a heart murmur and a little bit of anxiety.

"He's had some sad news with a death in the family recently – he went to the funeral yesterday – which might have had an influence on what's been going on.

"He's had some blood tests and he had an ECG with us a week or two before the season started and that came back clear. We're just working through a procedure with our doctor Danny Glover.

"Danny's checked him out and he's pretty comfortable that he can train at this point in time. He's going to train as normal and we'll find out a bit more about him.

"We probably need to get through and assess where he's at and make a decision ahead of our next training run."

Since the death of Keighley Cougars' Danny Jones from undiagnosed heart problems in 2015, there has been heightened awareness of the issue and Stone insists he would never take risks with a player's health.

"You've got to go through the process," he said. "You can jump in shadows too.

"We would never put Lee in a position where he wasn't comfortable. His welfare and safety is paramount. We're positive that we're not going to jeopardise that situation.

"If he continued to show signs that he's not quite right, we'd probably send him to see a specialist in London."

The late withdrawal of Gaskell meant the Giants were down to their last man standing for the Hull match, which they lost 48-8 – but Stone has no plans to dip into the transfer market.

Second rower Ukuma Ta'ai back will be back from suspension for the visit to the Leigh Sports Village and Stones is checking on the fitness of injured threequarters Jermaine McGillvary, captain Leroy Cudjoe and Aaron Murphy and forward Dale Ferguson.
