PHIL Joseph's arrival could be the best bit of business that Bradford do during the winter – and he could even line up at hooker.

That is the view of Wales boss John Kear as Joseph prepares to return to Odsal after four seasons away at Widnes and Salford.

Wales vice-captain Joseph is set to represent his country when they take on Serbia at Llanelli in their opening 2017 World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Kear said: "Going back to the Bulls is a great challenge for Phil but also a great signing for Bradford. He will add physicality to that Bradford pack and his on-field exploits are well known.

"But the thing that people at Odsal perhaps won't know about yet is his off-field leadership, which is first-class. He's got a steely determination to win and he will certainly help those younger lads in the squad.

"He will add so much on the field but I think he will bring even more off it. I think Phil Joseph is the best signing that Bradford have made in this off-season."

Joseph is seen ostensibly as a prop but Kear believes the 31-year-old is adept at playing in almost every position in the pack.

"He can play prop or hooker but I play him at loose forward for Wales and he's very comfortable there," explained Kear.

"I think he could also play as an edge player but he's certainly very good as a rotation hooker.

"We've used Phil there as well with Wales and it means you don't necessarily have to have a hooker on the bench.

"Having Phil in there gives you flexibility in your selection and that's great as a head coach."
