ROHAN Smith hailed the best performance of his reign as the Bulls destroyed Sheffield 80-0 in the final round of the Championship Shield.

Smith’s men annihilated the crisis-torn Eagles, who are battling to stave off administration and possible liquidation, in a 15-try rout.

Kieren Moss scored four and home debutant Ross Oakes bagged a hat-trick while Adam Sidlow marked his 100th Bulls appearance with a try which he converted.

Head coach Smith, whose side host Dewsbury in the semi-final of the Shield on Sunday, said: “It was certainly the most thorough and physical team performance since I came here.

“Everyone contributed to it and aimed up physically, so it was a tough gig trying to pick a man of the match.

“We saw a lot of skill on the back of that but you've got to win that physical battle first and we did that.

“These guys are passionate and they love playing. It was great to see them enjoying the physical part of the game and scoring tries too.”

The result came seven days after a dismal defeat at relegated Workington and Smith added: “It's important when you play really well or badly that you take something out of it and learn from it.

“We certainly responded well throughout the week to last weekend's disappointment.

“Sheffield stuck their bodies on the line and came to play, but we more than matched them.”

Moss took centre stage from full back and Smith said: “He's a very unselfish guy and a total team character.

“He would happily not score any tries if it meant the team getting the right result, but he can't help scoring a few with the positions he puts himself into.

“When Kris Welham went through in the first half, he actually waited for Mossy to catch him up to finish the job off.”

Oakes replaced Danny Williams in the 49th minute on the right wing and helped himself to three tries in nine minutes.

Smith reasoned: “It might be a good learning curve for Ross to think about being a winger or a centre to help force his way into the team on a more regular basis next year.

“That was a tough performance from Danny Williams and Ross got the cream on top of that.”

Smith said talks with Tom Olbison, who scored a superb first-half try, over a new deal were still ongoing.

Williams (back) and Lewis Charnock (dead leg) will be assessed after being replaced yesterday as the Bulls look to defeat Dewsbury and reach the Shield.

Smith said: “Dewsbury felt a little hard done by when they beat them there recently.

“They will back themselves and be physical but we love playing here and will look forward to it.”
