BULLS coach Rohan Smith has complete belief in his new side’s ability to make the Championship’s top four.

Even when they went behind 22-18 at bottom side Workington Town yesterday, Smith said he felt confident his team would turn it around.

After eventually coming away with a 29-22 win thanks to Lewis Charnock's late debut try, he said: “Workington gave us a battle but we came through it well and I thought we played with skill and with discipline.

"Certainly our discipline was much improved from the last game against Dewsbury, and so too was our attacking.

“Our target is to make the top four and nothing I have seen so far has shaken my belief that we can be there.

“I have watched a few Championship games now and they are all competitive matches. This was no different and I’m sure there will be a few more tests coming up which will be similar.”

The Bull play their catch-up game on Wednesday against Oldham – a team who are battling to move away from relegation trouble.

“We will assess the players tomorrow after they’ve had a day off. I’m not looking at the fact that we have three games in a week, only that we play on Wednesday.

“There are players who can come in for the midweek game and I am still looking at players after four games in charge,” said Smith.

Workington Town coach Phil Veivers felt that referee Andy Sweet had not helped his side with some of his decisions, particularly late in the game.

“I thought we went head to toe with a full-time team which has strong Super League ambitions and gave it a very good go," he said.

"We were unlucky not get something from the game after getting ourselves into a winning position, and I told the referee at the end that he had done for us again."

Town star Jarrod Sammut, a former Bulls player, scored two tries and was instrumental in pulling his side back into the game.

Bull coach Smith added: “I’ve tracked Jarrod throughout his career and know what he’s capable of. He did cause us a couple of problems but in general terms I thought we dealt with him well.

“Workington have some strong forwards who put in a lot of good tackles but we are looking for our guys to enjoy winning the arm wrestle games thrown up and I think they are doing that.”
