ROHAN Smith reckons the arrival of new Bulls recruit Kieren Moss can bring out the best in James Clare.

Aussie Moss looked lively yesterday in his first intensive work-out on the training ground since signing from Parramatta and is in contention to make his debut at Workington on Sunday.

And Smith revealed how motivated Clare has been by the added competition.

The outside back signed a two-year contract extension earlier this week and his coach has been impressed by his attitude.

Smith said: “We were certainly very keen to keep him around for the next few years.

“He’s got great versatility so he’s still a really valuable member. But when the opportunity to get Kieren came up, I needed to pursue that.

“He’s a really motivated and impressive young dude.

“When there began to be a bit of speculation, I told James that it was likely to happen and Kieren would be coming in.

“The first thing James said to me was ‘I welcome competition.’

“James is an absolutely fantastic character in every way so far from my dealings with him. There was no issue at all there.”

Moss only flew into England last weekend and was introduced to the Bulls fans at half-time during the Odsal loss to Dewsbury.

But he has settled into the squad and is already learning the local mannerisms.

Smith added: “Kieren is fit and healthy and he’s got among the group quite quickly. They’ve taken to him.

“The fact that he’s here on a British passport helps. His father’s British and he’s always wanted to explore that side of his upbringing.

“Although he’s an Aussie, there’s already a bit of banter among the Yorkshire and Lancashire lads. He’s picked up a bit of slang and a few sayings.”

Smith will wait before deciding whether to throw Moss straight in at Derwent Park against the Championship bottom side. The Bulls play again three days later with their rearranged away clash with Oldham.

“Kieren will be considered but we’ll see how he goes.

“He’s been fit to play back in the New South Wales Cup but he hasn’t played recently.

“Obviously the trip over here takes a fair bit out of you.

“He got over here on Sunday morning so he’s had a couple of days’ training. He got among the boys yesterday and they got to see what he’s got up his sleeve a little bit.

“It was good for him and also good for the players to see a fresh set of legs around the place.”
