ROHAN Smith is fast closing in on his first signing since taking the reins as Bulls head coach.

The Australian will take charge of his first home game on Sunday when Dewsbury Rams visit Odsal.

And his efforts to bolster the squad are set to bear fruit with Parramatta full back Kieren Moss, who can play in the halves, being heavily linked to Bradford in the Australian media.

The 22-year-old is believed to hold a British passport and, with Clint Gutherson emerging as the Eels’ first choice full back, Moss could be set for a move to England with the Bulls.

Smith worked with Moss at Penrith and while, the Bulls boss would not be drawn on specific targets, he said he was hopeful of a new recruit arriving imminently.

Smith said: “There is plenty of potential out there and we are hopefully very close to adding to the squad.”

One man who will not be joining Bradford is St Helens half-back Travis Burns, who yesterday headed to Leigh on loan for the rest of the season.

It was the second playmaker that Leigh have signed in recent weeks following the arrival of fellow Aussie Josh Drinkwater.

Smith believes north-west-based Burns moved to Leigh essentially for geographical reasons.

“He’s a player who if he had been available we would have been interested in,” said Smith.

“But he’s decided to stay close to home, I guess.”

The Bulls will again be without a handful of key players through injury this weekend with Lee Gaskell, Adrian Purtell, Paul Clough, Ben Kavanagh and Rhys Lovegrove all set to remain absent.

Richie Mathers seems certain to continue in the halves alongside Oscar Thomas but Smith wants to see greater potency from his side’s attack.

He added: “Our halves are a bit of a work-in-progress.

“There are lots of games to go in the season and we’re not going to make anything too long-term at this point, but we’ll let those guys build their combinations a little bit.

“Richie is a valuable member of the squad, so it was about trying to find an opportunity to get him into the team.

“I thought a lot of the aspects of his game were very good last week.

“He competed hard, he had a calming influence in the group and when he got his running game going we got the benefits with a penalty and some momentum on the back of that.

“We are asking Richie to do what he’s good at, which is competing, and then secondly to guide his team with his creativity on the back of that.

“As a group we had a good chat this morning about preparing at a high level and having that edge about us to compete hard every week.

“We then went out on the training field and had some good purpose about us and worked hard on our execution, which hasn’t been great so far since I’ve been here. But the attitude and the intent has to come first.”

Meanwhile, Danny Addy has charged with the Grade B offence of making Deliberate Contact with a Match Official during last week’s defeat against Leigh.

The Early Guilty Plea is available is the homegrown back-rower.

Matt Diskin's Under-19s side claimed a highly impressive 28-26 win at Widnes last night, pushing them into the top eight for the first time this season at the expense of Huddersfield.
