JAMES Mendeika faces his old club Featherstone tomorrow night insisting he definitely made the right move in joining the Bulls.

The utility back arrived at Odsal from part-time promotion rivals Rovers last month and has since become a regular in Jimmy Lowes’ side.

The switch to Bradford allowed the 23-year-old to return to the full-time ranks and become reunited with Lowes following their time together at Warrington.

Mendeika joined Featherstone ahead of the 2014 campaign but struggled for game-time under Featherstone coach Andy Hay this season.

The Ireland international said: “It was definitely the right move for me because it got me back into a full-time environment which is something I always wanted.

“I had a really good first year at Featherstone last season. It ended with an injury but I scored quite a lot of tries in quite a lot of games.

“My form was very good and that was where I first got the chance to have a run at full back.”

On not being picked by Hay this season, Mendeika reasoned: “It was his call at the end of the day.

“I had been working my way back from an injury and had been fully fit for a few weeks.

“I had got one or two games but it wasn’t enough and when the opportunity came up to join Bradford I took it straight away.

“I’ve worked my socks off since I got here and will keep doing so.

“I’ve got a few good mates there such as Jamie Cording and Jack Ormondroyd and hopefully I can give some of them a whack on Wednesday night.”

With Jake Mullaney still troubled by injury and Ryan Shaw having been shunted out to the wing, Mendeika is aiming to continue at full back tomorrow night.

He added: “Obviously I can’t pick the team for Jimmy because he’s the coach and he chooses who are the best players to play in that position every week.

“I’m going out there every game to try and get into his starting 13 and, if I can’t do that, then I definitely want to be in the 17.

“But I’m loving it at full back with the responsibility and freedom you have got there.

“We’re doing really well with regards to picking up the wins, although we’re not always producing full 80-minute performances.

“It’s all been a bit scrappy and we seem to either not start properly or make a good start and then let the other team back into it. That’s what we’ve got to guard against.”
