The search for the Telegraph & Argus Team of the Century begins today and we start by casting our eyes over the full back position.

One of the first names on any all-time Bradford side will more often than not be a certain Keith Mumby.

On that basis, it would be no surprise to see the local legend automatically penned in at No 1 for the team of the century.

But a closer look at the club's full backs over the last 100 years sees Mumby with genuine competition.

The first legendary last line of defence to appear in Northern colours was George Carmichael, who joined from Hull KR in 1934 and was one of the club's finest signings.

He made 473 appearances in 16 seasons, kicking 409 goals and notching 18 tries, and was the No 1 in both the 1947 and 1948 Challenge Cup finals.

His eventual replacement was Junior All Black Joe Philips, who arrived from New Zealand and quickly endeared himself with his attacking prowess.

His six years as a player saw him overhaul Ernest Ward's career points record and his 661 goals tally wasn't overtaken until Mumby broke the record in 1983.

Philips also kicked 14 goals in a match versus Batley in 1952, a solo record which lasted until Henry Paul equalled it in 2000. He played between 1950 and 1956, making 232 appearances and scoring 47 tries before vitally leading the fight to see Northern rise from the ashes in 1964 as chairman of the new club.

Another contender is former Llanelli and Wales RU star Terry Price, who featured between '67 and '71, and was renowned for his kicking prowess which saw him join Buffalo Bills in the NFL.

Mumby though is the obvious choice. Known as Sir Keith' to Northern fans, he debuted as a 16-year-old in 1973 and went on to star for his home-town club for the next two decades.

He bagged 84 tries and 779 goals from an astonishing 588 games, his goals and points records only falling to Paul Deacon last season.

A Great Britain tourist three times, Mumby was viewed as the perfect full back.

Latterly, Stuart Spruce and Mick Withers have each served the Bulls brilliantly and they both could come into the thinking.

Now it's over to you. Just post your vote to: Team of the Century, T&A Sports Desk, Hall Ings, Bradford, BD1 1JR.
