BULLS media and PR manager Ryan Sparks is spearheading the launch of a rugby league team in nearby Mirfield.

The newly-formed Mirfield Stags are aiming to play in the Yorkshire Men's League in what will mark the return of the sport to the town.

Sparks, who has worked at the Bulls for the past year and is also serving as the Stags' general manager, believes the club will plug a gap in Mirfield, which currently has no rugby league or union team.

"A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes over the past couple of months and I'm delighted to say I'm now in a position to officially get the club off the ground," he said.

"There is a five-year plan in place and I hope the Stags can help shape the future of this famous town through sport.

"The idea is to create a long-lasting legacy here, with the eventual development of a fresh new hub for the whole community to enjoy and be proud of.

"And there can be no better time to launch such an exciting venture in my opinion, given the fact the sport is entering a whole new era at professional level.

"Next season looks set to be an incredible one and this club deserves to be a part of it."

Club officials have been working hard behind the scenes in recent weeks to secure playing and training facilities.

The Stags will operate in the summer season next year, with training due to begin in January prior to the big kick-off in March.

Initially, the Stags will operate a solitary open-age side but there are plans to eventually encourage junior rugby league action in the area.

"This is just the start for what I believe will eventually become a major player in Mirfield," said Sparks, a resident of the town.

"Everyone involved is fully committed to the cause and I am thrilled to say that plenty more exciting announcements are going to be made very soon.

"We are currently working closely with potential partners to help ensure next season – the first in our history – proves a major success.

"Work is also underway on the recruitment front and details of a launch night, where players will be able to sign up and get involved, will be confirmed in due course."
