DALE Ferguson will play no part in Scotland's forthcoming European Championships campaign in order to return to peak fitness for pre-season training with the Bulls.

The back-rower endured a nightmare debut campaign at Odsal after being sidelined by a succession of injuries before returning to action and making three appearances in August.

The highly-rated former Huddersfield player underwent a groin operation last week and is now recovering.

After speaking with Scotland coach Steve McCormack, performance manager Ollie Cruickshank and Bulls boss Jimmy Lowes, it was agreed that Ferguson would not play for the Bravehearts in their forthcoming matches against Wales, Ireland and France.

Ferguson said: "I spoke to Steve and Ollie and I was keen to play but, after talking to Jimmy, we decided it would be better if I rested my body after what has been a really bad season, to be honest.

"I had an operation last Wednesday because I had torn my groin off the bone but played those games at the back end of the season as I wanted to get some game-time under my belt.

"I've got it fixed up now and it's just a case of rehabbing it and starting running again in time for the start of pre-season.

"I am gutted because I love playing with the Scotland lads. But if I played in the European Championships and then missed most of next year, it would put my job in jeopardy.

"I want to repay the Bulls for standing by me and have a good season next year."

Ferguson and Lee Gaskell became the first players to commit to the Bulls' cause in the wake of the club's relegation after both men penned new two-year deals.

"I'm excited about next year and I'm pretty confident that we can kick on after what is sure to be a tough pre-season under Jimmy," said Ferguson.

"I'm looking forward to it and it will certainly be competitive in the back-row department with the likes of Pittsy (Jay Pitts) and the other lads.

"But that's what you need in any team because it means you can't afford to get complacent and need to perform every week, otherwise someone else will come in and take your place.

"It's looking good for next year and the new lads we have signed. I've played with Lucas Walshaw before and with Paul Clough at England Schoolboys level.

"I've not played in the Championship before, though, and I know it will be physical. But Jimmy has signed well and we have some big lads on board. I'm looking forward to it."

McCormack is set to announce his squad shortly with Danny Addy, who like Ferguson enjoyed a fine World Cup campaign last autumn, in line for inclusion.
