Bradford Bulls playmaker Luke Gale: We want to go out with a bang

"We’re down, so the shackles are off and we can play a bit," said Luke Gale ahead of tomorrow's Wigan showdown

LUKE Gale says the Bulls are aiming to bow out of Super League with “all guns blazing” ahead of tomorrow’s visit of champions Wigan.

Last week’s defeat at Huddersfield ensured the club will begin next season outside the top flight for the first time in over 40 years.

Head coach Jimmy Lowes is hoping his men can end a disastrous campaign on a high and Gale feels they can play with freedom now their relegation has been confirmed.

The England Knights scrum half is poised to join Castleford next season, although it is not clear when the move will be announced.

Gale said: “Last weekend was tough to take but I’m sure we’ll brush ourselves down with another six games to go.

“It’s definitely important to finish on a high and we’ve shown these last few weeks that we can play in patches.

“It’s just the consistency. We’ll score, then we’ll let them in.

“It’s probably a bit of mental toughness as much as anything but Jimmy has come in and tried helping with that.

“I’m sure these next six games we’ll dig in and hopefully grind out a couple of wins.”

Gale believes a positive end to this season can give the Bulls momentum to carry into the Championship next term.

Even though he will not be at Odsal in 2015, Gale said: “Jimmy has come in and will want to build for next year.

“We have to go into these last six games with all guns blazing and we have nothing to prove now have we?

“We’re down, so the shackles are off and we can play a bit.”

Gale’s departure and possible retirement of Matt Diskin could lead Lowes searching for a new skipper and vice-captain.

But Gale is confident that the Bulls can pose some questions against a formidable Wigan side featuring former Bradford star John Bateman, who will return to Odsal for the first time since his departure last year.

Gale said: “Wigan have got their attitude right under Shaun Wane.

“They’re a great side and they seem to perform no matter who plays.

“ Wigan are consistent every week and have a lot of good young kids. I like the way they play, their attitude and aggressiveness, so we know it will be tough.

“We’re not under any illusions it doesn’t get any easier – Wigan this week and then Leeds – but we’ll brush ourselves down and be ready for Sunday.”

Gale admitted the players owe the Bulls’ long-suffering supporters a strong end to the season as they prepare to part company with Super League.

He said: “They’ve been behind us every bit of the season and they continue to show in numbers.

“They are great fans and I’m sure when they’re down next year they’ll still come in numbers.

“Everyone talks about the players not having it easy but the fans have been through a lot these last few years. I feel for them.”

Lowes is poised to recall Elliot Kear and Danny Williams to the side tomorrow and rookie prop Jordan Baldwinson is also back in the 19-man squad.

Meanwhile, former Bulls stalwart Jamie Langley is searching for a new club after being told he will not be offered a new deal by Hull KR.

Injuries have limited the 30-year-old to just 11 appearances before he picked up a serious knee injury in a recent defeat to Warrington that ended his season prematurely.

Scores of Bulls fans tweeted Langley yesterday about returning to Odsal in a potential player-coach role, working under his old team-mate Lowes.

Hull KR coach Chris Chester said: “I don't think we'll see Jamie in a Rovers shirt again.

“It was a very nasty injury he sustained earlier in the season and it's going to take another three or four months to get over it.

“He's experienced and he still has a couple of years left in him because he looks after his body very well.

“Later down the line I think he'll make a very good coach. He's had some good coaches that he's worked under and that would be a natural progression for him.”

Meanwhile, Bulls academy product Sam Wood is to stay at Dewsbury on dual-registration until the end of the season.

At the right price he could do a decent job as back up. Maybe also on the coaching staff?

I would not sign Langley. His body has had enough battering and injuries are catching up with him. He should retire.

I've commented on Langley a few times on here in last few weeks and i believe he would do a good job for a season in the championship, and be a good assistant to jimmy in the process, learning the trade. Definitely worth a shot and would help tighten the leaky defence, passing on his knowledge to all these youngsters we're building the team around. Plus he's passionate about the club and a good role model who will push players in training like he always did for himself. Injuries aside he's been reliable throughout his career, so lets have him on board once more

Do we know if Langley has passed his coaching badge. As far as I know a player can not decide to go into coaching without any qualifications.

I have every bit of faith in Jimmy to sort this out , shame squad can t afgord us the luxury of telling those not wanting to be here next year goodbye and not pick them again. Not sorry to see mm go as prefer a prop eho can break a tackle, jf ok in 30 second stints and as for lg so predictable in all he does.

Want's to go out with a bang! Anyone would think he had the club at heart.
He signs a new deal just to get himself onto better money, then declares he's leaving any way.The door should have shut with a bang behind him and he should be on his way.
Same should happen to the others who are leaving, get shut now and start to re build for the future.
There's no loyalty in most players, we only need players who really want to play for BRADFORD BULLS.
Must agree with most on here, signing Langley would be a step in the wrong direction. We've got the new coach, lets build a team to take us forward, back into S/L where we belong.
