Wycombe 2 City 1

From the cauldron of Middlesbrough on the Premiership's opening day to a low-key finale at Wycombe, it's been some journey for David Wetherall.

Three divisions lower and nine years on, Adams Park could never hope to compare with the Riverside. But Wetherall's memories of his 330th appearance in claret and amber will be every bit as fond as his first.

The true professional that he is, the result of his last outing will irk. Particularly the two goals in the against column.

But City's new first-team coach will never forget the rousing farewell he received from the fans.

A week after Valley Parade said its own goodbye, the 600-strong travelling army - including joint chairman Mark Lawn in his replica shirt - delivered their own special encore.

As the non-stop chorus boomed from behind the goal, Wetherall was clearly moved.

"It was fantastic from the moment I first came on the pitch," he admitted in an emotional voice. "The support I've had since being at the club has been magnificent.

"I'm extremely fortunate to have made my living up to now by playing football. When you can do that and experience what I have, the last couple of weeks is really special.

"I don't think supporters sometimes realise the effect they have on people and what their backing does. It has made a massive difference to me and I really do appreciate it."

Wetherall's career change starts on Tuesday when he sits down with Stuart McCall as his freshly-appointed first-team coach.

The fact he has already been supplied with a company mobile suggests a busier summer break than he would have enjoyed previously with the "old job".

"A lot of thoughts went through my head when the final whistle went. The chief one was thinking that once I got off the pitch that was it - the last bit of the last game.

"That's when it finally hits you. But times change and you can't keep doing the same things forever."

Having made his mark as City's best centre half in recent times, Wetherall played out his final moments at centre forward!

McCall added to the sense of occasion in the last ten minutes by replacing Luke Medley with defender Simon Ainge to allow his skipper to maraud up top.

We all hoped for that dream scenario; one cross; one header; one emotional equaliser. Sadly it didn't happen, although Wetherall was not too far away from getting something on Paul Heckingbottom's centre right at the death.

As referee Nigel Miller called time, Wetherall was smothered in a hug by opposing centre half Leon Johnson. The respect was clear as the tribute chorus rang down from behind the goal.

McCall said: "It would have been nice if the big man had got on the end of something. But it's such a mark of the man that in his last season he has played every second of every game.

"I've told the rest of the lads that if they achieve even a quarter of what Wethers has done then they will have a good career. He's been a terrific servant, both for us and Leeds, and a great ambassador for this club.

"As much as I'm disappointed that he won't be putting his boots on for us next season, I'm excited that we're getting another coach."

Wetherall may not have had a Paul Gascoigne to contain, as he did on his City debut, but there was a Spaniard called Torres. Midfielder Sergio Torres was among the Wycombe big-hitters recalled by Paul Lambert for their final dress rehearsal before Sunday's play-off with Stockport.

By contrast, City fielded a side of mix-and-match variety. Scott Phelan was given a rare start in the week that he had been bombed out - two others of the unlucky 13, Alex Rhodes and David Brown, were named on the bench.

It looked a mis-match on paper and Wycombe needed only five minutes to show why. Youngster Matt Phillips carved through the midfield before teeing up the much-travelled Delroy Facey to score via the foot of the far post.

The lead was doubled after 25 minutes.

City had just survived a scare as Scott Loach flapped at a Torres free-kick, David McCracken outjumping Barry Conlon to nod against the bar. The ball was scrambled behind for a corner but Wycombe were not finished.

Mike Williamson won the flick-on and Leon Knight, so often a thorn in City's side, reacted quickly from close range to hook home.

Things were looking bleak for the Bantams but not that you'd have known it from the private party going on behind Loach's goal. The away fans, quite a few in fancy dress, had created their own carnival atmosphere from well before kick-off and weren't going to let the small manner of a lop-sided scoreline to spoil the fun.

They sung and danced and tried regularly to get the rest of an apathetic crowd to join in the Mexican wave - even getting McCall to join in at one stage.

Maybe the Wycombe fans were keeping their powder dry for next week. Without the constant banter from the travelling army, you'd have been able to hear a pin drop.

Barry Conlon went off with a knock to give Brown his final chance and the little terrier made a quick impact when he chased a well-placed through ball from Ben Starosta.

Brown's speed got him to the ball a fraction before keeper Frank Fielding in the corner of the area and had his legs taken away.

The fans shouted for Wetherall to take it, which he laughed off with a shrug on the halfway line; instead it was young Luke Medley's chance to mark his full debut by confidently sending the keeper the wrong way.

That was it for the scoring, though City threatened to pull level in an improved second-half display.

Wycombe always looked capable of moving up a gear or two but there was nothing half-hearted about Fielding's magnificent save to deny Omar Daley. City also had a decent penalty shout ignored after Phelan was blatantly shoved over by Craig Woodman.

On another day it could have been a major point of grievance but City's thoughts, both on and off the field, were concentrated on one man.

The banner unfurled before the game carried the words "Wetherall legend". It is impossible to argue.

Mr Sensible.

You can't even spell the names correctly.

What a nasty person you are.

For you to put a post like that on the report detailing DW's last game for BCFC shows just how out of touch with reality you really are.

You are a spiteful person.

You should be ashamed that you took the time to think those seriously deranged thoughts.

Bingley to Lynfield Mount is only a few miles and a few quid in the taxi.

Do us all a favour and book yours tonight.

On another more important point in relation to the photo, DW does look like he's getting some 'extra' special treatment from Stu! What's he doin' with his hand? Ha ;-)

Roll on next season. Up the Bantams :-)

I can tell you what the hand shake says, before anyone else is attracted to the toilet like humour that some fans may get stuck to- like the proverbial **** to the----
He is saying, “Well done David!, I am proud to belong to a club where in the field of sport there are people like you, who become heroes and legends because they are so committed to the club that they have nothing more left on themselves to give. In fact some like Wetherall are insulted and degraded along the way and are left penniless as a result of it, but still they somehow find the commitment. And he also might have said that, we applaud your efforts and patriotism to a club which has briefly seen the dizzy heights of the Premiership but mostly has only seen the drop of a fire station sliding pole. It takes the characteristics of an intelligent well rounded individual to makes a player a legend, that something extra special which shines and makes the difference. You will not find it in those that get derailed and disgraced and forgotten even though they are very skilled and talented. You will find it in the likes of Henry Coopers, Ian Bothoms, Mohammad Alis and Imran Khans of this world. Here we might not have such as mentioned global hero, but he is a hero none the less. And our big hero! A hero for us to look up to and to respect and to cherish. So I say to all of the army of Bradford fans of whom some posses very little patience, follow the example of the two legends, by recognising them for what they are and for what they have sacrificed and given to this club when it never had much to give back to them, by saying: THANKS.

I was so disgusted at our last home game at what I saw I am in 2 minds in reporting it to the police. For years, many supporters have made their unhappyness of the stewarding at Valley Parade full aware to the club and to the Telegraph & Argus, and as a club they have always defended the heavy handed actions of the nazi style bully tactics they employ. A couple of home games ago I was accused of being a criminal because I was carrying a can of cola and treated as such, all I wanted was a drink, my first one of the day, if there was reasonably priced drinks in the ground I would buy within, I bet the same steward would not stop a woman with lets say a metal flask about 2 or 3 times bigger which would be a more serious weapon. I bought a scarf from the shop as it was cold, so in a great mood, smiling walking towards the turnstyles, and then how am I treated within 5 minutes, I am searched before being let into the ground, anyone would have thought I had knicked the thing, nice customer service by the way if the club are reading this and want some feedback. I was so incensed at that point I have decided to disassociate myself from Bradford City and especially the ground as soon as my season ticket ran out and I will never ever set a foot in Valley Parade ever again till these little Hitlers are removed and replaced, and I am not the only one either. I was so close to taking action against this slander as I was so offended to be called a criminal just because "he did not know me". Constantly they bully little kids in and around me, to make themselves feel omnipotent, yet they never ever confront adults or anyone near their own size.

The incident which has actually made me contact Bradford City, to which I may I have had no reply at all, so I am really incences to make a national newspaper investigate the goings on at Valley Parade and shame the club or maybe, just maybe, I will make an official complaint to the police against the club as their lack of a response and constant defending of the stewards is so obvious they approve of such behaviour. So what I saw was damned right too far in my own opinion, I do not care what City class supporters as, young, old, male, female, black or white, at the end of the day, we are CUSTOMERS, and all we want after a week at work, or in some cases, school, is to get out and enjoy ourselves, yet the stewards are doing all they can to spoil people's experience at Valley Parade. Towards the end of the match, it was so obvious that a lot of people, mainly kids, would run onto the pitch in their masses, so what did the stewards do, just stand there leaving gaps knowing they would be be futile in trying, YET the area supervisor in front of the kop, the one that wears the blue jacket, middle aged with dark short hair took it upon himself to assault little kids running on the pitch, I saw him deliberately target small children by kicking hard at their ankles, some he missed, but he lashed out about half a dozen times, one small boy aged about 5 falling to his knees. If I hear one complaint to the police, I will definitely contact them as a witness to back them up as this was blatant deliberate physical assault on minors, it would have been interesting to see if he actually tried it with an adult. I do not want to see it in any form on adults in society, let alone an adult to young children. I still am in 2 minds to report it to the police and the person sat next to me also witnessed it. I have seen similar before at Valley Parade, but contact has not been made and personally, I have had enough of the treatment I receive and I constantly see. I would love to hear any thoughts on this as the club are not interested one little bit, in the past not listened to many fans, or in the present, be it City or the Bulls supporters comments several seasons ago when they spent 2 years at Valley Parade. I just have never had this or witnessed this at any other ground, be it in none league, international, football or Rugby League or Union.

This is one MORE supporter never stepping foot into Colditz in Bradford. I am taking my money elsewhere, I just need to decide where, but one thing is for certain, it certainly will not be Valley Parade, Elland Rd or Galpharm.

I wonder if I will get a reply from the club before I do make either the police or a national newspaper aware of the goings on which the club are fully aware of and are not prepared to do anything.

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

In regard to the post above: whilst I could never condone any form of violence towards children or adults for that matter, I feel this emotional post is a bit too one sided for my liking.

I am aware that the stewards at Valley Parade have not improved the experience for some fans over the past few years. At one point they were blamed for the lack of atmosphere at the ground. But I doubt the validity of the statement above, mainly due to its militancy and aggressiveness.

I recommend to the poster above that he rings the club and asks to speak with either Mark Lawn or his secretary to lodge a formal complaint if he feels this strongly. I'm sure the club would want to investigate this matter and find an appropriate resolution.

Moving on... going to miss Wethers. Hope we get a centre half with as much loyalty and ability as him. CTID

I already have tried to contact the club spikypete asking for a reply, and I have not got one. I raised concerns with the club earlier in the season with the number of missiles getting thrown onto the pitch at players from the kop, again I had not response. I have known others that have tried to contact the club to no avail and no response. So to all the posters that are saying I should try and contact the club or Mark Lawn. I have on a few occasions and hit a blank wall. So now after 2 decades, I have just had enough. I am speaking with my feet now. These omnipotent cretins thet were bullied at school I am washing my hands of them. As regards the criminal offense that the children are commiting running onto the pitch, that I do not agree with, but common sense dicates that the kids just want to enjoy the experience of actually going onto the pitch. I saw one mother go on and photograph her 2 little children on the pitch. Who in the right mind outside of a communist state would say there is anything wrong with that. I would not hesitate dropping these nazis in it at all bringing their illegal actions against supporters into the open, actions the club support and defend, but one thing the club will not dare do is bring illegal proceedings against all the children that ran onto the pitch, can you imagine the publicity. If the club has any sense, children should be placed in the upper tiers to help stop pitch invasions.

The club are not interested, so I will have to find a body that is interested in the way Bradford City treat their paying customers from entering to leaving.

One last thing, a steward has got no legal right to search you or your belongings, I am not sure if they have the right to refuse you entry if you have paid, their supervisor might, but I am not sure a steward can. Only a policeman has the power to search you legally. With all these human rights now, I am sure taking a club to court that bieng treated like a criminal for buying a legal product for consumption purposes and refused entry does cross the line of human rights. I take a drink especially when it is hot and sunny, on those health and safety grounds alone that is a good enough reason to purchase such a legal item.

DOWN WITH THE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICES AND SUB STANDARD TREATMENT.

You would not get treated like this walking into a cinema or a shop or say any other type of industry. So why Football? Supporters are treated illegally and their rights infringed but noone has got the gall to point this out and everyone accepts it. I am not now. Simple as that.
