    Forget about star City recruits
Stuart McCall insists City's budget will not allow big-name signings
Stuart McCall insists City's budget will not allow big-name signings

Stuart McCall has told City fans to remain realistic about his summer transfer targets.

Various names are flying about as the annual speculation game kicks off in earnest now the season is over.

McCall is targeting as many as six new faces after cutting 13 from his squad last week.

Rumours are rife about possible arrivals, with Morecambe winger Garry Thompson, Huddersfield's Bradford-born midfielder Chris Brandon and prolific Mansfield hitman Michael Boulding all in the frame.

But McCall, who is avidly watching the current promotion play-offs for potential targets, is quick to put the lid on any expectations of capturing a genuine established star.

He said: "We'd all like a big-name star player but we have to face facts about where we are. We are a club in League Two at this moment in time and we don't pay massive wages.

"We're not going to lure anyone from the Championship or anything like that but as long as they are quality players for this level and are good enough to hopefully take us up, then that's all I want.

"Look at Peterborough last season, when they went and bought Walsall's two best players (Chris Westwood and Dean Keates) and got promoted. They weren't household names by any means but were good enough to get the job done."

McCall, who involved David Wetherall in his first official coaching get-together on Tuesday, is banking on the size of City's fan-base proving a strong factor in persuading players to join.

"We've had superb backing all season and you saw that from the number of supporters who came away to Wycombe for what was a fairly meaningless end-of-season game," he said.

"Players love to perform in front of big crowds and if it comes down to a toss-up between signing for us or a number of other clubs in League Two, then I would be disappointed to lose out.

"We are trying to nab players from higher divisions or the best ones from this level but the best players, at the moment, are contracted.

"We've got good players in the side but we just need to add four, five or six quality new ones. Then I'm confident we will be all right."

    Sensible

You seem to have it in for any thing that the management say or do. It's as if you blame SM and the rest of the management team for our current League 2 status, which would surely be unfair considering they took over after relegation to the lower leagues? Since SM took over, with a brand new team, we have seen progress up the table with decent performances and a great City feeling amongst the genuine fans. This is not what we've seen since Stuart McCall was last at City when we were managed by the very superb Paul Jewell.

SO......a question for you Mr Sensible...... exactly what, about the above article and what SM has said is not making sense to you? Oh Sensible one..... do enlighten us, because as far as I'm concerned it all reads realism. Also what would you do different? Don't say 'cull' the management team unless you can think of any realistic replacements.

We ALL await your wise and intelligent responses to these questions.......

Well said McCall, however I would see anyone a star signing compared to what I have to watch this season! Come on City!!

SM has it spot on - We can't expect the cream of league 1&2 to come knocking on our door witht he budget SM will have. These players will be getting approached by championship clubs. However, this club has achieved promotions in the past(and also many many other clubs) with good solid professionals that gel, we don't have room for players that have no heart. We don't need 'star' players in this division. We need 15 or 16 players that are prepared to put there bodies on the line for the club. Yes, by all means try and get quality, but it's upto SM to gel the squad. For me that is critical and if SM can achieve that, it will go a long way to us securing at minimum a play-off place next year. I have already bought my season ticket for next season and can't wait. There WILL be dissappointments next year that you can guarantee, but this club has many appealing aspects - The stadium, the legend that is SM and of course, the unbelievable fans. I truly believe that although we won't have a massive budget to spend in pre-season, i am confident SM will gel the players into a team capable of getting out of League 2.

    NEW SIGNINGS?

Whats everyones thought about Luke Beckett and Chris Brandon from Huddersfield? I personally think they would do a good job for us.....only problem is why are we settling for Beckett without even trying for Boulding at mansfield? worth a bid at least at the end of the day hes playing non league next year didnt mansfield go down? McGod has said that a stiker is his top tranfer target? - surely a centre half is and ive heard no rumours of who we are looking at in that dept?

YES agreed, it's what we all believe and with good reason.

The whole football plan and business plan makes sense, I think some forget it's not just about the game, it's a whole businesslike approach that is required to take the club forward. If that approach is not taken City will end up AGAIN on dodgy ground. SM is not only running the football side but is having to keep in mind the business side of the club. It's all about being measured and doing the right things at the right time, and that includes buying or borrowing the right players at the right time.

BTW lots of people round me (upper tier of carlsberg) have renewed their tickets.

C'mon- let's get VP full to the rafters next season.

Sorry Globalman thanks for the offer but will have to decline. How can I accept an offer which I know will not materialise. Perhaps you can answer LeagueJunkie's question. Glad Globalman has got his ticket although with all the shouting he has done I thought is would have been Number 1. Hope he paid by credit card. Shaun- do you really care that much?

Awww it brings a tear to my eye to know that it bothers you sooooo much that you8 have to 'let it all out'# on here.

    A sort of therapy perhaps?

Anything else 'bothering' you my friend?

Hey up- no sorry bud-my tickets were only 2,3,4 + 5.

    Was it a question?

I don't know the answer but I bet you do! ;-)

I guess we shall wait and see....

Nowt much else to do over the summer is there?

Once your lot flunk out of the play offs and go back into administration then there won't be much else for you to do either?

ohh how many little petty things can you find to to criticise BCFC for? I look forward to your forthcoming best seller '100 reasons why Bradford City are a disgrace and no one will buy a season ticket for them, but the club will lie and say lots of people have'.

Can't wait for the new season to start. Sounds like we are going to have a better class of player on the pitch. L1 here we come!

Darryl Bfd 2 Typical of a City Supporter. Crude, obscene and unable to take critisism. Sell 9,000 tickets and the mental health unit in Bradford will be full of city fans. P.S. Get on down and make the 9,000. I hope you do, in fact 'on paper' you may and if you do YOU will as a club pay the tax on the same. How you mugs can be wound up by the management. Come on get a life. P.S. Got my Visa today for Moscow but will come back.

Sensible, I'm glad it got a reaction from you, I'm not crude, I'm not obscene, and being a City fan for 32 yrs I've taken my fair share of criticism (spelt correctly!!), I'm not being funny, but I can't see what you're on about paying tax on 9000 tickets, of course the club will pay tax on it, they have to declare that to the Inland Revenue, however 18000 tickets issued at the same cost as 9000 equates to the SAME tax bill?

All I ask is that you stick to your own teams issues instead of incessantly trying to wind genuine City supporters up on here, quit the propaganda campaign and make USE of your energy instead of acting like a f@rt in a space suit...pointless. CTID

Words have always failed you NOTSO sensillybell, your biggest problem is not recognising the fact! You have a marked lack of insight/sensitivity. There is a syndrome about people who throw things and run away before the victim can identify them and respond. The fact that you always make puerile comments, yet do not declare an allegiance so that we can all see who you (try to) identify with is very cowardly, but par for your actions.

We can also forget about getting "star" recruits in bright yellow/orange or blue coats at the front of the stands also.

The are many which go to jail for pety crimes, let them do community service and be a steward, they would probably be more caring towards fellow human beings.

Apart from the fact that it is extremely difficult to pass the qualifications needed if any jail time has been served. Not impossible, but you are scrutinised and previous crime is taken into account.

I believe so, but certain crimes and the timeline between them occuring and the application for a door license are taken into considertion. Any violent offence, drug related or obviously crimes against children and there is no chance a license will be granted. Fraud committed at age 17 when the applicant is 30 is usually overlooked as time has been served and it is no detrement to performing the duties of doorperson/steward or crowd control.
