Lawn: We will go new year shopping

Mark Lawn has dismissed suggestions that City have written off this season.

With all the talk of rebuilding his squad, Stuart McCall is already planning ahead for next summer when he will have only four first-team players in contract.

The type of players I want to come here on loan are people the fans would be excited about. They are players that have been here before

Mark Lawn

But Lawn insists that is not an indicator that the Bantams have effectively declared the current campaign over in terms of winning immediate promotion.

The joint-chairman claims that the next transfer window will see plenty of business at Valley Parade - and hinted that supporters will be excited by the familiar names on City's shopping list.

Lawn said: "I think we can bring in better players in January and think we can push. We're certainly not looking at writing the season off.

"The type of players I want to come here on loan are people the fans would be excited about. They are players that have been here before and the fans like them because they are good players."

He admits that City's current squad is too big and they are trying to move some out to create more room, both physically and financially, for new recruits.

Lawn feels that a cull will be necessary for McCall to start creating the team he wants.

"We've got too many players at the moment and too much dead wood. From a business point of view it's ridiculous keeping dead wood here and we do need to get people out to get others in.

"We need to look at players all over the park. I think Stuart knows what he wants and where he needs to strenghthen but you have to make sure he gets the right ones.

"There are going to be lots of changes. We had the opportunity to do it in the summer but Stuart quite rightly said that he didn't know this level and didn't want to gamble and get it wrong.

"Now he's out and about looking and knows what he wants. We'll have a meeting within the next month or so to see what he wants to do in January."

I don't believe what I'm hearing here. Doesn't shopping mean spending money? then he says we know the loan players we want. Will they ever learn we need a team of Braford City Players not loans from other clubs. We need stability and some half decent players. If we are keeping the current rubbish until new year we could well be religated by then. Deffo no chance of play offs! I really do despare. Why get all these fans in and then give them a pile of poo to watch?

Sludgy, how can we possibly do any proper shopping if we cant even afford £55,000 for Willy Topp ?
This guy is meant to be a class player at this level.
We arnt going shopping in January, we are going begging to see whats spare at other clubs, dosnt sound like a promotion team to me.
I hope they prove me wrong as this is the only team i will ever support & it would be curtains for this club if they go down again.

I agree with you a bit there Ambrad. Julian I trust running the club, but with Lawn he is an unknown quantity when it comes to the clubs long term future and the affect his dreams will have on the club and with 2 chairmen with 2 different ideas, both ambitious, one we know is a little on the cautious side because what he has already gone through previously with City. I just hope they both pull in the same direction for the long haul and that includes the position of the manager and letting him do his job.

With all this talk of loan players, why can we not hear the same amount of talk about the youth policy. I have been banging the drum for a hell of a long time regarding this and we need to invest in youth.

So why all the moaning about £55,000 for Topp. We were offered him for free, then they turn round and said they want money. £55,000 can easily be £500,000 after a while, so another reason we should buy him. Think about it in reality, £55,000 can easily turn into £0. Look at the biggest turd of an investment in David Hopkins from Leeds. To get a player in to sell on is not ideal because just look at how much money we have received for players over the past 5 years, apart from Windass and Johnson I can only think of Francis bringing in an ample amount of the green stuff into Valley Parade, plus the bonus we got from Palace for Matt Clark, even if he retired from injury quite a bit before their promotion to the Premiership. With the same argument, we could get players from none league, pay a pittance and sell them on for a profit, do we really want to be a buy and sell club, the only ones that prosper are shareholders, noone else.

We need to speculate to accumulate. Beagrie & Lawrence both cost around the £50k mark & just look at the impact they had. We didnt sell them on and make a profit but they were worth far, far more than what we paid. I know most City fans hate him but Oh to have a chairman with Richmonds vision again......

Trouble is when that vision became a reality, his ego became as inflated as a Shevchenko wage packet.

If he'd left the buying and selling to Jewell we'd be in a far better position now.

I'd rather not to take the risk and still have a club. Remember ML is a fan and a long term one at that, not some johnny come lately like the ones I've seen criticising him. If it were in the interest of the club, and himself it would be a done deal, but he is also a succesful businessman and seeing as most of us spend all day putting comments on here I'd wager we aren't in his league. So my advice is let him run it his way, and see what the outcome is, or would you rather have a euphoric short term success and then nigh on 10 years of hell and worry not knowing if the club would exist any more. There are valid reasons behind not forking out what seems a measly sum, it will become apparent shortly.
