Wethers: We've hit rock bottom

City were today waking up to the prospect of life back in the basement division as David Wetherall pleaded: Let's hope this is as low as it gets.

Saturday's pathetic 3-0 defeat at Chesterfield condemned the Bantams to relegation with one game still to go.

We’ll have to plan as best we can for next season and keep our fingers crossed and hope that this is the bottom and that we do bounce

David Wetherall

Wetherall, his voice cracking with emotion, admitted the team had completely let down the 1,600 away fans who had made the trip to Saltergate dreaming of a late escape from the drop.

Eight years after preparing to lead City into the Premiership, the caretaker-boss was forced to discuss their prospects in League Two.

"We've hoped for a long time that as a football club we've hit the bottom and bounced," said Wetherall. "But it's not really worked out like that.

"You look at the financial problems the club have had. We hoped to break even 18 months ago, we didn't; we still lost money and we've still lost money this season.

"We know we're going to be seen as a big club down there but we also know that purse strings get tightened.

"We've got players still under contract but we haven't got many and what money is available for others I don't know but we'll have to plan as best we can for next season and keep our fingers crossed and hope that this is the bottom and that we do bounce.

"I hope already that we have a good year next season and everybody gets positive about the football and about this club again."

City, who left the bottom division in 1982, went out with a whimper against a side also relegated alongside them because of Cheltenham's comeback win at Rotherham.

Donovan Ricketts let the first goal slither through his hands after 15 minutes and the visitors never looked like staging a recovery.

Wetherall added: "It was a sloppy goal that should never have gone in and that seemed to knock a lot of stuffing out of us. We didn't perform as an attacking force, didn't create enough, didn't pass the ball enough and didn't regain possession quickly enough. We didn't play to the principles we're trying to get into the team and that led to us losing a game we were all so desperate to win.

"I expected so much more and have to be very careful with what I say but we simply weren't good enough and got exactly what we deserved, which was nothing."

The City fans remained defiantly singing at the final whistle and Wetherall acknowledged the role they have played since he took over.

"The support we received was outstanding again and they deserved better. They gave us great backing and I thought it was really going to lift us but it's not worked out like that.

"Relegation is not just about Saturday, although the performance was nowhere near good enough, but the season as a whole and now it's been confirmed there is no hiding place.

"I'm feeling a mix of emotions but the over-riding one is obviously sadness for the football club and everyone connected with it."

I hope Wetherall is not the manager next season, stick to being a player Wether's, turn down the job if you are offered it.

David - if offered the managers job in the summer please do not accept it. I hope that you eventually go on to become a succesful manager but the City job, with all the restrictions brought about by our previous spells in administration; lack of quality and passion shown by the current players and the difficulties we will face in recruiting and financing fresh players with the hunger and desire we will need in division 4 (sorry, I am old school!) will be a major taskk for an experienced manager. We need David Wetherall to be focused entirely on playing and leading from the field of play. Your experience as a defender will be vital next season - please stick to what you do very well whilst learning the ropes from an experienced head. The caretaker role you have endured was always a poisoned chalice owing to the poor squad yo inherited. Your time as a manager will come - hopefully in much better circumstances where you will have the time and resources to learn from any mistakes. CTID

It hurts Wethers cos your one of us, unfortunately a large amount of the squad ( who we own) arent good enough to make the grade and the rest can go back to their parent clubs. We really need to have some bite and balls next season- it aint gonna be pretty. Perhaps get Law back in, i believe he was unfairly sacked before but does know the background of this division and whats needed.

.. I don't think Denis Law is interested in the City job. You can't possibly mean that joker who managed us several years, who goes by the same name?!

At the risk of a barrage of abuse I think wethers should just go completely. I dont want him at the club anymore, i do like the guy as a person but he is not helping the club at all. Apart from that first season in the premier he has done nothing. He has a depressing losing mentality and we need to rid that from the club. The players yesterday were a disgrace and would happily not see any of them ever again in a city shirt.

The one thing that we can take any comfort from this season is the fantastic support our club has - the fans have been an absolute credit. We have been one of the best supported teams in the division, in spite of the poor and passionless football served up by a team that has been shameful, particularly at home. We need to get the finances sorted out and find some players who want to play and show some team spirit and commitment. If we can get some cash for Windass and perhaps offload a couple of others, we will almost be rid of the high earners from previous years and can base pay on being in the fourth division, with sensible wages and payment by performance. I hope that the fantastic supporters stay with the club next season and have better football to watch. To get out of this division, you need to have organisation, motivation and strong, fit players - so we obviously need a new broom to sweep clean! I don't see many players at this club that fit the bill or who are up for the challenge. Well done, City fans - proud of you.

Dave S, as you're born in Bradford, I'm gutted that you're a Leeds fan. Perhaps if all the football supporting public born in Bradford supported their local team, City wouldn't be in their current financial position. I find Bradfordians supporting Leeds (or Liverpool or Manchester Utd.) no less bizarre than an English person supporting Germany. Do you support the Rhinoceroses too?

I for one know where you are coming from. With so many players out of contract this season, it is time to get a big broom and clear out the dead wood. Personally, I would let the following players go:

Edgill, Bower (poss to Burnley if rumours are true), Wetherall (the head is still there but the legs left a couple of seasons ago), Windass (should receive a decent fee from Hull OR poss Wigan), Brown (not even as good as Sanasy or Forrest), Howarth (never really looked like putting pressure on Ricketts), Muirhead (don't know why Wethers brought him back. Having said that, still don't know why Todd re-signed him after Robbo released him), oh and not forgetting Bridge-Wilkinson (not really delivered after his first decent season).

I would like us to keep:

Ricketts, Swift, Clarke, Ainge, Barrau, Schumacher, E Johnson, Penford, Bentham, Daley and Colbeck.

I would like to see us try to bring back:

Dyer, Weir-Daley and Parker (as long as we play him at left back!), Wilbraham OR Steve Torpey.

For Wethers, it is going to be almost impossible to play alongside players you were giving the hair dryer treatment to at the end of this season. His salary will be fairly high and for league 2, we could do without it. I salute the legend that is David Wetherall, but now is the perfect time to go.

At the risk of a barrage of abuse I think wethers should just go completely. I dont want him at the club anymore, i do like the guy as a person but he is not helping the club at all. Apart from that first season in the premier he has done nothing. He has a depressing losing mentality and we need to rid that from the club.
