Bullock getting earache off Hunt in Bradford City central defensive role

Lee Bullock column

You go to football to get away from the missus having a moan – but Hunty is far worse. He was on at me for the whole 90 minutes against Aldershot!

But seriously, it’s good having Hunty and Luke Oliver helping me get to grips with playing centre half. With the gaffer and Colin Cooper being former central defenders as well, I’m not short of people for advice.

Normally players are moved further back as their pace goes. But being as I’ve never had any, I think it’s just because I’m getting older.

I’ve only done two and a half games there so far but I’m enjoying it, though it’s very different to what I’m used to.

When you’re in centre midfield, everything goes on 360 degrees around you. At centre half, all the play is in front.

Now and again I will find myself jogging off towards the centre circle again. Then you’ll hear Hunty screaming and shouting and I quickly remember what position I’m in.

Playing alongside Luke is good and I’ve already noticed the centre forwards moving over to my side because they see the size of him and want to keep away!

A few people have mentioned my ‘trip’ on the Aldershot player but I was just conveniently placing my body between him and the direction of the ball … When he was moaning, I heard the ref say it was just a case of us running across each other. I must be learning the position!

Monday was such a big win and there’s no better time to nick it than in the last minute. Whether Dave got the final touch or not, he deserves to be in double figures after the season he’s had.

I’ve had to wait for my chance but I’ve never been one to kick up a fuss and start banging on the manager’s door.

I’ve been in football long enough to know that, whatever happens, the opportunity will come if you keep working hard.

But I don’t feel as if I can be a proper member of the centre halves’ club until I’ve got my first clean sheet. We’ve been conceding a fair few goals lately, so it would be nice to keep it tight on Saturday.

Good for you Bully, thorough proffesional and top bloke to boot.

Watched him against Derby , in the reserves, at centre half and he looked totally confident and calm in his duties. Could be a real asset in that position next season.

Might not be good news for Louis Horne though, not one first team start in his two years as a pro.
