Phil Parkinson: Don’t let Bradford City cup run go for a Burton

Luke Oliver is battling to shake off a shoulder injury in time to face Burton in tonight’s Capital One Cup tie Luke Oliver is battling to shake off a shoulder injury in time to face Burton in tonight’s Capital One Cup tie

City chase a place in the last 16 of the Capital One Cup tonight with Phil Parkinson telling them: Don’t let our hard work go to waste.

Parkinson’s men face Burton at Valley Parade aiming to become the final League Two side standing in the competition.

It is City’s first appearance in the third round for 11 years – and they have not made it beyond that since the 1988-89 quarter-final campaign.

Luke Oliver (shoulder) and Kyel Reid (ankle) both face late tests and Parkinson is expected to reshuffle the side that made it three wins on the trot at Oxford.

City have seen off higher-division Notts County and Watford so far but Parkinson is not expecting an easier time against opponents only three points behind them in the table.

He said: “We know it’s going to be difficult because Burton have had a very good start. They’ve got a lot of attacking options themselves and they are a decent side, no question.

“You don’t beat Leicester on their patch unless you’re a good side. We saw them last week beat York, so we know what to expect.

“We’ve got to pick the strongest team we can, bearing in mind all the games we have coming up.

“Both teams have worked very hard to get to this point. We’ve had two great wins on our travels and now we want to capitalise with the first home draw we’ve been given.

“We understand the implications of it and our preparation will be as thorough as ever, whether it’s a cup game or in the league.”

Parkinson made six changes for the previous round at Vicarage Road, where Garry Thompson emerged as the stoppage-time hero. Thompson is set for a start and there could be opportunities for the likes of Ricky Ravenhill and Stephen Darby.

The City chief said: “We’re not making changes just because it’s a cup game. When we played Gillingham we made a couple of changes for Fleetwood on the Tuesday.

“We’re looking at the freshness of the lads and we’ll pick a team we feel is the best one to win this game.

“Olly’s got a problem with his shoulder and Reidy took a whack at Oxford. We’ll look at them today and make a late call.

“It’s not about 11 players this year; it’s about all 19 or 20. You saw that again on Saturday when Garry Thompson came off the bench and did well.

“We want to keep winning and improving as both a team and a squad and everyone’s going to be required.”

The Bantams go into the cup clash in high spirits after Saturday’s first league victory on the road and their third on the spin.

Parkinson said:“That was a big win for us. It’s always important to get that first league away win and the supporters who went down there saw a very professional team.

“But we move on. We’ve got to keep it going and relish the next challenge, which is beating Burton.”

Gary Rowett’s team warmed up with a last-minute equaliser at Torquay but that did not tell the story of a game in which Burton hit the woodwork three times.

Left back Damien McCrory said: “We’re not scared of anyone. With the form we’re in, four out of four unbeaten, we could go on and get a result.

“The lads are scoring goals and we’ve kept three clean sheets in five games. Our performance is good all over the pitch.”

Can't believe the prospects of the game going ahead haven't been called into question yet, there was standing water on the pitch for the Fleetwood fixture and there's been a hell of a lot more rain these past two days.
On a side note, Colchester sacked their manager yesterday and one or two on various message boards are clamouring for a return of Parkinson!

Absoloutely. The club/paper should clarify the situation about the prospects of the match going ahead. It will be appaling if it is cancelled @ 6.30! Talk about customer care. Lets see a sensitive fan friendly approach. If it is not confirmed for 5.00 pm then I will not risk a wasted journey.

Thrilled to bits on our dream start to the season. P10 W7 D1 L2 (In all competitions). However, a word of caution, we will hit a bad patch sooner or later. I don't count losing an odd game a bad patch, it's when we have no win in 4 or 5 that I count as a bad patch. It's when this occurs that we will really see how far we have come as a club, team and supporters. It's upto the club to keep the faith, the team to fight tooth and nail to get a win in whatever way is possible and the supporters to back the team 100% when things are not going well. I am convinced that come May 2013 BCFC will be dreamland and looking forward to League 1 and further glory. Only by sticking together ALL season no matter what happens, will our great club finally drag it's backside out of League 2 and onto bigger and better things. Prediction for tonight - 2-1 victory for the Bantams.

I spoke to David Baldwin about the Standing Water problem. Especially after £50,000 was spent on renewing the drainage etc. in the Summer(- What Summer!).
Mr.Baldwin said he was bringing the Contractors back to rectify the drainage anomaly. The Club needed approximately 9 Days between usage/fixtures, to allow the contractors the time needed, to complete the repairs.
*
I do not know if that work has been done.
*
The Pitch has looked very good over the last two home matches. At one point,I felt you could play golf-putting on the very green short surface!.Credit to the Ground-Staff.
*
I hope there is an early pitch inspection from the Referee. So his decision can be made to stop all Supporters from travelling long distances etc.

I'd say after recent years it is more important we notify the travelling Burton fans, having had them travel two years ago for no reason as the ground was unplayable.

What customer care are you expecting? A personal call? The club having direct satellite link to the main base stations around Yorkshire for a fuller picture so you don't lose out on £15 whilst the club would anticipate a loss running into 10s of thousands. Get real, check twitter, T&A, if it is off they will say, they cannot say if it rains between 5PM and 7.45 what impact that will have.

I, too, am concerned about the effect all this rain will have on the pitch and the risk of it being damaged if the game goes ahead.

I'd rather it be postponed if there is any risk of the surface being ruined for weeks to come. I recall one game around Christmas time, one season, when we played on a blatantly unplayable pitch and it was spoilt for the rest of the season.

Additionally, the gate would be affected anyway if this rain continues.
Just our luck, when we're going well.

Answers the question re playing without Hanson. Just doint ever do it again. flowerpot men up front tonight.

Duke needs to retire, or take up vampirism, catching crosses is part of keeping goal you sock.

Their keeper flaps at everything so Thompson decides to walk the ball towards him instead of shooting.

Missing Ollie, Hanson and Reid for certain, probably Wells too.

PP, in this instance it is you that has blown the hard work away. Hope the above all make me eat my words but Duke never will and Jimmy should always start.

Not picking a fight, but big JH hardly made an impact when he came on. You say we should never start without him, but he does need resting now and again. He didn't pull up any trees when he came on last night and I would argue he did nothing more than Thompson. Reid and Wells made the impact.

As for Duke, I think you are being harsh on him too. Perhaps you were struggling to understand, like the rest of us, how we were behind in a game we were dominating, but why criticise the keeper? The goals came when our defenders switched off. Neither were keeper errors and he couldn't have come for either.

Don't be too harsh on the fringe players fella

JH eventually began to win the headers and the ball stayed at the ops end of the pitch, a combination of all 3 subs admittedly but it was his deft piece of skill and thinking which set up the equaliser.

He held the ball, Thommo didn't, he headed the ball, Thommo didn't, he found Wells with four flick ons and Thommo with one directed header towards the RW.

As for the Duke criticism, I have backtracked slightly on last nights performance and credited him with holding his concentration to enable him to make the very important save when at 2-1. I also think he should have done better with the first, I think JM would have got both hands on it and pushed it round and certainly do not now think he should have come for their second, that lies at the feet of the defence. As does the switch off initially by Meredith when thinking the ball out wide would go into touch.
