Phil Parkinson insists Garry Thompson’s chance at Bradford City will come

Garry Thompson was left frustrated after not featuring against former club Morecambe this week Garry Thompson was left frustrated after not featuring against former club Morecambe this week

Garry Thompson has been tipped for an influential role in City’s season despite being snubbed against his old club.

The former Morecambe winger was left unused on the bench for Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Valley Parade .

Phil Parkinson could understand Thompson’s frustration at missing out on a reunion with the side that he propelled into the Football League five years ago with a Wembley goal.

But the City chief stressed that he will have a key part to play in the hectic months ahead.

Parkinson said: “It’s very difficult and I could tell Garry was obviously disappointed he didn’t get on or start the game because it was his old club.

“But Steve (Parkin) and I on the touchline can only make decisions that we feel are right at any given time. I felt Will Atkinson’s more disciplined approach on that right-hand side was the right call.

“Thommo is going to be a big player for us. He’s got to be patient but he will get his chance.

“We’ve got a lot of games coming up and, when he does feature, the supporters will see a really good player.”

Thompson has already made his mark in the Capital One Cup by firing the dramatic stoppage-time winner at Watford. But he has not appeared in City’s starting line-up in the league since playing the first 58 minutes at Gillingham on opening day.

Atkinson and Nahki Wells were sent on in the latest home victory before goalkeeper Matt Duke was used as the final sub when Jon McLaughlin hurt his side.

Parkinson felt Wells bounced back after a poor display from the bench against Barnet as all three replacements contributed to a fourth straight Valley Parade victory.

He said: “Nahki was disappointing on Saturday but I’ve got to say he was back to his best. We need him at his sharpest and when he plays like that, he looks great.

“I thought Will was unlucky not to be in the team after his early-season form. But he hasn’t sulked and made a big contribution.

“And Dukey did well at the end. He’s an experienced keeper and knows how to finish a game off.

“He’s taken the fact that he’s not playing like a man. His attitude in training and around the lads has been absolutely exemplary. He deserved to get a taste of it and might well end up playing on Saturday.

“It’s so important (to have a strong bench). When we sat down in the summer, we wanted a smaller squad but we wanted a squad of players who can all feature.

“It sounds an obvious thing but this time last year there was probably 30-odd players but half of those weren’t good enough for the team. We’re confident of throwing anybody in now and knowing they will do a good job.”

Its a squad game, your chance will come. I do not feel Thompson has helped himself tho, by stating he wants to play up front, he was signed to solve our problem on the right hand side. He was unlucky with the injury in pre season but The players in his position have done well Hines Hanson Connell and wells, so he can not argue on that front. I just hope he is not a big time Charlie who will sulk and cause unrest, especially after the positive start we have made.

PP said the same about Ross Hannah and He is still waiting for that chance and in my opinion he might not get that chance and will be off in January along with Nahki.

Ross Hannah is not good enough. I would people would stop bleating on about him being our saviour. His attitude it top class, but he will be playing non league football again next season.

Hannah is the same as Thompson and even Darby, who wud u play these three over at the moment? If we were loosing and not scoring then an arguement could be made. In my opinion all three will get a chance this season.

Been away for a few weeks...ITS GREAT TO SEE we have dispatched another couple of poor sides at home!!.
WONDER if "deadbeat" can sort out our away form??.
After watching the ROTHERS game I have my doubts....Another BIG GAME this weekend for "deadbeat" and his tactics....and whenever he has had a big test..HE HAS FAILED!!.

I think Thompson should concentrate on the position he was signed to play 1st rather than attempting to be a striker not done anything special yet for me!
Jimmy doing well marching on to his 20 goals this season!!!!!!!!!!!

It's great having a squad of players who are quality and as Parkinson says, whoever he puts in.. they will do a good job for the team. We are looking strong and good enough to continue in this rich vein of form throughout this season. The quality of the goals against a decent Morecambe team speaks volumes.

Totally agree that Thompson hasnt helped limself by declaring himself primarily as a striker now when i first heard he was coming in i thought thank goodness we have solved our prob on the right hand side. Also just a little niggle in the back of my head wonders if he is Parkies signing sure he prob is just a little niggle of doubt.

You really dont do yourself any favours Shaun "...ITS GREAT TO SEE we have dispatched another couple of poor sides at home!!" Barnet are a poor side no one can disagree but Morecambe ?? up to playing City they had played 3 away games scoring 8 and conceding 0 hardly a poor side !!.

It was muted on Tuesday night Ross Hannah would be going out on loan, shame really but it's no good him warming the bench week in week out !!.

Thats true though it doesn't really tell City anything though as everybody knows he can do it at non league level. Keeps him match fit I guess.

Although Hannah has proved he can score in non-league, he has never scored at Conference level. Even last season, when in loan, he was only playing in the third (or fourth) tier of non-league football. This will be Hannah's biggest test and if he does well and scores plenty for Grimsby, then he will surely return and get opportunities.

Time will tell if he can deliver at that level but my fingers will be crossed.

Hunting for cheap child labour can be classed as work. If it was the labour you were there for.

Seriously Shaun, this side will only become stronger. The wins so far have looked comprehensive but without getting out of second gear. We've played in 20 minute spells but looked in control even when taking a breather.

I'd give it until your next visit before condemning or praising but hopefully an emphatic couple of home wins v Burton and PV will put a smile on your grizzly fizzog.

It is the ex City junior. With Cleverley and George Green too there could be a future England team full of ex City kids. Does anyone know of any others? City earnmoney if Wisdom progresses so good to see him in the first team and on the scoreshet.

Not much help but seem to remember we had a highly thought of keeper at one time that we sold on similarly...perhaps to 'Boro when they were a decent team. Can't remember his name though or whats happened to him..not sure if anybody else can help.

"Keith Lamb sent us an offer in October and Newcastle also expressed a very strong interest, but Middlesbrough recently came back in for him and doubled their original offer," Bantams joint-chairman Julian Rhodes has said.

Ah, Filler. Is that the yound keeper that left us for Boro? If it is the same player, he is now playing for Stirling Albion in the Scottish Division2. He was one of the players that had to pay £200 for a "So you think you're good enough" trial with the Scottish club, which caused condemnation from the PFA. I didn't realise he was the same kid though.

Oh dear that didn't end up to well then.

Wonder if ML still asked for a 10% cut of the £200 he paid as part of his future transfer fee clause :)
