Ricky Ravenhill made a welcome return from a six-week absence but could not prevent a heavy Central League defeat for City reserves at Port Vale.

Watching City boss Phil Parkinson will have been delighted to see the midfielder play for 71 minutes unscathed before being substituted as he made his return from a knee ligament injury picked up during pre-season.

Club captain Ravenhill was joined in the line-up by fellow first-team squad members Ross Hannah , Adam Baker and Carl McHugh, who scored the only City goal when equalising in the 23rd minute.

Hannah forced a save from Vale keeper Sam Johnson and, from the resulting corner, McHugh rose unchallenged to head home Baker’s near-post delivery.

City reserves: S Morrison, R Hiza, F Bass, S Brown, C McHugh, K Harrison, A Boote (L Swain 57), R Ravenhill (T Bott 71), R Hannah (C Bower 79), A Baker, C Erangey. Subs (not used): J Bentley, J Lynn.
