Alan Connell equaliser stakes claim for Bradford City starting berth
7:20am Monday 10th September 2012 in Bantams
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
Alan Connell celebrates equalising at Accrington with City man of the match Andrew Davies
Alan Connell believes his City equaliser can be the first goal of many – but has promised to bide his time for a proper chance.
Connell came off the bench to earn a point at Accrington, opening his scoring account in style with a sublime lob.
He had only been on the pitch for seven minutes – and strengthened his case for a full game against Barnet next weekend.
The former Swindon top scorer has started only once in the league so far. Even though Nahki Wells was ruled out with a hip injury, he was named a substitute again on Saturday as Phil Parkinson changed City’s formation.
But Connell, who spent most of last season in an impact role under Paulo Di Canio, insists he will abide by the manager’s wishes.
“Of course I want to play more minutes but it’s up to me to be playing well to do that,” he said.
“We changed shape and went one up front and the gaffer thought James Hanson suited that best. We’ve got a good squad and everybody accepts the decisions.
“You’ve got to respond in the right way and show how much you want to play. I’ll always do my best for the club whenever called upon and hopefully the goal was a nice reminder.”
Parkinson, who also ditched goalkeeper Matt Duke for Jon McLaughlin , admitted it has been tough for the players on the sidelines.
The City chief said: “We’ve got a few. Ross Hannah is unlucky not to have been in first-team action so far because his pre-season form was good and he was terrific in the two reserve games we’ve had.
“Thommo (Garry Thompson) ideally wants to play up front, challenging Hanson for that position, and it’s good to have that competition. You’ve got to let your football do the talking as Alan did.”
Connell, who had also netted for the reserves at Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, added: “We’re a few games into the season now so it was good to get that first goal.
“Most importantly, it was a goal that meant something to the team and helped get us a point.
“It was lovely to score in front of our fans. We had great support at Rotherham last week and we disappointed them.
“So to score like that, when there were so many there, was great and hopefully I can get many more this season.
“I scored a similar one for Grimsby a couple of years ago. It dropped to me nicely and as soon as it left my foot, I knew it was in.
“I thought we kicked on well after a dodgy spell just after half-time and looked like scoring a winner. Our fitness showed and was good at the end.”

I think a point is a great return from a place we rarely get anything from. With away games against Gillingham and Rotherham out of the way (I doubt there will be many harder places to go this year) I think we need to be more positive when travelling to some of the other teams away from home.
Rotherham the division favourites we smashed 6-2 at the weekend, a week after beating us 4-0. We had similar the week before beating Wimbledon 5-1 to be on the wrong end of that 4-0 hiding.
We've beaten Fleetwood who have scored 8 goals in 2 games since. This is early season and teams are finding their feet, I think we have the making of a good squad and nothing I have seen so far has made me think otherswise.
6 points v Barnet and Morecambe and these early away games will be forgotten.

Never been a huge fan of Hanson but he does keep nicking goals i know. For me i would go with Connell and Hanna up front if indeed Wells is injured? Hanna deserves a chance he is a natural goalscorer got plenty in pre season scoring in the reserves and i know it a lower grade of football but i seem to recall he got a bucket full on loan at Halifax last season.
And another problem with playing Hanson is all we do is lump it up to him negating to some extent our footballing ability which we have got this season.
Finally and completly off subject cant for the life in me understand why Parky took Hines off described as the best player on the pitch. Please please Parky dont revert back to last seasons negative tactics we have some really good players now let them loose and we beat more teams than not.

For Hanson to work, he needs to play along side a striker. On Saturday he won more than his fair share in the air but all the balls were dropping to no one as he was on his own. You can probably count on one hand the number of teams we should be playing a caucious 4-5-1 against away from home and we've already played two of them, so I would expect a more adventurous approach away from home from now on...but I'm not holding my breath.

Connell could play upfront on his own as he is technically better than Hanson and wells come to that. Connell has a footballing braining which would allow him to hold the ball up and lay it off to someone instead of the flick on to nobody which is very much Hanson esque. Drop hanson bring him on for impact. Connell would be laying balls off to wells or hannah with more outcome i am sure

Now correct me if I'm wrong but a point away from home, which could so easily have been 3, had we taken our chances (I'm sure that's PP's fault that we didn't) is an excellent result - at a very difficult place. We haven't taken any points from there in years - so is that not improvement?
Add to that, the fact that we look like winning every home game, I'd say PP was very smart to change our approach from the first two away games in which we were more open and he flooded the midfield and we were in complete control of the game.
Well done PP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many points did we have by this time last year??? 1 I think we'll find or was it 2?

All those who analyse "after" the event continue to talk rubbish. We didn't take enough of our chances but created a lot more than the home side. If that represents tacticall failings in some people's minds then they have no mind at all. Once again, the result determines the mood instead of the performance. Personally, I thought that the performance against Wimbledon was quite average but we pretty much scored with every attempt that day. Such is football.

It wasn't the most flowing and exciting game but I'd take a point away and three at home every time theyre on offer.
To those wanting a change of CF I would say to try swap brute strength and size for skill and speed as a sole forward it won't happen. Not because I say so, because PP does, many other managers do and they do that because the little guy on his own would get hammered all over in THE 4TH DIVISION. It may work with Barcelona in La Liga it won't work for Bradford City in this glorified pub league. Albeit a pub league I love.
