Drop your guard and you’ll drop points in this league, says Bantams boss Phil Parkinson
7:00am Tuesday 4th September 2012 in Bantams
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
NOT SO SOLID CREW: Centre back Andrew Davies outjumps Rotherham’s Alex Revell on a day when the normally resilient Bantams back four were found wanting
Phil Parkinson insists City’s thrashing at Rotherham spelled out just how unforgiving League Two will be.
The squad face a video session in training this week to remind them exactly where they fell apart in Saturday’s one-sided Yorkshire derby.
Parkinson’s side face another away trip next at Accrington, who have won three of their first four games, and the City chief wants to make sure there is no repeat of the lackadaisical display from the New York Stadium.
Parkinson felt the 4-0 loss to the bookies’ favourites – coming on the back of three straight wins – underlined the size of the task if they are going to mount a much-anticipated promotion challenge.
He said: “It’s a very competitive division, more so than ever this year. We’ve got a decent side and a decent squad but what is clearly evident already is that no team is much better than anyone else.
“There is no club that stands out. If you drop down ten per cent and the other team are on their game, you will get beaten.
“It’s not like you’re Manchester City and can afford to be below that level and still have that quality to fall back on. Their star players will still produce something even when the team are not playing well.
“We’ve had three really good games leading up to this one and it was a real wake-up call. But if you aren’t right at the races in all departments, you won’t win a football game.”
Parkinson will not be too harsh on his players for one bad day, given their previous form against Fleetwood, Wimbledon and Watford in the Capital One Cup. But there were too many areas where City came up short in the Yorkshire derby – errors that will be illustrated on the TV screen.
He added: “I’ve had to watch the video and I’ll make sure they see exactly where we did things wrong. The video doesn’t lie.
“They were great strikes from Rotherham but equally we’ve got to be better than that.
“Look at the previous three games, Fleetwood in particular, and the way we went about our jobs in terms of taking responsibility on the pitch was top class. But we didn’t get anywhere near those standards.”
Parkinson’s claims about the tight nature of the division are backed up by Accrington’s last two results, a stunning 3-0 win at last season’s play-off finalists Cheltenham on Saturday having lost by the same score at home to Exeter a week earlier.
He said: “We know it’s going to be tough again because Accrington is a really difficult place to go. I’m concentrating on making sure we are properly prepared to produce a performance of discipline and character.”

My main concern and was all pre season is goalkeeper i my friends and family all slated Duke when he first arrived last season but i was 100% ready to give him a chance. But he seems to have a major problem with shots from distance maybe he needs contacts! Watched football league show a few times now and for me he should have done better with 3 of their goals.Shots from distance was his weakness last season i vividly remember watching him a few times last season rooted to the spot watching shots sail in from 30 plus yards.Jonny Mac is a good keeper and didnt do much wrong last season but is still a bit young for a keeper and raw.Fix this IMO glaring weakness and a good bit of training and we could go places.

At the other end of the park we also tend towards predictability and need some seriously varied attacking options. If the wingers are double marked and Hanson is well marshalled there aren't too many other attacking ideas.

A nervous, dodgy, keeper is the same as having a weak back four!! Doesn't matter who is in defence.
Also, Wells, vastly over - rated, Connell is the man for this league!

We had an excellent keeper but we sent him back to spurs. Bizarre really! Guess there was a good reason to send him back but at the moment I cannot think of one.
I am not so sure Duke being the GK coach as well is such a good idea, conflict of interest if you ask me.
Agreed with the main comments that it was a bad day at the office and hopefully as Paky says a wake up call for the lads, they know what is expected every time they cross the white line and although individuals will have off days throughout the season, if the majority are at the races we should be all good.
Happy tuesday campers!

The only competition any supporter genuinely believes we have a chance of winning (or going close) is the league
I would trade any number of away cup or friendly wins for 3 points in the league

Will he play two wingers?
Will he play Hansen/Wells?
Will he play Doyle?
Will the defence be changed?
These are pressing' questions in front of what could be one of City's most difficult tests of 2012/13?
it's interestng that 'PP' says " no team is a lot better than anyone else." Perhaps he feels that there's been an unreasonable, over optimistic feeling building amonngst fans and we need to get our feet back on the ground again. City fans are always awaiting the 'messianic' re: birth of the club and we are all guilty of seeing 'a starry future' just before ..we fall flat on our faces!!
I suppose we need to try to be more patient, support the team but not try to get carried away. By end of October we WILL have a much clearer more reliable appreciation of where we are!

I believe we will start with just one winger, with possibly Ravenhill returning to the side.
I believe we may start with Hanson & Thompson up front (although this would be harsh on Wells)
I feel that Doyle will play, but he will be moved across to the right, (depending on whether Ravenhill is fit to start or not).
As has already been said, this could be chalked down as just a bad day at the office, but in two leage games away from VP, we have scored 1 and conceded 7. This is a worry and something that needs addressing quickly.
However, someone above states that it is the defence that failed us. Yes, they have to take some of the responsibility, but so do our midfielders. Nobody closed down their players, thus they had a free sight of goal. Shouldn't Jones or Doyle have got closer, preventing the long-range shots or are we expecting our central defenders to be pulled out of position to close down????

If they are, then I would only assume that either:-
1)he believes he knows better, or
2)we don't have any budget left for a better keeper.

On the keeper subject i agree that we have 2 average joes to choose from. Not sure why everybody is so in love with Jansson cos all he did was save some penalties in a hoot out.....i saved a penalty on sunday so does that mean i can have a contract?

Bingley Bantam's comments about goalkeeping are valid. Aspirations about promotion are founded on a consistent defence and the key to that is an all round keeper who can maintain a high level of skill at all aspects of the keeping craft. The jury is out on whether Duke or Mac currently possess such consistency.
At the other end of the park we also tend towards predictability and need some seriously varied attacking options. If the wingers are double marked and Hanson is well marshalled there aren't too many other attacking ideas.

There are people still coming on and mentioning different names and asking the question why doesn't PP go for those players as they are now out of contract and free agents. I must have said this a dozen times, What's the point in posting your thoughts and ideas on here when PP won't read them. You should be sending letters to him or even e.mailing him with your ideas. I'm sure he would appretiate some kind of feedback from the fans, jast as long as they are civilised.

Most City fans are disappointed that Wells hasn't signed a new deal and are rightly concerned we will end up getting next to nothing for him next summer. However, to rubbish his ability on the back of that disappointment is both stupid and immature.
Wells is a great talent and wants to test himself at a higher level. Personally, I think he needs to prove himself at this level a little more yet before he can profess to being ready to move up a division or two. There is no doubt he has the potential, but that needs to show regularly for 18 months or more before he can say he has made it.

For me with that lunatic in charge there is a real danger of things getting out of hand both on and off the pitch.
