Dedicated Bradford City supporter pens song he hopes will accompany players walking onto the pitch

A blind Bantams fan’s ditty for Bradford City could be the new anthem of the terraces at Valley Parade .

Richard Thompson, 50, who lost his sight in a footballing accident 30 years ago, hopes his song Claret & Amber will become a regular fixture at the League Two club’s home games after it made its debut at City’s clash with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

The Silsden masseur approached club co-chairman Mark Lawn 18 months ago to say the side deserved an original anthem – better than its current offering, Hi Ho Silver Lining.

“I felt like a historic club which has been through highs and lows, disaster and administration – a club who’s fans have stood by them, coming in their thousands – should have an anthem,” he said.

“This is something that’s very much from the fans, for the fans and I hope it will become a ritual as the players come down the tunnel.”

Mr Thompson, who had never written a song before, composed the song – working with singer Damien Short and producer Tony Garthwaite at Jam on Top studios in Keighley to have it professionally recorded.

The lifelong Bantams’ supporter goes to each of the club’s home games with friend John Gavin, who tells him what’s happening on the pitch, and said it would be a “dream” if it became part of the club’s history.

“When I go to games I love to sing. I have a friend commentate for me because I don’t like to wear headphones – I want to soak up the atmosphere and be part of creating the atmosphere.

“I believe in the power of supporters, I believe a song sung by a number of people can be really powerful and spur on the players.

“It’s been a long journey and I’m really proud of the song.”

Club boss Mr Lawn said he is backing the tune and would let fans decide if it becomes the official music players walk out of the tunnel to.

“I think it’s like anything else and will take a while to catch on, so far we’ve only played it at one game – but it’s catchy!

“We’ll let the fans have their say after playing it at a few games and if they don’t like it, we could go back to a pop tune.”

Is that what it was? Sorry, but it was horrendous. Virtually every comment on the city message boards sites are pretty scathing as well...

If we have to have an entrance theme, we should have the A-Team music again.

Well sorry for having an opinion.

And besides, Mark Lawn himself says in the article they will see if the fans like it or not before deciding to keep it so theyre welcoming criticism as well as praise.

The first comments are simply what is being said around the message boards and at the ground last Tuesday before any background of where the song had come from was known.

A-Team, are you serious? It was corny, out of date and horrible. When we had it, many City fans moaned about it. Do we really need a theme tune from a cheesy 80s series to set the mood? You may aswell have a decent theme tune like Airwolf or Thundercity sorry, Thundercats.

Town had don't know if they still do "Altogether now" by The Farm, now that is a great song. Hi Ho Silver lining, to be honest I think it has had it's day to be truthful and is old fashioned, even by 1960s standards.

Hot in the City - Billy Idol
We built this City - Starship

are 2 songs that City could come out to. They may be old songs, they are more universal.

I still don't think you can beat Queen though at sporting events, We will rock you, A kind of magic, Don't stop me now, Headlong, Hitman.

This is one part of the "experience" I really feel City has fallen short over the years, in all honesty, embarassing. We invite people from across the country and we played the A-Team theme tune. What we have now is not really any better.

Bulls match day experience has been some of the best I have experienced with the entertainment. Town have/had a great song with the Farm and they even tried to convey a message across also about equality which they have to be applauded for.

Why is this something City has never been able to do right? But thank God we no longer have to listen to a cheesy 80s cheesy theme tune, that smacks you like a council estate juvenile.

I agree with you, you have to admire the guy for doing it, but it doesn't make something good, and if someone has a disability, it doesn't mean we have to automatically like something and not allowed to criticise things.

I do see comments and feelings backing the guy when reading these comments, but not one saying what he has done is good. That's what people on here are commenting on. Not because he has done it, but because people genuinely don't like it. If Joe Dolce put his life savings into his biggest hit to try and get it back into the charts for the sole purpose to cheer people up and he started off by promoting it at VP, would you say the same about him as this guy?

I understand what you are saying, but it doesn't mean that it is a good thing for the club, in effect it can be the opposite and discourage fans getting to the ground early and join in singing and gettting in the mood. Just like if City played Spice girls before every single match and at half time, I can tell you I would avoid VP like the plague so I don't have to listen to them, I really would.

Apologies for being critical but it truly is awful. I wouldn't want the boys brigade running out to it even if it is more suited to that.

Altogether now was penned by lifelong Everton fan Peter Hooton and has been adopted by them (as well as z cars)

It has to be Into the Valley by The Skids for me, pumping bass, ripping guitars and is truly atmospheric.

Maybe there is too much 'going on' in the trialled music but it sounds like a band warming up in places. Any fans effort should be appreciated and thanked for it but I too will be entering the stadium at 3.01 if this is in situ all season.

Got to agree with Luv. every year the Town hall clock chimes out You'll never walk alone on the 11th of May in memory of those who gave their lives watching City. The friends of BCFC are signing up members for £5 and you get a Claret and Amber scarfe. "Let's see a sea of C & A all round the ground" they say. Celtic adopted it and After the fire, we adopted it. So I think You'll never walk alone would be the best choice just before the team walks out followed by of course Hi Ho super City. Can we please also have Tom Hark back when a goal is scored. I would like to point out the choice of other music played on Tuesday was very good, not heard Reef for a while. Maybe the DJ and not a director should be in charge of the matchday music choice. Not every decision is best made by the man(men) at the top, this is why they delegate duties. This should be delegated, we may get Gilbert O'Sullivan or Donny Osmond next. ;)

Any choice of music is obviously very subjective, but the music at VP needs freshening up....so here goes...just before the
players appear in tunnel....the first 1.30 from Beethoven's 5th symphony
(der der der daaaah etc) ....as they come onto the pitch...Skids "Into the Valley"(not particularly new, but suits us) ... and every time we hit the net(hopefully many times) the first 55 seconds or so from "Kids" by MGMT.

Richard Thompson has to be applauded for making an effort. However, sadly, that is all he should be applauded for as the song is rubbish. Apparently, it was his first effort at writing a song and it shows. It has no characteristics of an 'anthem' and just sounded like a poor song choice.

In relation to what I would sing to, why not 'Walk on'? When this is sung with City scarves held aloft, it always makes me 'well-up' and makes the hairs on the back of my next stand up. It was also act as a reminder to the players not to stop fighting for our lost 56 souls.
.
Just don't let Shaun or TVoR pick the song. The players may end up walking out to Madness' anthem, "(You're an) Embarrassment"...!

Well done to Richard for realising what I'm sure was a 'dream' for him (and would be for many) ie bringing an 'idea' for a song through all the stages of recording to a finished piece of music!

What about ANOTHER Richard Thompson (he of 'Fairport Convention)' and his wife (at that time) Linda Thompson, who produced the brilliant song:
"I WANT TO SEE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS TONIGHT"?

This is good 'metaphor' for what we want at the end of a game plus it has a brass band in it in places which gives it that 'OOP North' sound!!

Yes, "Sunshine On Leith" is a powerful/moving song but..it was written by The Proclaimers precisely because they were/are Hibs supporters. (Hbernin is based in LeithIt It was also written about the time Hearts' (rivals) chairman

I think this song has to be given a chance ! I'm sure 'marching on together' was controversial in the first place but now is a song fans can sing and believe in what they are singing.

It is obviously the easiest option to slate it and be negative about something new as so many people on here have proved. With no constructive criticism just suggestions to revert back to pervious entrance songs ... Hi oh silver lining ... What does that MEAN to bradford city a club with so much history and dedicated support, it means nothing ! Richard Thompson is obviously a supporter that cares that much about boosting the players and the atmosphere in the ground as he has put the time an effort into giving this a shot ! And if given an actual chance could be great.

Just found the lyrics to the Claret and Amber song... Proud to be a Bradford man City through and through Blessed to be a Yorkshire man God's country that is true. We shout with pride We'll never hide Our support for you Our colours high for all to see our support is true Claret and Amber our blood it runs right through Claret and Amber Our hearts they are with you Claret and Amber Victory today Oh, Claret and Amber We hope demand ans pray Here today to cheer them on We'll shout with all our might We'll conquer all that comes before We'll beat them out of sight We'll shout with pride We''ll never hide our support for you Our colour high for all to see our support is true Claret and Amber our blood runs right through Claret and Amber our hearts they are with you Claret and Amber Victory today Oh, Claret and Amber We hope demand and pray. Now thats what i call...a call to support BCFC, beats that trash Marching on Together into the ground!!!!!
The lyrics aren't the problem. The words used are very good, but put together with the melody and it goes down-hill.

It certainly isn't what I would class as an anthem that City fans would sing out loud to.
Not for me it doesn't, i love it, the lyrics are fantastic, they're certainly lyrics i would be proud to sing, "we'll shout with pride we'll never hide" for me hit the nail on the head, if you take a listen to Coventy's anthem, that is basically almost impossible to sing.

This song deseves a chance, .... Hi Ho silver lining was put up with for far too long....far better to sing about our love of Claret and Amber....great effort Richard Thompson, i hope the BCFC fans are soon singing it just as passionately as Leeds fans sing MOT!!!!! ...after all we are just as passionate about OUR club.

A team??? I must have fallen asleep all last season as far as I remember it was Hi Ho Silver Lining. The lad has wrote this song to try and motivate so of the fans the mindless few haven't even heard it yet and they have an opinion. I would have said something like Cold Plays Paradise. Try this one were barmy, were barmy, were Parkinsons army.

Well, there certainly is interest in the concept of an anthem and a suitable alternative to Hi Ho Silver Lining. An anthem when sung by one man is a means of getting a feeling, a belief across. An anthem only becomes truely a great anthem when sung by the masses, with belief, passion and volume. Most of the above postings have heard the song Claret and Amber only once and are prepared to rubbish a fellow city supporter's efforts, a man who has worn his heart on his sleav, just like that. If the above posters were honest, you need to listen many times to new songs before you warm to them and it becomes one of your favourites. The facts are that City fans do not have a extensive list of songs that are sung every saturday. This is a new one use it. It's different because it has not evolved from the terraces in the conventional way but that does not maen it's appauling. The ironic thing about all the above postings is that if they could see passed their knee jerk reactions and all got together over a pint and sang it without the distractions of music, it would sound great. Just amagine if Richard Thompson had brought to valley parade I am for ever blowing bubbles, ,delilah or ,good night ,eileen, he would have been laughed out of the city. Those songs became club anthems over a period of time sounding fantasic when sung by 20000 to 30000 fans on the terraces, despite having no original association with football. Claret and Amber is a bespoke football song tailor made for Bradford City singing of the values that most people on here support. . Give the tune a chance it may grow on you. When you travel away listen to some of the sad offerings that are played by your hosts and it might make Claret and Amber sound okay in comparrison. I hope the above posters are people who do actually get behind the team winning or loosing when the club really needs them.

Anybody remember "Bradford City, "Bradford City, you know we're gonna win, and we'll never give in". "Let's hear you shout for Bradford, and give us all a hand, let's hear you shout for Bradford, the best team in the land" du du!

Now what's wrong with that? Still got it on vinyl if the club want to borrow it!

Great post, i love BCFC like everyone who is a Bradford City fan, this song does everything needed to be an BCFC anthem. Take a listen to most if not all football club anthems and IMO most do no measure up to Richard Thompson's song, yes some may be better in other fans opinions. Anyone who thinks Marching on Together is any better has cloth ears, as for the hopeless Coventry anthem, Claret and Amber beats it out of sight. Once again i'd like to thank Richard Thompson for taking the time to compose Claret and Amber and make the song a reality. You've done the club proud!!! To everyone including those that do not post but read these footy forums, be fair, give the song a chance.

How about The Birdy Song if we're backing drivel? No? Ok, what about The Floral Dance? Orville? All the above rank over this effort as musical masterpieces. It is a cacophony, incoherent, no value to a football club, childish, weak and altogether absolute rubbish that should never be near VP again.

Anyway, I've bought full in ear plugs so will listen to commentary if early enough to have the misfortune to be in the ground at the time this is playing.

Can't Redwire or Talk to Angels pen something for us.

Or do the sensible thing and play Into the Valley.

What's going on at VP. A very comfortable 1-0 against Fleetwood and a comprehensive whallopping of Wimbledon. Must be that new Anthem 'Claret & Amber'.

Heard it again today and I have to say its growing on me. Just imagine how good its going to sound when 10,000 voices joinn in! Come on City and well done again Richard Thompson.

Get behind it people or you'll find yourself on the wrong band wagon!

Providing the band wagon is out of earshot and going in the opposite direction I really don't care.

As an ex Terrorvision roadie and a son in a recording band also I feel I have been aurally assaulted.

But is it a lucky charm? Would I put up with the cack if I thought we'd win every time? Too true. Would I put up with it if the feeling I have now disappears as results worsen, no, more likely to Wang my ticket if we're doing poor and that is still being played.

I know what you mean but the Hi Ho Silver lining was first adapted as a chant by City fans in 1967 but in them days they brought out a new song every other week. I do wish we could adopt a song to get the crowd going before the kick off even if it is not the one Mr Thompson wrote which I personally like. It has a catchy tune but if you read the words it doesn't come over as that. It would be great hearing it sung by all the fans as they do with the Luuds song.

And besides, Mark Lawn himself says in the article they will see if the fans like it or not before deciding to keep it so theyre welcoming criticism as well as praise.
Personally I like it and hope they do keep it in and not listen to the few who no matter what good some fans try to bring the mindless minority hope to rubbish give it a chance and see if fans take to it. How many times have you heard a song and not taken to it yet after a few weeks you find your singing along to it or buying it. I know I have.

I'm not backing drivel, nor do i think Claret and Amber is drivel, i sang along with it yesterday as did many others. I guess if we've sang along with Hi Ho Silver lining, our new song Claret and Amber has to be better and lyrically it has more meaning to BCFC fans, unlike the catastrophic choices you made in jest of course. Poor old Jeff Beck, great guitarist but that wasn't his finest hour. Any one would think Marching on Together was completely adult, yet Leeds fans of all ages sing it with passion. I guess if some BCFC fans are looking for the club anthem to be a classic in the 'Imagine' catagory, we'd probably need John Lennon to have composed it. Like some i've talked to, i love the new BCFC anthem. Hopefully it'll catch on.

Not keen I'm afraid. I have said my piece, I am not a 'serial' complainer but I find this offensive to my ears. Yes, the birdy song etc were in jest, Into the Valley isn't.

This is the coporate era, not rattles and anthems. 'play up pompey' and club symbolic type anthems are a thing of the past. Even if it were very good and I actually liked it I probably wouldn't have much enthusiasm for it.

If we want to be progressive we have to be progressive and not continue to hanker after yesteryear.

I'll accept it up to pres on the grounds we have won two out of two, maybe the noise has driven out an evil spirit but I think it is more down to the squad assembled and some hard work by all involved.

bcfc1903 says...
9:44pm Sun 26 Aug 12

I'm sure you are right regarding BCFC and the squad PP has assembled, the song may also be a lucky charm, let's face it every team needs a little good fortune, so let's hope the squad makes it's own luck and the song also works it's magic when the team have a below par performance .

I simply can't see what singing C&A doesn't have compared with Hi Ho Silver lining, the lyrics alone in regards to C&A put it above the Jeff Beck ditty, to be honest i don't get the arguments against the city song, surely a petition should have been started in regards to HI Ho and getting shut of that dross, i never liked it but sang it in support of the team.
I'm repeating myself so it's time for me to depart this thread.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out if BCFC get promoted this season .
