Bradford City in last-ditch bid to rescue the Bulls

Bradford City joint chairman Julian Rhodes Bradford City joint chairman Julian Rhodes

Bradford City football club has tabled a shock eleventh-hour bid for struggling Bradford Bulls, the Telegraph & Argus can exclusively reveal.

The last-ditch deal, which carries no conditions, was discussed by the Rugby Football League during a “very positive” conference call with its chief executive Nigel Wood, who is in Australia, last night.

After the meeting, the governing body said the offer, which has gazumped a potential buyout by Super League Europe, was the first unconditional offer it had received and talks would continue over the next 48 hours.

When approached for comment, Bantams’ joint chairman Julian Rhodes, who has previously spoken about the clubs sharing a ground, refused to confirm it had submitted an offer.

But he revealed the club had been speaking to the RFL and administrator Brendan Guilfoyle about how it could help its struggling neighbour.

“We just wanted to see how we could help to keep the club alive, whether that’s in the Super League or in the Championship,” he said.

“We don’t want to see the club die.”

Mr Guilfoyle yesterday announced news of the fresh bid which was submitted to the RFL last Friday – two days after SLE submitted its “last chance saloon” bid on behalf of Bulls’ 13 rival top-flight sides to stave off the threat of liquidation.

After yesterday’s meeting, an RFL spokesman said it believed the offer had convinced the new buyer to come forward.

“The meeting was very positive,” he said.

“The Super League clubs put in their bid last Wednesday and this offer came forward on Friday. This offer came from nowhere, from someone who hadn’t contacted the administrator before.

“By making an offer, the Super League clubs were able to show their confidence in Bradford Bulls.

“This is the first time since this started that we have been able to consider an unconditional offer.”

The new offer, for an undisclosed sum, is the fourth bid Mr Guilfoyle has received for the financially-stricken club, which has been in administration since June 26.

Previous bids from a consortium of Bradford businessmen, known as ABC, were rejected because of the conditions attached.

Mr Guilfoyle said yesterday: “I understand the frustration of fans, players and staff that we haven’t sold the club yet. The administrators have a duty to creditors to aim to get the best deal possible so we submit all offers where funds are proved.

“This new offer is for more than SLE put forward so we felt obliged to submit to the RFL for consideration.”

A source connected to ABC yesterday confirmed it had not tabled the new bid, but said the potential takeover was “good news for Bradford Bulls”.

“It’s good that people have come forward. It’s not us, but it’s a step in the right direction,” he added.

Former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe had also fronted a bid from Bradford restaurant owner Omar Khan, although it has not been seen by the RFL.

Taken over by a club that nearly ended up in non-league football last year. Hope no Bulls fans bought long term season tickets last year !

It begs the question...if Rhodes and Lawn have enough spare cash floating around to make an offer for the Bulls...why isn't it being put to better use...like trying to buy back Valley Parade...or team strengthening?

Well...as a City fan I'm not sure what the eff to think about this. I'm all for an unconditional offer saving the Bulls - I only ever disagreed with the conditional offers....but unconditional offer from us? Dunno....

I don't particularly want our club tied to a company losing a hundred grand a month...we've only just got ourselves in the black on a consistant basis. Not only that, the Bulls fans seem all they want to do is slag off anyone who wishes to help them due to some God-complex or other.

Ground share would be well on the cards if this went through hahaha.

Funny how we can afford to save the Bulls but yet only a few seasons ago, us BCFC fans were putting money into helping to pay the rent for our ground!
I would like to know where this money Rhodes and Lawn have, has come from.
Don't get me wrong, I would like to see the Bulls saved but I would also like my football team to keep going. I just hope that if this offer does go through, BCFC doesn't get into anymore financial worries due to us not having the money to pay off debts such as the rent on VP.

Bulls fan here. My honest opinion is it is about time. Share resources, share staff, share facilities. The best way forward. One clb doctor, one physion, one groundsamn. A few people will lose their job, that is a shame. But times are hard. People are out of work all over. The clubs should 'merge' and reduce overheads. Hull FC & Hull City share, as do Wigan's. Has to be done.
.
Question is, where? Bulls to VP? Best stadium without a doubt. Location is iffy, not for where it is but Odsal is bang next to motorway. But Odsal is a dump, no doubting. Most amateur clubs have better facilities.

Incidentally where has the money come from ,CC through the back door again methinks something is not quite right with this.!
Dont get me wrong I want the Bulls saved and I dont think groundshare is necessarily a bad option, but VP is NOT ideally suitable for RL (pitch size etc) RFL not totally happy when Bulls there previously .

I dont see how the Bulls would play at Valley Parade because the RFL want rugby to be played at Odsal. Could be that city move to Odsal to reduce overheads and the redevelopment of Odsal begins!! I certainly have no problem the Bulls playing at VP because it's only a short walk from my house. Im not from Bradford and I find it very strange that so many football fans and rugby fans just **** about each other. Grow a pair and start to embrace both great teams of this City.

This has been potentially on the cards for 2/3 years and makes perfect sense whether or not Bulls fans like Manningham. Stadium used nearly all year round, shared rent, and easier sell for ground advertising/sponsors
hip etc with funds generated to buy back Valley Parade as a result. Would be good for both clubs in the long run. Hope it happens.

Lots of silly comments on here again today... sigh.

The potential to 'unite' the two clubs in theory is a very good one, and could if done properly safeguard the future of both clubs. Bradford sport has been in decline for years, and this could be the kick start needed to reverse the downturn.

Lots of speculation as to which ground we would move to, but either way, the potential to play at two grounds is a bargaining chip for both clubs, and a great basis upon which to develop any joint venture.

I look forward to seeing how this unfolds and finding out the details of the bid...

Could be a good move, as long as there are no issues with the pitch size for rugby matches - though the Bulls have managed ok before. A good stadium with good facilities and hopefully BCFC and Bulls fans giving their all to support both clubs it could be a win win situation. Why not when others manage it successfully? Just hope it is resolved soon one way or another.

The RFL own the lease at Odsal and wish for professional RL to be played there.

I think you'll find resistance from the RFL (as before) to Bulls moving away - that's one of the reasons why the RFL moved to buy the lease earlier this year.

There are other examples of football teams (or at least their owners) involved with rugby clubs and do not share grounds - e.g. Bristol City (Ashton Gate), and Bristol Rugby (Memorial Ground, home of Bristol Rovers).

I think some of us may be getting ahead of ourselves.

It's quite clear there's a hidden agenda.

City have only just got their finances sorted out and certainly cannot afford to lose £1m per year just to keep our 'neighbours' alive.

I'm pretty sure I read that ABC were gonna get some redevelopment backing from the council to do up Odsal and I very much doubt this offer has been made without assurances in advance that this would be the case.

I see two possibilities here.

Either, City are about to bluff their current tenant into reselling VP back to them on the cheap by threatening to move out or they intend on doing Odsal up with help from the council, moving in and sharing with the Bulls and saving another £350k per year in rent - saving the Bulls in the process and having a state of the art Stadium courtesy of the tax payer.

There is another possibility, the transport magnate - Parkin (I think it was) who wanted to buy BOTH City and Bulls last year maybe behind this whole thing. Once they are in the hands of Messers Lawn and Rhodes, then it would make it easier to do a deal.

Who knows, one thing for sure, this isn't a case of neighbourly charity.

That could be on the longer term sense list.

Odsal could be the etihad stadium in Yorkshire, and hosting both clubs at a price that will not break the bank,it will save City having to pay the £360k (reported figure)rent per year and bring sport to the City of Bradford in line with the more progressive Cities in the UK.

Wishful and fancifull perhaps, but that's the way I would be thinking.

A very sensible post although a city fan through and through I like to see the Bulls do well too and its about time the clubs maybe looked at about sharing.Osdal has a great history in terms of Rugby and not forgetting the likes of speedway however the place quite bluntly needs a heck of a load of redeveloping to anywhere near the standard required to suit both parties. Valley Parade has its own history of course but the main thing is its a ground that is modern and although many Bulls fans may say in a bad location it meets the standard for both clubs at this moment in time so if the bulls need to survive surely in the short term at least it makes sense to play at Valley Parade.

The best answer is always in the detail:

Two scenario's both attractive.
But in the long term, the best development is Odsal.

The room for expansion and development is there. and in a way we have a blank canvas, so to speak.

It will take time, but I am sure with the collective will of all parties, hopefully one day we will see the "sporting village" scene in Bradford.

At least someone has the vision, lets hope the silly protectionalists., we encounter, don't hold the sway they think they do.

Vision and progress is what we need, I think a big wadge of cash is also useful. Sadly that's a commodity everyone says they haven't got, even when they have. ie if you ever ask for investment the stock answer is: "The trouble, is there's no money?".

I have always said there should be one stadium and one set of overheads. Odsal is still in a better place but every time I pass VP I think it looks great. Haven’t they being improving the dressing rooms? I would not complain about this and if it brought about a “sporting Bradford” type organisation then fair enough. I personally don’t like football but that is because of the cheating bar stewards I see in the premiership. The lower league stuff is better to watch. If city played in the same stadium that I got used to going to on a regular basis I am sure I could be persuaded to go and see whether I like watching them? I am sure it would be the same for lots of fans if we shared the same home. Others might be able to answer the question about the pitch though. Is it big enough or would they need to take a few rows of seats out. The big thing in this when you ignore all of the rhetoric and arguing is would it be good for both clubs in the long run? I have always said it must be and give this story a cautious thumbs up for now as long as both clubs can make it work and keep their own identity but share all costs.

Why does Odsals position near the motorway matter to the majority of fans.

Most live in Bradford and won't even need to use the motorway.

Also Odsal needs millions of pounds to even bring it up to football league standard.

Mr Rhodes seems to be a progressive sort of fella anyway.
It will save £360k per year in rent but where are the millions and millions of pounds going to come from to bring the ground up to standard?

This story also confirmed that Sutcliffe and Khan were all mouth, they didn't even submit a bid but still got their faces in the paper day after day.

People can support who they want to, unless I am very much mistaken we don't live in a communist state or have a Taliban regime watching our every move.

I am a City and a Bulls supporter but I have also gone to Support other local clubs as one offs for example the Leeds Tykes, Hudds Town and Beeston United. Maybe that is because I love sport and like to watch different levels at various venues.

I grew up with people being fans of Bulls and Beeston United because at the time those were the strongest Local teams in their respective sports. If people choose to associate themselves like that and never attending a single game, then so what, there is more to life than moaning about those people.

Someone said it before, Valley Parade will not be sold to BCFC whilst Rhodes or Lawn are at the club.

Some fans would moan at anything but thats the truth of the matter.

Also Valley Parade is rumoured to be £5m where as this bid would only require coving of the debts £1.5m and funds to go forward which would also be raised via season ticket monies etc.

Odsal is more of a prefered choice to you as it's next to the M606.

But when it comes to no club or playing at Valley Parade comments like "totally out of the question" really questions the mentality of some.

If BCFC had to play at Halifax to survive I would still turn up week in week out as it's better than the alternative of no club, so why do some still have the mentality of no way.

Like you said you attended VP and didn't have any problems with it, maybe some people just don't realise how bad the situation at the Bulls really is and that they will line up in SL and at Odsal next season regardless.

The same fella was also calling for a boycott of Hudderfield due to not handing over gate money to Bradford, he was then made to look rather foolish when the Giants came out with a jesture over and above what they are required to do which made him look very foolish indeed.

If your fans will leave in droves by simply moving a mile or two down the road, they can't really be proper fans.

It is Rhodes/Lawn's money that has been the bloodline for City. The family almost went bankrupt keeping the club alive.

They have invested in the club, putting millions into it, so IF it is City that are making a big, it is Rhodes/Lawn's money that will buy the Bulls.

Ground sharing will cut the costs for both clubs and is a viable option. Not many like VP or Odsal, but all the ones that moan about parking at VP, I honestly don't see any argument there. It is just a case of knowing where to park and there is more on street parking within 10 mins walk of the ground than at Odsal.

It does make more business sense to share resources, and because at the moment the Bulls are losing so much money a month, it doesn't mean they will continue to do so under a new regime. The club has been poorly run, even before Hood got involved.

I would still beg to question though, IF this is true, if City do buy the Bulls, chances are they will play at Valley Parade, chances are they will take on the £1.5m debt and the club doesn't really have any assets either. Would it make more business sense to let the club fold and buy the rights to use the Bulls name and have a new Bulls club play at VP without any debt?

The other question is, what will happen to Odsal? I can not see City paying 2 sets of rent for stadiums a couple of miles apart.

This is interesting news and if it is true that it is the Rhodes family, I am sure we will all get a few more facts in a few days time. It is going to be 1 interesting winter for the Bulls this year 1 way or another.

If we aren't happy with terms of the accepted bid the new team will lose the fans.

It makes financial sense in these difficult times and is working perfectly for the likes of Wigan and Hull......I believe over time it would be mutually beneficial for the clubs ....The sticking point will be the stadium but who is to say that in the long term both clubs dont combine and build a new stadium...I love Odsal and it has lots of family and emotional connections but i am sure Wigan fans would have said the same about central Park.....would rather be in their position now !!

No more expensive VP debt? So building a brand new 20k stadium is the cheaper option is it.

The council would be murdered for funding such a thing when cuts are being made across the board and with their track record who would trust them anyhow (remember the Wembley of the North?)

before we all get carried away by which ground etc there are two onerous leases to sort out. The RFL must have some guarantee from someone to ensure their rent is paid just as Gibb has guarantors for his company's pension fund at VP.

Don't ever think Gibb will fall for a sucker punch about City leaving VP.

The cheapest option will be for the Bulls to play at VP.despite it's limitations for rugby. If that occurs what guarantee is there that the Bulls retain their licence and that would create an almighty pickle.

I do wonder though where Lawn and Rhodes have got the funding for this exercise. funding which seems not to be available to the Bantams!

As far as I'm aware, Rhodes is a guarantor on the Valley Parade lease and the lease could only be broken if the club was placed into administation.

Odsal is not up to football league standard in various ways.

These two points alone suggest that City won't be moving to Odsal any time soon.

For the Bulls they have already played at Valley Parade and although the pitch size can be questioned there is no reason why the front 5 rows of the kop couldn't be removed to extend the pitch is there? They are covered up at games anyhow and attendances don't appear to require them.

The RFL though could and probably will stop any move as terms of current lease. With BCFC offering the Bulls another place to go maybe that will weaken the stance on the RFL to try keep hold of the lease and therefore suggest a buyback clause which hasn't been availible as yet.

So now we have a bid where the Bulls will repay all creditors which the RFL have suggested would allow them to keep their SL licence and also allow for the buy back of the Odsal lease as the RFL could see the Bulls uping sticks and moving down to Valley Parade.

If this is the case, BCFC could simply then sell on the club afterward to the ABC group who were wanting these conditions.

Talk about that for adding 2+2 together to get 1495.

Not to mention of the standards of grounds within the football league. From my understanding Odsal is ok for the 3rd and 4th division, but for the top 2 tiers as far as I am aware all grounds need to be all seaters which Odsal isn't. IF City relocate to Odsal, the would need to invest heavily to convert all stands to meet the football league's requirements.

As far as I am aware.

The two clubs should have been ground sharing in a super stadium since the '80's but that would have meant sound long term vision.

IF it was to happen Odsal would mean too much work been done so it would be odds on a move to Valley parade. Would this then entitle us to sell the land at odsal???? Just a though but this money may be reinvested and make Bulls solvent again and/or allow us to buy valley parade back. Not sure of the situation so maybe miles off the mark here, but it does open up alot of questions.

Bulls fans would fear a move to valley parade.

City fans will ask where the money as come from all of a sudden since our own last financial issues. Plus wonder why we couldn't put it into player budgets and climb the leagues etc

If run financially independently from each other, which i imagine would have to be secured, then why can't it work?

Think long term guys and good luck to 'em. I want all Bradford clubs to do well.......

Agree with you there. You hear that if someone is a paying fan they SHOULD have a say what the owners do. Why should we? I have paid hundreds on Microsoft software, should that give me a right to tell Bill gates what he can spend his money on? I have spent thousands on Virgin products, does that give me a say what companies Richard Branson can buy or industries he can buy into? I have spent thousands on Ford, Skoda and Vauxhall products, does that give me a right to tell Ford, VW or General motors which manufacturers they can buy and sell?

Once you spend your money on a season ticket, that money is no longer your's believe it or not, and have no right on how to say that money is then spent. That money then becomes the property of the owner of said company.

All sets of fans should welcome this, IF it isn't viable, City will just cut ties, but look at Rhinos and Tykes, look at Hull, Wigan and more recently look at Ashley looking to invest into Rangers. Because someone owns 1 club that does not mean they can not own another or invest elsewhere, especially if there are benefits for both clubs.

There are many petty idiots on these blogs, Ken Morrison is slated because he doesn't waste millions on City. To be honest, if I was as rich as him, I really wouldn't put it into City or the Bulls, but I am thankful that there are people that are and the ones running City I do trust.

I think that the rent for Odsal is £78,000 a year which is probably what clubs would have to pay to a reasonable Super League player and the RFL are responsible for maintenance etc. I suppose as long as you pay the rent you do n't actually have to play there!

don't follow your logic here fella. A guarantor protects the lender from an administration/liqui
daton. That is why when lending to a limited liability company or entering onto a lease with such a personal guarantee is given to the landlord by an individual in the event the company cannot pay.

So if City decide to go into administration ( irrespective of points deductions etc and possibly more) then the guarantor has to pay that which he has guaranteed to be paid. A similar situation arises if City decide to up sticks and move elsewhere. That rent would still have to be paid the tenant or the guarantor.

So the various lease have to be sorted out one way or another. One way is to buy the lease out but the directors of city have previously stated that they cannot afford that option!!

Severe financial problems exist on the grounds before a decision is made as to which venue is used.

They make me laugh voice of reason people like that. If they are that dead set against it they should sell their homes and buy the club themselves and then pay the rent for Odsal, they should do something proactive instead of moaning. Best example is Wimbledon, I will never go to Stadium Mk because they raped, pillaged a club and moved it elsewhere. Instead of moaning on all boards about it, I just choose to never support such business dealings.

Man U supporters creating their own club in retaliation to the current Man U board.

Supporters would sooner cut their noses off to spite their faces, some would sooner see 2nd, 3rd, 4th tier rugby at Odsal than 1 tier rugby at VP. Strange, but some people are very petty in what their priorities are in life.

I'd be unimpressed if we had to play at Odsal but as we have had that forced on us, and received with thanks for the use, once over I would still go watch there if it meant continuation of my club, better than nomadic or non-existent every time.

What amuses me whenever these arguments crop up is that the proximity to the motorway is always mentioned. Now I would have thought a small percentage of home fans from both clubs would have travelled to either ground via the motorway and away fans would not care one little bit about travelling a further two miles, if they arrive by car, from the top of the 606 to Manningham as they have already come much further anyway.

Also, the two train stations are bang in the middle of town and closer to VP than Odsal, as is the main bus station. It has always seemed a red herring argument to my mind.

Another sensible post there. The best answer is always in the detail: Two scenario's both attractive. But in the long term, the best development is Odsal. The room for expansion and development is there. and in a way we have a blank canvas, so to speak. It will take time, but I am sure with the collective will of all parties, hopefully one day we will see the "sporting village" scene in Bradford. Like say short term VP has got to be the answer long term I can see a new ground being built away from existing stadium like Hull Wigan and Huddersfield have done.
Odsal has a clause I belive that no building work can be done till 2019. So, Bulls move to VP next season. They split the rent to Gibb. Then 2019, they build a new, 20 000 setaer stadium at Odsal. No more expensive VP debt. Fully designed to be able to extend. Designed around professional Football & Rugby. It gives Rhodes and whoever six years to draft a plan and seek investement. . A purpose bult stadium, with a hotel too. Maybe a new gym, even a training pitch. Less overheads going forward. The council will back the idea. . Just my thoughts, don't bother shooting me down. I could be way off.
No more expensive VP debt? So building a brand new 20k stadium is the cheaper option is it.

The council would be murdered for funding such a thing when cuts are being made across the board and with their track record who would trust them anyhow (remember the Wembley of the North?)

Where is the money coming from for your bright idea?

Gibb own's Valley Parade and the RFL own the Odsal lease so both clubs would get nothing if these places were sold for development.

With that in mind, who's funds are used to buy this land next to M&S and who foots the bill for a new stadium?

In the long term, yes.
Whats the going rate for a 20k stadium in this day and age? £35m?

City could rent Valley Parade for 100 years for that outlay.

The more I've thought about this today, the more I've come to the conclusion that this is one of the most hair-brained ideas I've heard.

There is no way in the world this could ever work unless they plan on running them as they are now, two completely separate entities.

I'm a City fan of 30 years and twice I've seen my club almost cease to exist. The bulls or whatever they were then couldn't care less.

City now seem to have a level footing financially, mainly thanks to the funding and financing from the Rhodes family and Mark Lawn. I cannot believe they would put this at risk by taking on the bulls.

As far as rugby is concerned it's anybody but the bulls for me. Any joining with them would make it difficult to keep supporting City to the extent that I do. I'm not the only one that feels this way and I'm sure there are a lot of bulls fans that feel similar about us.

Debate on each other's grounds.

Be grateful there is a possible outcome and there are 2 great stadiums in Bradford.

Be grateful that the Bulls have been there for City and City have been there for the Bulls.

City played at Odsal after the fire and the Bulls played 2 seasons at VP not so long since due to work to be done on Odsal.

I still saw some very good rugby at VP and enjoyed being closer to the action. The pitch is large enough, the facilities are good enough.

Odsal does meet football league standard, but only up to the 3rd division. Above that the ground would have to be an all seater.

Your right. Its the heritage thing that makes fans want to remain at their ground. But heyho things move on.

I predict Odsal will be sold and Bulls will play in SL at VP from next season. There is no way on earth City will leave a top class stadia like VP for a hovel like Odsal and to be honest I doubt Odsal in it's current state with it's banks of terracing would pass Football League ground safety requirements anyway. The RFL will flog Odsal for a tidy sum and the racist Bulls fans can make a regular jaunt to VP.That is how the circus will end although if I had my way the Bulls would play Championship RL at VP but that won't happen.Odsal is outdated and it would cost 20 million minimum to make it a modern stadia. The money isn't there so VP it is.....

If this is the case, BCFC could simply then sell on the club afterward to the ABC group who were wanting these conditions.

don't follow your logic here fella.

That rent would still have to be paid the tenant or the guarantor.

going into administration does not absolve those who have given a personal guarantee. They have to meet the terms of the lease as though they were the person who had the lease. This applies whether the administration pays 2 p in the pound or nowt or if the club goes into a liquidated position. So just giving up a lease because it does not suit the current situation is not an option. These leases have to be sorted out one way or another. One way is for the lease to be bought out by whomsoever is interested in doing so but, for this to happen, there has to be a willing seller. In the case of VP that is the Flamingo Land (or whatever it is called now) pension fund. The main trustee of that fund is Gibb and he has shown no interest in selling up an asset which is returning a very good yield for the pension fund (around10% I believe).

There are some very serious hurdles to jump before ground sharing at either venue can be established

Which is one good business reason is to create a phoenix club. A phoenix Bulls/Northern club would have no such ties or any debt at all. From a business proposition, for Rhodes/Lawn, would it be financially more beneficial to buy ther Bulls and incur all of their debts and contracts or to use that money into creating a new rugby club running at VP?

For someone like Blackburn, if he saw it viable to buy the Bulls or could afford it, he would take Avenue to be based at Odsal, something that he has wanted in the past. If the Bulls then cease to trade, he could close that part off and then still owning the contract have Odsal solely for Avenue, which at their current level would not be a viable option, but if they got into the conference or higher could be.

What actually is the contract terms regards the lease of Odsal to the Bulls? Is there a minimum length, has that been agreed or is it pay as you go which if that is the case, there is nothing tieing the Bulls to Odsal at all.

Also regards leasing, if it is an entirely altogether new company using that have bought the name rights to use the name of a club and nothing more, wouldn't that be a much better outcome for any company. For example, if the Bulls went bust, ceased trading, how much would it cost to use either the name of the team Bradford Northern or Bradford Bulls and have them based at facilities you already own? Therefore not taking on any debt or contracts that you may otherwise be stuck in.

The RFL may have a white elephant on their hands with Odsal, if there is no rugby team, what would become of the ground? Sold to land developers?

Just one other thought regards the Lease. I am sure if the lease is affordable, any new owner can pay it, but it does not mean that the club has to play there, so for arguments sake let's say City buy the Bulls, paying a lease of £100k a year for Odsal, there is nothing to stop the Bulls playing at City and then City doing as they wish with Odsal. The ground could be used as a training ground for both clubs, it could be used for the reserves and the youth set up. There have been issues with looking for training facilities for our club, and Odsal could be a "cheap" solution for what it can offer. Not to mention City could still lease out Odsal for major cup ties or other events.

Odsal a training ground, a reserves ground and a youth ground. That is IF there is a lease that can not be broken. Might sound far fetched, but that would cut down on staffing, it would cut down on running costs operating 2 stadia for match days and could increase sponsorship values at VP.

Just a thought that noone on here has thought of. Does anybody really know if any new owners would be stuck in paying a lease for Odsal?

ABC won`t put in the same offer as city because they want Odsal (for some reasons they won`t say) and a Guarantee of SL status. City don`t stipulate those conditions. So if City get the Bulls surely they are not bothered about Odsal, probably move them to VP which is not in ABC`s plans!!! A deadline is a deadline unless you are the administrator of the Bradford Dulls !

You always get people who don`t engage brain before posting unfortunately, and some who engage brain to post inflammatory comments for no other reason than to attempt to upset people and wind them up.

RFL set the deadline not the administrator, and it is a deadline for new offers to be presented to the RFL so you would guess they are going to accept either one of the two unconditional offers because they don't want the club wound up before the end of the season due to complications that would lead to with empty fixtures going forward and points gained from earlier fixtures.

Well said.
I too wish the best for all three of Brafords clubs.
But please dont think Avenue are in any position to bid.

Or Mark And Julian on their own.

Someone posted some thread that the VP dressing rooms have been altered to accomadate rugby.

The ABC have withdrawn.

Nobby stated Bradford City also need a future or words to that effect.

Methinks the changing of the goalposts is merely a change required as things were not progresssing due to the stringent conditions the RFL maybe set.

And quite right too.

i believe the funding will be coming from the same parties.
It is just the lead that is changed.

Yes there are extremely complicated legal issues with THe RFL ,Flamingo Land Pension Fund,BCFC directors guarantees,Bradford Council conditions of giving away the lease 10 years ago (and a package of 5 million to the Bulls frittered)to overcome in all this.
Plus 1.5 million of debt that the RFL want paying.
It is going to take a lot of skill and negotiation to overcome all this and do what willl ultimately be best for the long term survival of all Brafords cherished sport institutions.

But it appears there is a serious WILL.

And those that have that WILL will take no notice of the small minded individuals on here that cannot see the bigger picture of the long term common good.

Odsal would be best developed.
The RFL could still play a big part

They have 25 million Reality reckons.

they are a big brand.

Nigel Wood is a Bradford lad.

I hope it all works for the best.

why do they play finals at Old Trafford when there is the potential here to join p and create a truly magnificent sporting centre with other parties.

Not a Wembley of the North as noone has the 800 million that cost to rebuild.

But if clubs like Leicester Tigers can develop a ground fit for purpose then The 3 (and Avenue along aswell )could make something truly epic with the odsal site.

Noone has the money or access to funding on their own.

But a partnership to create a Stadium Village up there could if the falling out could be negotiated.

I can't believe you are dumb enough to ask that !
First of all it's a great stadium with a massive capacity and secondly whilst in an industrial estate it's not far from a good night out.
Now if Bradford was lucky enough to have a stadium to rival old Trafford you would have to travel to Leeds for a good night out.

I fully understand why they play it there now.

But the potential is in the Odsal site to have their own top class stadium.

The Glaziers will I am sure take one hell of a cut.

Whats a good night out got to do with it.

Odsal is in prime location for access at a midpoint between liverpool and hull.

How many attend these Grand Finals the capacity been 67000 at Old Trafford.?

So running professional sport is prioratising where a good night out is found.Well no its not April 1 its one step from the asylum.

It's magic!

Bradford City are suddenly transformed from being an impoverished club that could scarcely pay the rent to a cash-rich enterprise that is looking to divesify through acquisition. Wonderful!!!!

And wonderful for Bradford Bulls, too. Now EVERYONE wants to buy the club. Mr Guillefoyle is spoilt for choice.

Of course, the obvious answer is fo all these bidders to join together in one Super Consortium. If they pool their resources, surely they can pay the club's debts, pay the wages, buy the lease back, rebuild Odsal and strengthen the team. This makes so much sense because all these bidders have the welfare of the club at heart, and none of them are in it for personal gain.

I look forward to reading about the unconditional consolidated bid from the ABCSLEOmarBCFC consortium.

Where has this rant come from???????
Look at some of the earlier posts on here from City fans moaning that we have the cash to buy the Bulls but not enough cash to splash it out at VP.

Mr Gibb offered to sell the ground but the price was said to be too high an asking price -I believe it was around £3.5 million. So, Gibb is prepared to sell.

Does anybody really know if any new owners would be stuck in paying a lease for Odsal?
nothing stopping Bulls playing their games at VP EXCEPT the clause in the odsal settlement that ties us into playing 90% of our home games at odsal until 2019. Failure to do so means paying council a big chunk of settement back, currently about 1.9million iirc, which any buyer would have become liable for.

Like say short term VP has got to be the answer long term I can see a new ground being built away from existing stadium like Hull Wigan and Huddersfield have done.
The council are skint so they couldn't fund a new stadium, also Bulls haven't got a pot to pi55 in. City have suprised me with this bid but have no where near the money required to get a stadium projected past the drawing board.

You might be able to see a new ground being built but please can you tell us where you see the money coming from?
Like I say, you have given the stock answer..
If there is a future in the investment, and investors can see an overall profit.
Plus council's and government can see it benefitting thier communities, which in turn attracts business form Europe and European money, plus lottery grants etc. etc.

You will be amazed my friend where it will come from.

You have to open your mind, think of the future. The past has gone and today will soon be tomorrow, work that one out.

Absolutely see what Manchester did with a large chunk of waste ground.

It seems if anyone wants the Bulls RL demand no conditions ie you can`t have the lease.
But if you don`t want the lease you still have to have the ground!!!!!

If you wish to meet me face to face I will be the one in a bulls shirt, at odsal tomorrow. Rhodes may withdraw the bid, if that's what you mean, then fine. Also, I never apologise, to anyone, of the likes of you. Don't forget I'm the one in the bulls shirt, are you sure you want to meet me. Excellent point Reality.

He may not be able to pull all the sides together on this one but I like you sincerely hope he could.

He wants Odsal retained so probably and obviously would the council and the RFL.

You are quite right earlier to oint out the economics.

VP may be able to be bought back for up to 5 million.
That is what I was told Gibb had in it before some was repurchased last summer.
Someone else reckons he would part for 3.5.

The ground is modern and would satisfy SL criteria in two years.

Odsal could cost anything up to 30 million to bring up to scratch.

But the potential of all the unused space meens other development is possible.

Of course the stands are mechanno sets these days.

Perhaps BCFC could even move the two major stands at VP to Odsal.

And sell the land at VP for another free school or extended free school.

There is no doubt that it is going to be very challenging.

To find a way to meet everyone who currently has interests satisfaction.

You previously posted that SL or RFL were sat on 25 million.

What would be the problems with the RFL moving their HQ to Odsal?

Who knows but at least there appears to be a positive future.

I sincerely hope they all can resolve the issues without the constant rancouring that goes on here.

Get more than a handfull involved and all the animals argue.

i used to be in favour of benevolent dictatorships for the very reason that I believed the best commitee was a commitee of 1.

But Tony Blair came along followed by the even more dreadfull Gordon Brown and demonstrated the complete mess unchecked such behaviour can lead to.

I could say the same about Geoffrey Richmiond,Chris Caisley and Peter Hood.

This story is fascinating all the same

Well as mentioned earlier us City fans might start to question why we haven't been bidding for players under contract at other clubs?

Whether or not this bid goes through to purchase Bulls, I really hope we get off to a flyer to keep the boo boys away. Even the most level minded fan like myself are wondering what is going on? We were told recently we couldn't afford Taiwo's compensation fee....or was it a case we didn't think it was an appropiate fee?

The other thing is Lawn is saying we shouldn't be expecting stand out signings? Fair enough comment if there is no money to play with, and I'm relatively pleased with squad assembled so far, yet to me if they about to purchase the Bulls (which lets face it will be a few millions) the question about transfer policy comes to mind. I mean can you imagine Parkinson's reaction to this news. Here's a man scrapping around with other clubs for the best freebies, yet there maybe players under contract who demand transfer fees, where a less competitive market is taking place. Lets face it not many clubs in the lower leagues pay significant transfer fees. A million or two for City to spend on players would be brilliant.

Anyway lets hope we start the season well, because Parkinson might also start questioning the club's approach for securing league 1 promotion.....after all it was only this week Lawn said we may need to cut back again if we weren't in mix in January. Foot in mouth really when in the same week we are in the process of buying a Rugby League club.....I think I am more confused than anything with the statements made....Is there a benefactor behind all this? Who knows.....more questions than answers to be honest!

Bradford city do not own a stadium and any deal to own the bulls will give them a chance of actually owning something and odsal will be far cheaper rent than valley parade and shared between 2 clubs.... perfect sense and better location with far more potential

Do you actually know the circumstances of the rental agreement at VP? Stupid comment really. We will have to pay two rents instead if Odsal cant be included in the deal....we cannot break the lease at VP unless we go into admin. That will mean hell breaking lose amongst City fans as we would be taking a 15 point deduction just to save the Bulls, and not only that would mean risking our league status. Your simple 'plan' really isn't that simple.

Can I just say that as a fan of both City and the Bulls I have never understood this silly rivalry between this city's two biggest clubs and believe that this could only be a good move for both clubs in the long run as it would allow the clubs to share resources for the future.

Does anybody really know if any new owners would be stuck in paying a lease for Odsal?
nothing stopping Bulls playing their games at VP EXCEPT the clause in the odsal settlement that ties us into playing 90% of our home games at odsal until 2019. Failure to do so means paying council a big chunk of settement back, currently about 1.9million iirc, which any buyer would have become liable for.
Absolutely on the nail about the clawback penalty.
All parties (including the council) need to be involved and probably are.

Including the council the former sports minister and all Bradfords sporting clubs.
One slight problem there.

No Bulls = No money for anybody and if the SLE do temporarily buy the club till the end of the season, are they responsible for the payments of all debts during that period?

I have been told if City do buy the Bulls, both Bulls and City will be ground sharing at VP.

If the club is not sold both the RFL and SLE will be paying all costs and wages till the end of the season so the club will fulfill all fixtures.

I still think from a business point of view the cheapest and best solution is to create a Phoenix club, that way no wrangles with leases, the council and definitely no debt approaching £2m. Whatever happens, there is not going to be a Bradford club in the Superleague for the next few couple of seasons at least.

The other concern is what will become of Odsal if it isn't hosting games in either of the events that the Bulls are playing elsewhere in their current form or as a new club or if the go bust completely. Desperation on behalf of the RFL as they could very well be stuck with an unused ground and having to pay the council tax and other costs.

So BCFC are facing a winter wage bill for 20 SL players still in contract.

Time to ask them to find other clubs now.

And the administrater should be trying to sell them to raise money for the creditors.

If taking the Phoenix approach they willnot be in the championship.

They may even be kicked out of the RFL alltogether.

and after the council gave them a 5 million package to take odsal they could well find alienation from that quarter too.

Very complicated legal issues.

And if CC has analysed this in depth as well as he did the IH fiasco it couldbe a rough ride.Especially if the RFL feel he is behind all the shennanigans

Spending money on players or buying the Bulls is almost certainly two entirely different sources of capital. The cash (if any) to buy the Bulls is not depriving the playing squad budget.

Rhodes and Lawn must beleive they can create additional value to both teams through synergies and reducing the overheads that presumably the merger would bring (shared ground, reduced back office wages, government grants, etc.)

I would imagine the cash for the bid is either backed by an additional investor (or it could even be financed via debt) who is interested in the additional value the proposal to buy the Bulls brings to both clubs (and it could well be the Rhodes family).

I'd think therefore that this new proposal is attracting new cash whereas simply increasing the spending budget on players is not an attractive option. Therefore the bid has no bearing on the playing budget at all....except if the bid is successfull and stregthens the club's financial position (like Lawn and Rhodes must beleive it will) then the playing budget will increase in future years.

Rhodes and Lawn aren't stupid and if (and it is still an if) this goes through and they've got there business plan correct then this can only benefit both clubs.

They simply offered advice and guidance as BCFC have been in the same situation before.
.
Late on Wednesday evening there was a bid put in place for the Bulls
.
The T&A got wind of this then put two and two together and got 6.
.
Very poor reporting in my eyes.

You say lots of fans feel that way, I`ve never found that, I`m not denying there aren`t any but I`m sure not that many. What have the Bulls done wrong to you personally to have so much venom?
There are a lot of reasons for my 'anybody but the bulls' attitude, far too many to put on here. The main one is their arrogant attitude over the years to other local (smaller) clubs, in their transfer dealings, in their genral helpfulness and everything else in general. That only got worse when they rose to the top in their successful spell. Remember the old adage watch who you step on on the way up because you might need them on the way down. What goes around comes around and I do't want them taking my football club with them.
Where has it been reported this arrogant attitude?, who are these local smaller clubs? Whats everything else in general. Methinks your views are tinged with green and not facts, but if thats the way you feel so be it.
I don't know whether it's been reported anywhere, it's my opinion.

It's nothing to do with jealousy or anything else like that, it's an opinion that's been formed over many years from what I've seen myself. I'm absolutely neutral when it comes to RL.

It seems to me that if Bradford City are happy to trundle along in League Two ( fourth Div. to me) then buying the Bulls, by then a Conference team, seals the deal.
The Bulls have a fantastic fan base but the business with excessive wage demands is never going to be viable.
For City, having made such a poor effort to escape from League Two over the last few years, the last thing the limited and over-stretched management need is the distraction of the Bulls.
No doubt Messrs. Lawn and Rhodes have some quaint financial scenario lurking in the back of their minds - there is no altruism involved.
Forget it, CITY, make one decent attempt this season to escape from the bottom tier o of English football.!!!!!!!!

Yes, well said, the bulls have a much bigger fan base than City. Now get back to knitting Kangaroos mittens.

What do these people want: two viable clubs or two zero. clubs

Bang on the money Laney1989 makes sence as you say (Bradford City been there done it "TWICE" bought the tea shirt) only other reason IMO toget involed would be to bidding for a third party ?.

Lawn did NOT say 'we shouldn't be expecting stand out signings' on the contrary, he said that he believed that the signings were very good and came in for a lot of the usual criticism for daring to challenge SOME supporters who didn't think the signings were that impressive.

Who said the players were good or bad? I am am correcting a statement that was attributed to Mark Lawn which was incorrect. It wasn't an argument about opinions on players it was an attempt to put the record straight and correct some of the false information that so often floods these types of debates either innocently or maliciously.

Where have I disagreed with you lonniejockstrap ?just pointing out we've been here before remember Docherty,Lee,Bouldin
g,McLaren,ETC the list is endless all players the manager at the time thought was good enough to improve Bradford City as a team and it did not happen, so it does not matter what expectations Mark Lawn,Phil Parkinson or us fans have of our new arrivals it down to the player performances not reputations, the daft thing is the lad who nearly everyone is writing off Atkinson my turn out to be the player who turns our season around, so I'll say again lonniejockstrap it's about opinions Mark Lawn has his and so fans have a different opinion.

I agree with you, but the context of my post was regarding the mistaken claim that Mark Lawn had said 'Lawn is saying we shouldn't be expecting stand out signings'. He didn't say that and I am making a correction to something that is not a fact as opposed to opinions on who 's opinion I agree with or not. It was a strange claim to have attributed to Mark Lawn so soon after he had been criticised so heavily on this website only a few days ago for saying almost the complete opposite. So I hope you will accept ME saying again that my post had nothing to do with ML's opinions or anyone else's, it was about putting the record straight and correcting a misrepresentation of what Mark Lawn was claimed to have said. With respect nowt fresh, I think your 1st response to my post was missing my point and in your latest post to me you appear to be still missing my point about chin up's claim being factually incorrect.

i really don't know what is going on here, if we can help out then that seems good.

but - why would we make a better offer than the Super League clubs - who must know the value of the rugby league club and the game more than City do?

i have only read half this thread - does anyone know the real story here??

thanks

cheers mate - i read that one afterwards and it seemed more likely

but if this is the case why has the T&A not corrected the story? It is clearly pretty important for both clubs and the city.

I think there is an hour of radio coverage on BBC Iplayer from last thursday available for the next few days reporting on the forum from last week.

According to Julian Rhodes there WAS a BID: “We said we would help if there was nobody else. If they have other genuine bids then we might leave them to it, but we will see next week.

“The RFL knows details of our bid and has asked for more information, which we will supply.”

Note he uses the words 'our bid'.

ask the owner of AWM on cannal road to take over, a man who gets things done. He could move bulls to city for a few years, fill odsal with rubbish rrom all over the north with were it it sited. Build a new ground on the site, and still make a few mill for him self. He would not let gibb mess him around. He could buy VP and cut the rent for the few years they use it, with the profit he takes from filling Odsal. Easy.

He would not let gibb mess him around? I think you will find Gordon Gibb (or his pension fund) have Bradford City FC well and truely tied into the terms of the contract that was a large part of us getting out of the second administration, the phrase that comes to mind is "Stitched Up Like A Kipper".
