Bradford City striker Nahki Wells in no rush over contract negotiations
7:00am Tuesday 31st July 2012 in Bantams
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
Nahki Wells cannot wait for the Capital One Cup clash against Notts County in 11 days
Nahki Wells insists he is totally focused on another big season with City, even though his new contract remains unsigned.
The Bermudian striker has a year to go on the deal he was given last summer.
After a bright debut campaign, City hope to tie him down with an improved long-term offer to last until 2016.
That was first mentioned at the end of last season but the club are keen not to put Wells under any pressure.
Talks are expected to pick up in due course – with Wells adamant his attention will not be distracted by any uncertainty over his future.
He said: “At the moment we haven’t agreed anything. I’m not going to go into specifics but sooner or later, something will happen.
“I’m here to the end of the season and nothing’s going to make me any less committed. I love playing for Phil (Parkinson) and Steve Parkin and I just want to do the best I can for the club.
“I’m taking it game by game. All I can do is keep playing well and scoring goals and it will fall in my favour.”
The four-year deal would strengthen City’s position regarding any future fee as well as boost Wells’ current wages. The club would still be entitled to a compensation figure should he leave next summer.
There has been no confirmed interest so far in the exciting 22-year-old, who broke into City’s side in December and finished his first full campaign in England with 12 goals.
Wells has netted in all three friendlies and is confident he can handle any added expectation.
He added: “I feel it’s different. I’m seen as an important player but I enjoy having that pressure.
"I enjoy being looked at as someone who can score goals and win games for the team. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
Alan Connell and Garry Thompson have added to the attacking mix but Wells is determined to make the starting line-up for the Capital One Cup first round in 11 days.
“When I broke in last season there were probably three or four names (up front) but now it looks like there are four or five. But my main aim is to do my work and show the gaffer I’m ready to start in the 11 against Notts County – I want to play in that and score.”

i cannot see it not working as he is simply too fast for defences in this league and too fast for linesmen as well so he will have to time his runs better or get midfielders playing the ball quicker to him.
Would have loved to see this guy play with Carbone!!

I agree with BOTH your comments. Tyker is correct in his assessment of this players' speed and constantly being caught offside.
*
NAHKI-- has got a lot to learn in the game.
*
His Agent could get it totally wrong, and the delaying tactic, could 'Back-Fire' on them both. They are playing a very dangerous waiting game.
*
Higher league clubs are also monitoring Nahki's playing abilities. They will not make any moves for him , until there is a consistancy in his playing skills -fitness-and avoidance of injuries.
*
I would strongly advise Nahki to sign this contract on offer now. Ignoring any other thoughts, or mis-placed thinking & advice- from other sources.

Personally I think he is banking on the same form as last year and a swift move up the leagues either in the mid season window or at the end of next season.

Lots of factors if i was him to consider
1.Could suffer second season syndrome
2.Could (god forbib) get a nasty injury
3.Why not sign got security of a 4 year contract and much better money.
4.Cant see signing hampering any serious offers in the future.
5.If not careful could get the dreaded cold shoulder treatment from Parky/board and where would that leave him
6.It a great show of appreciation to our club for giving him a chance with nowt to lose on his part
7.We will not get relegated no chance if taking into account all the above factors do i want to take the risk all be it small of playing non league football in a couple of years time for coppers
Theres more but you get my point not being negative Nakki but have long hard think and good look around at where you are our ground fans support etc your a lucky lad dont be swayed by some agent who is more interested in lining his own pocket

You are currently at a club where you are loved by the fans, and that is after only 1 season. Don't spoil it by going to a "bigger" club where the fans are just annoyed that they have signed a player who finished 18th in L2, and probably warm the bench.
I trust you will make the right decision, both for the club and for yourself.

If he does not score many this season then should we offer him a four year deal? No been funny but let's judge how he does this season.
Don't think there will be an loyalty if he does well and clubs come sniffing.
Cannot blame him for wanting to do better than league two though.

Think you should snap city's hands off with a four year deal. There's a lot of footballers out there without a club or a contract!

Don't hate any city player just looking at what his best options are.
At the end of this season we could offer him a better deal and he could, rightly, reject it and become a free agent with compensation due to us. Was not Tom Taiwo in this situation recently? HAS HE FOUND A NEW CLUB YET?

It's assuring and endearing to see someone believing in themselves but when they start strutting around as if they're God's gift, then it becomes a little annoying.
I've heard the boy speak a few times and you'd think Barcelona and Milan were sniffing around him.
He needs to put things into perspective a little and remember last season for what it was.
Firstly, he got kicked out of Carlisle and had no club until Mark Ellis persuaded Baldwin to take a look at him, he then didn't get a game for half a season and only got a look in because Hannah got injured in a pre match warm up.
He then came into a side and caused trouble for opposition defences but his finishing was poor. From his 12 in 20 games or whatever it was, 3 of them came in one game so that mean his other 9 came in 19 games.
It's the coaching of PP that is bringing him on.
Yes, there's potential, yes he needs to look after himself financially and yes, he no doubt wants to play at a higher level but do yourself a favour and show a bit of respect to the club that has MADE YOU (I say that lightly as he's barely achieved anything other than a good end to his first real season) and sign the contract for more money, knowing that if he does turn out to be half decent then he'll be sold to a club in a higher division should they come in for him if the money's right.

Let's see if he can keep it up for a whole season and then see where we go from there.
His history appears to be this:
Club career
After spending the 2009-10 season with the Dandy Town Hornets, a team he had first joined at the age of 12, Wells spent the 2010 season in the PDL with the Bermuda Hogges.
After moving to the UK to attend the International Academic and Soccer Academy, Wells unerwent a trial with Carlisle United in November 2010, his second with the club. Before moving to the UK, Well has sought the advice of compatriot Shaun Goater. In December 2010, it was announced that Wells would sign for Carlisle United on 1 January 2011. Wells made his debut for Carlisle on 15 January 2011, in a Football League game against Bristol Rovers.
In March 2011, Wells publicly announced his wish to play at Wembley Stadium with Carlisle in the 2011 Football League Trophy Final, to be played in April. However, Wells didn't even make the matchday squad, as Carlisle beat Brentford 1–0.
On 3 May 2011, it was announced that Wells' contract with Carlisle would not be renewed at the end of the season.
In late June 2011, Wells went on trial with Bradford City alongside four other players. He signed a one-year contract with Bradford City on 22 July 2011.

Some lambasted Compton for not signing a contract last season, yet again What if the money was poor? Syers left for a variety of factors but i bet finances was one of them.
City have hinted on numerous occasions how they offer what they think a player is worth with injuries, age etc all again factors.
Thus Nahki may want to sign but perhaps rightly wants a little more money thats on offer? can't blame him for that.
I would argue that its worth city negotiating this considering the potential of a return should nahki show and/or improve the form of last season. We can't really lose that way as we have his services plus any potential transfer fee. I enjoyed watching Nakhi more than most of the side last year. IF he is given some games i expect him to continue to progress. My one concern is that he is frozen out like some last year for not signing. Howeever the counter to this is the consequences of him n ot playing games......

Wells would have scored fewer if it weren't for Jimmy last season, this also wasn't Wells' first pro season was it? It was his first season with City.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, nippy forrads are quite a common place item in football, target men who know where the net is and have a good all round ability are not as common, as has been seen whne the last two managers have not actually managed to find one better than we have now.

The point I was making is that Hanson showed promise but could go either way. So there was a fair amount of risk involved in offering a long contract at that time. Wells showed he was the real deal and IMO less of a risk.
Hope this is a bit clearer for you old boy.

Your opinion on Wells has been formed on a few months of watching and whilst he did score some very good goals and has done this with less minutes on the pitch than JH his all round contribution is 50% less of that put in by Jimmy.
After a very good first season in pro football JH was rightly offered a decent deal, he struggled in his second year, mainly due to bulking up too much and not being able to carry that weight and size around the pitch as easily, resulting in time out with a bad back and also hamstring injury, both a direct result of bulking up.
He returned after last summers lay off looking slightly more lean and certainly more hungry and aggressive. His link up play has improved whereby he isn't just flicking on but holding or laying off mainly to the left picking out Reid but due to having Wells running in behind him now we actually have the double threat.
Going forward Wells and Hanson COULD be the next big thing for us but defensively and attacking wise JH gets my nod as our most important forward. Slightly contradictory in highlighting a forwards defensive ability but it is a plus for both us and JH personally, last one we had that worked this well was Lee Mills

So there was a fair amount of risk involved in offering a long contract at that time. Wells showed he was the real deal and IMO less of a risk. Hope this is a bit clearer for you old boy.Wells showed potential, only when more or less forced into action. Up to that point he hasn't been considered 'the real deal' at all and still isn't hence no rush to sign him up for an albatross of a deal.
Hanson, you are welcome to your opinion.
The boy Wells is still firing away though isn't he Vic? Another couple to add to his pre-season tally, all looking good for the main event.
What I will add is, Gregg Abbot bombed him out, Jacko didn't want to sign him, neither PP nor Jacko wanted to play him until PP's hand was forced so for you to be such a good talent spotter I'd be offering my services to City.
What I actually think you mean is, like the rest of us you saw a lad who had spring heels and had a bit of skill with the ball at his feet. He still isn't 'the real deal' as you keep saying, he is a rising star but the attitude you have is one we keep warning him off. He hasn't made it, he's had one half decent season admittedly in a poor side, I'll consider him the real deal when he hits the L2 season running, bangs in 15 and we flog him for 3 million at Xmas.

Whilst not really understanding why that would be I thank you. Cheers for the advice, I will be at Goals again this evening, after my jaunt to Peel Park last night and a tour of local grounds at the weekend. What a pointless comment/person/kid delete as appropriate.

To be serious, you talk of repeats but spent a weekly crusade against JH informing us of your opinion on how poor a player he is. Now that is not only incorrect but very, very boring and repetetive. An indication of the man making the comments perhaps??
I like a good debate as well as the next person but I refuse to sink to exagerations and half truths to try and win an argument - really, what are you like!

same old story, one dimensional and we lacked passion, movement, leadership. looked unfit and clueless.
although left and rightback were slow to get forward, it wasn't the defences fault. our midfield were bystanders. Flynn and Jones did not get from box to box at all and Reid was very very poor. maybe, he had a bad day but should have been subs straight away. we were obviously beening out played from the off, so wht wait until we are behind before you change things? I am sorry but Hanson is not good enough to be a professional footballer. Devitt has tallent but no pace or aggression.
lets hope Fagen gets fill very quickly.”
Too easy mate, you were like this the whole of the year.

For some reason you are unable to acknowledge that as far as target men go James Hanson is one of the best in the lower two divisions. Stubborness or idiocy, I don't know but I can't see you changing your viewpoint but I can see you continuosly naking a mug of yersen.
We'll leave it at this because for me to continue to pick your posts out would give you a feeling of self importance you really aren't welcome to. It is also like shooting fish in a barrel as every time his name is brought up you try bring the lad down so every other post more or less would be a negative about Hanson.

So, let me get this right, you take any and every opportunity to pull at James Hanson, even flying in the face of people with knowledge of the game, within the game, rarely are your posts meritorious enough for you to do this but you carry on apace telling all and sundry how poor he is, I call you out on this and I am the bully?? Really?
I will leave you with my thoughts, in Gaelic:

And so he should. No one would hamstring themselves when there's an opportunity to do better for themselves and their family.
Hopefully we will do the biz and he will stay.
